Grime City Turns Two
http://www.xlr8r.com/topstories/2007/05 ... ns_two.php

The US is finally catching up with the UK’s dubstep and grime precedent set by Digital Mystikz, Skream, etc. The leader of the American invasion may fall solely on the shoulders of Baltimore-based DJ Joe Nice. Credited with the “Best International DJ of the Year” by dubstep forum and responsible for the acclaimed Gourmet Beats radio show, Joe Nice is stepping into magnate turf.

In homage to the second anniversary of San Francisco’s premier (and most anticipated) dubstep and grime party, Grime City, Joe Nice is coming through to keep the sub-bass wheels turning. While a majority of cities in the United States lack nights devoted to the progressive genre, Grime City has acted as a powerful force in propelling the genre in Northern California (12”s can be found in record stores now!).

The party has already had Mr. Nice pay his respects, as well as DJ Distinction and XLR8R ‘s very own bass columnist Kid Kameleon. With more and more dubstep and grime collectives popping up in the US (see L.A.’s SMOG and N.Y.’s Trouble & Bass), the bass circuit has powerful potential to become as potent as seen in the UK and elsewhere.

Dwight: Hey, so listen, I was thinking that it might be a good idea if you and I formed an alliance. 'Cause of the downsizing? I think an alliance might be a good idea, you know. Help each other out.

Dwight: Do you want to form, an alliance, with me?

Jim: Absolutely, I do.

Dwight: Good, good. Excellent, OK. Now we need to figure out who's driving to SF from LA and who's got weed...

Just a reminder here: Joe Nice + Audio Angel + Emcee Child = dancefloor mayhem. We really can't give you much more than that for free.

MUSIC

Grime City Two-Year Anniversary

Early this century, Brit kids went apeshit for 2-step, the breaksy-bouncy, champagne-soulful dance scene that was so popular it brought the word rave back unabashedly. On this side of the pond, however, the sound of 2-step was more like one hand clapping: mine. Then 2-step upped its guttural rap quotient, morphed into grime, and birthed a vulgar slew of global stars like Dizzee Rascal, the Streets, and, kinda, Lady Sovereign. Grime's lost its newbie luster (most folks give it up these days for grime's edgy kissing cousin, dubstep), but the kids at the monthly Grime City joint kip dey woozy braps flingin', solid. Grime City celebrates two years of estate-life beats by hosting Philly phenom DJ Joe Nice, "the US Ambassador of Dubstep." Skanker, oi the boo. (Marke B.)
