OnLive

Post by j_one » Fri Sep 23, 2011 4:33 pm

Sorry if this is a repost, but anyone used OnLive yet? Only discovered it earlier today, thought it was too good to be true... the actual games are streamed from a datacenter so there are no installs/minimal loading times. I just bought Deus Ex: Human Revolution for only one golden nugget. Loads of demos too, the sickest part is they load up straight away.

Sounds like I'm selling this shit, but just genuinely impressed!

And you don't need even a remotely decent graphics card either.

Rule of thumb - if you can decode 720p video, you can play games on onlive.

How long does it take for them to email you a registration confirmation?

Just can't get behind streaming services... Of any kind. :? Music. Movies. Games... Outside internet radio which is there's nothing to loose, or xbox live... And even that has issues from time to time. Also don't trust wireless speaker systems. Sorry. I'm not opposed to change, I love new stuff, but when it comes to my entertainment, I either want to own it completely or at least experience it in it's highest quality--something I simply can't see in all these new streaming services right now... 5 yrs from now, maybe... I dunno /soapbox

Call me old school but I want a physical copy thats there even when I'm offline be it films music or games, paying strictly for data against an online account name just doesn't work for me, it's also open to abuse from those running the services as far as price points go (see itunes with film download prices). I know it's gonna be the way of the future but I'll try and preserve the old way for as long as possible.

Tried it at my brothers, it's not shit but not great either. It feels ever so slightly out of synch. It has potential but it's not as responsive as it being on your HDD.

Bought Human Revoloution from it yesterday and played for a few hours. I'm on a fibre optic connection averaging about 15-20mbs down. There was a noticable 100-200ms delay, altough I was on wifi, I'll see if it's better wired later. It doesn't ruin the game, but I did only pay a pound for it, If I had to pay the full price I would have just bought it on 360.
It does allow me to play high end games without a decent pc, but there aren't many pc exclusives on the service yet. I'd pay for stuff like civs 5 etc. I'll prob buy a decent pc after christmas as well making that advantage pretty redundant.
The renting thing seems like an ok idea, doesn't really stand up against services offering physical rentals though, since with most of them you keep the game until you want to change it for a new one, and they probably work out cheaper.

I'd certainly give it a try though. If anything it's worth it for getting Human Revolution for a quid. Nothing to lose really (except £1)

After trying the dirt 3 demo yesterday and having a look at things, i have to say im quite impressed. Only a very small amount of input lag. The deals they have are really good, first game for £1, £6.99 a month for full access to 105 games, pre-order batman arkham city and you get the console for free which is worth £70. Wouldn't pay full price for a new game though, would rather have it on steam.
