Nicotine. (Classical piano style)

Post by Sonic Arts » Sat Sep 17, 2011 7:44 am

Sup fellas. Just trying out some more classical samples. This one is from Franz Liszt's Totentanz (It's a very angry piece). The synths (there's two) were all made in Massive. Still getting used to not just using the presets on massive, but I feel like these came out pretty well. Massive is a pretty powerful piece of software. Let me know what you think of them! Also, let me know if there any composition quirks or EQ fuck-ups! Other than a compressor on the drums, I didn't really do any mastering (it's not my strong suite). Hope you still enjoy it somewhat!

Nicotene- Very cool song overall, nice sample too. Musically speaking, it doesn't have the best structure though. After the first chorus comes, there's a sort of transision where the piano cuts out. It needs to come back more dramaticaly. Subtle, filtered white noise, reverse drums, and auto filter cuts can help. Also, if you're going to do a chorus it needs to contrast more. I notice the drum changes, maybe switch up the piano melody and modulate the bass more? and that cool blippy part at the end might sound cooler in the break down.

Harpsichord remix: Cool concept! Similar advice though, make transitions more noticable. Obviously this doesn't follow the basic verse-breakdown-chorus structre so you'll have to make the pattern changes very noticable to make each individaul part stick out.

To make the mix in both songs sound cleaner use EQ if you're not already and make sure you're cutting off the right frequencies. Cut out the middle of your kick to save room for other instruments. Never 'boost' stuff on eq, keep it at or below 0 db. Avoid any preset eq like for snare or a certain instrument. Each sample is unique and needs to be eq'd individually. Not sure how much of this you already know just FYI.

thanks for the feedback man. I don't know why the harpsichord remix was in my sig, it was supposed to be another song. Thanks for reviewing both though! Yeah i spent so much time transposing each note of the sample up a third, I need a bigger transition for it. I think I'll probably do a double time drum beat there, I don't like how the drums are slow the whole song.
