Am I completely nuts?

Post by Manic Harmonic » Wed Sep 21, 2011 9:31 am

A lecture in my Media Sound and Visual class today about light and sound waves summed up in about 10 minutes all the strange yet meaningful realizations, conversations, and epiphanic moments in my life the past year. There was a diagram of a moving sine wave, with a picture above it of "what sound would look like if we could see it." it looked exactly like what I see everyday, colored speckles that change color with mood, emotion, and sound. Supposedly this is called synesthesia but I don't think it's quite that extreme.

I had a conversation with my friend last year where she brought this up, and I had no idea previously that this didn't happen to everyone.

A few weeks ago, my therapist had me draw out my theories about everything on earth, and in life, being composed of sine wave partials and frequency modulated waves - sound, light, molecules/atoms, tase, emotion, thoughts, touch, temperature, my mood swings which operate as a sine wave that increases in frequency depending on what's going on in my life, etc... how they are all inter-related (seems pretty obvious, but most people don't actually think about it), it was supposed to help me understand something before my hypnosis.

I posted a question on here a while back about feeding my DAW's audio to a visualizer to picture the sound, I think this is related... A bunch of other stuff too.

For what it's worth, I've been sober for 2 years so none of this is drug related... what the fuck? Am I the only one that experiences these sort of things? Do other people experience this and just don't realize it? I am I insane? I don't go by Manic Harmonic for no reason I guess... :corntard:

other people have it but its not common, if you play a note does it bring up a colour? i remember on QI that there was a musician that when he played notes they were represented by colour in his mind.
i had a slight google but didnt find what i was lookin for but it sounds beautiful

sounds to me like you're as deep and wonderfully confused about reality as the rest of us man. We're all just entities that have been formed within this arena, trying to make sense of these concepts that have apparently been figured out by the totality of our kind that pose to explain the great infinite mystery that surrounds us. Its all just learned, and very abstract, probably nothing close to anything truly objective 'ideas'.

You experience something that you can't find much correlation in anyone elses experience, why does that mean its bad or should worry you? If it doesn't define a categorized thing, it doesn't mean its harmful. Its just part of you, that infinity inside yourself, the observer looking around at the things that surrounds it, dealing with the idea of being called 'human' and having an identity, because that's the nature of life apparently and something that we have to accept because we haven't been given any other answers.

Stop trying to figure out wether what you experience is normal or not because it will send you mad. We all have extremely psychedelic experiences sometimes, while completely sober, and go places in our minds that no one would ever understand, its normal. See it as part of the experience, enjoy it as such, it's important. :4:

haha I have synesthesia too. It wasn't until last year that I realized that not everyone sees things when they listen to music

No synesthesia but I've definitely thought about the world as frequencies and harmonics.

I had this dream where I realized that the world is governed by attraction and dissonance and consonance. Things are always being pulled towards consonance through things like sympathetic vibration and resonance. Made me realize the the universe is benevolent, not just neutral, since everything from physics to abstract social interaction are all movement based on striving towards consonance.

Looking at the world through musician's eyes has helped me make more sense of it.

I wouldn't say nuts, consider yourself lucky, read up about the string theory, as the world could definitely be made up purely from waves.

sometimes I visualize sounds but not in a very extreme way.. kind of started on a trip and ever since I can picture the way a song would move if it were visual if I want to or get really lost in a song.

ive had this thought that everything can be described as waves and that by learning how to harness the waves you can control reality. since the dawn of man music has always been about the mind controlling the waves, instruments being only the means to do it. by controlling the waves more and more intuitively, to the point of meditation during the act of making/playing music you reach a certain mindstate that gets you closer to enlightenment/full understanding of the universe.

i couldn't further think about it because my boss told me my break was over and i had to go back to selling fastfood to people

This is a known psychiatric phenomena, doesn't mean you're crazy, just that you're not alone. This is basically what happens when people take hallucinogens (namely LSD). Think of it as the signal paths in your brain which transmit information are somewhat crossed for whatever reason. Also your theory is nothing new aside from maybe some specifics. I'm a graduate student in theoretical physics and everything in nature, with or without mass, has a wave function associated with it (a sin wave always being derivative). So even matter fundamentally behaves as though it is a partical and also a wave depending on the circumstance of the observation, first discovered through the double slit experiment and defined by the Schrodinger equation in quantum mechanics (for instance light can behve as an electromagnetic wave but can also act as a particle does in the form of a photon. Basis of the Photo-electric effect discovered by Einstein). But all that work was done nearly a century ago and now string theory is attempting to unify quantum and relativity into one concise theorem. It's much more complex than this but yes, it's well known that sound (pressure) and light (electromagnetic) are waveforms, but also all matter in the universe is essentially "strings" of energy vibrating in different ways and in multiple dimensions.

Wow, that's really cool man, I'm doing some research on the string theory right now, could you give me some pointers on where to find info on the idea of averything in nature being made up of waves? Or are they the same thing?
