@Quassi
the track drops pretty well. but if your not happy (which is good) beef it up.
constuctive critisism. work on those higher registered synths, they sound a lil hokey still, but i see where your goin with it and i like it bro.

@specimen.. i have no fucking clue what alpaca-ing someone means, any one wanna help me out? haha..
but as for the tune, i really dig the swingy feeling at the end bit there.. and im digin the haunting calmer parts, good for mixing, but mainly like the swing of the end.. really big sound bro

Wow thanks so much for the kudos guys. I've been banging my head against a wall for years now to produce something I like, and I have to say this is the first one I'm honestly happy with. The samples are from Billie Holiday's Strange Fruit. It's a terrible but really amazing song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8uaphNOjNY
I'm still taking in all this feedback and I'll try to make it better. This definitely boosted my confidence to keep working at it!

Cheers,

Deviance

:corndance: :corndance: :corndance:
never watched that.. its just 2 instances of massive and 1 of fm8, on one massive and one fm8 ive got a formant filter from eq's (i watched a vid on how to make the filter yes) then i read that thing skril said in an interview about automating an eq for his growls so i thought I'd try it out and came up with that sound. BTW all my songs are made in either g major or e major (because i'm taking theorey next semester and those are all I can fluently work with so far) Those notes just sounded good to me. I thought i was doing something original, by using automating the eq for something other than monster growls. never really noticed it somewhere else.

And thanks for the encouragement everyone else :D

First time!!!
@crakasteven
Sick tune, i think the sub is moving a bit to much on the faster notes at least in the sections with just the subs, maybe turn the depth of the lfo a tiny bit down, but not much. the mids are sick.

@alexeyhermann
The mids all sound great on that new version but the drums are lost a bit. To me it sounds like too much limiting or compression burying the drums under everything. As far as structure you should try taking the subs out of the buildup part, it will add more drama when it fully drops in.

@Dataloss
You have the basis for some good mids its just that theyre being distorted too much. Splitting the mids into different frequencies will make it a lot easier to get a more definite bite/fizz/growl whatever you want to call it. Drums need to be louder for sure, eqing them so they don't mess with the subs or the mids will make them a lot easier to hear. As far as the intro, i'm pretty sure that's well offkey, the synth you bring in behind everything. Look up some basic music theory stuff and it will be a lot easier to write good melodies/harmonies. hope that helps!

aaaaaaand here is my track! still a very early wip just wondering if the vibe after the drop is enough. feeling like there is either not enough going on or maybe there is too much percussion atm. thoughts?

@sleightmind: sweet trumpet sample. Pretty nice bass when it comes in too. Overall I like it. Definitely sidechain the bass drum to bass track though.

@acidrat: not bad, I like the breaks every now and then. The synth is really repetitive though, and kind of generic.

@specimen-yarp: awesome. nailed the intro for sure, original synth sounds. Maybe switch up the beat though, I think you use almost the same one throughout. Seriously cool synths and melody though.

@deconstruct: I actually like the percussion, but maybe introduce a heavier section where you simplify the drums for a bit. Not really sure about the vocal sample in there, sounds kind of generic. I'd say just beef up your bass and add a melody and see what happens. Got potential.

Here's my WIP. Kind of a remix of Franz Liszt's piano solo, Totentanz, but with some original synths and drums. All criticism is welcome! :)

Sweet sax in the beginning. I think you should keep it going a little longer, put some drums behind it. Maybe cut up the notes and switch up the rythm on it. I like the drums, I think they're sitting in a good place in the mix, but I'm just not a fan of the snare, personally. I'm far from an expert on making drums sound good, but I think you should find a sharper, thinner sound for the snare. Maybe someone else here can give you more experienced advice on it. Anyway, keep up the good work man.
