This is a first world culture problem. We are so privileged in our freedom of speech that we think we can pretty much say anything and expect to be pardoned.

If I was back home and I tell another Filipino I want to piss on their lola's grave while they were grieving (surely not going to happen), I will have someone carrying an itak sword in front of my door ready to cut a part of my body. Words are considered weapon in my culture. We have a phrase translated to 'words are as sharp as a sword, they can also cut as deep'. Something along those line.

Just because we live in a modernized world, far from the golden olden days, our values gotta change too. Although, I am not surprised. Anyway, this is the most I can related this thread to the real world. If you think it's okay to devalue or be devalued, even online, I think you need a lot of TLC and disciplining.

Because, like most of us, her parents didn't know everyone that she knew online and in the real world? Put up a public page and watch all the heartening comments from people who've known your daughter throughout her life.... seems better than holding a "real world" funeral where you only get to invite half the people who were important to her.

I have friends online (for example from here) that I rarely see in the flesh... they wouldn't make it onto a funeral invitation from my parents... but they might want to leave a message if I pegged it tomorrow (and I imagine my parents would like to see them).

But the fb memorial pages are bollocks, what's the honest difference between someone taking the piss out of a dead person for attention and someone pretending to have actually been their friend or given a shit about them for attention? When a girl near me committed suicide and it got on the news her fb page had thousands of likes and comments like 'i didn't know you but you seem like a nice girl from you pictures and i hope you r.i.p'. If that girls death wasn't on the news she wouldn't have gave a shit, she only did because her friends did and at the time all of the local teenage girls did, despite the fact other teenagers her age committed suicide for far far more devastating reasons than the reason she did and yet they didn't get memorial pages set up by people they didn't know.

Here's an idea to everyone getting so angry, make the page private. Or, if it has to be public for whatever reason, ignore the trolls. They're trolls for fuck sake, just grow up a bit.

You can't understand why a grieving parent would like to hear that their child was liked or be told that other people are feeling the same loss? That's quite the lack of empathy!

It's not about bringing the child back it's about raising a smile from a mother crying over her dead baby... burying your child is just about the most emotionally traumatic thing a person can go through (aside from being tortured and raped, I guess).

Humans are sentimental creatures, especially when their kid's just died... and, get this, other people don't feel the same way you do about everything - sometimes you've just got to stand back and say "Nope, don't get it, but it doesn't affect me in the slightest, carry on..." which is a response you don't deserve to be arrested for... unlike deciding that the best course of action is to try and make a sobbing mother cry even more.

I'm struggling not to use the word heartless in this thread. A lot of people seemingly wouldn't care if their own mother was targetted in similar circumstances...
