Internal midi controllers inside ableton?

Post by sargentpilcher » Sun Sep 25, 2011 11:47 pm

FL Studio has a feature I LOVE that allows you to input audio into it, and it can then convert that to midi/controller data. It's called "Fruity peak controller". This is often used for sidechaining by sending the kick to the peak controller, and attaching the threshold of a compressor to the controller data from the peak controller. One thing I love doing with this is taking an EQ, finding out what frequency the kick is taking up, and sidechaining the single band out of the bass to still remove bass bandwidth from the bass when the kick hits, but to retain the top end.

Is there anything inside ableton live that can do this, or something similar? One thing I really love about FL Studio is that you can literally sidechain ANYTHING using this technique.

It's pretty confusing to understand what you're trying to do..?

Lol, sorry. I'm trying to see if there are internal midi controllers inside of ableton live. For example, FL studio has an internal LFO that you can map to any perameter you'd like to modulate. It also has a feature where you can convert audio data, into midi data with which to modulate any other perameter you would like as well.

I would just like to know if there is a way to do the same inside of ableton live. I call it an internal midi controller, but I'm not sure what an official title would be for it. But I find it to be incredibly useful. I am making a transition from using FL Studio, to ableton, or at least I want to use both, and any time I'm inside ableton, I miss that feature.

I've been using FL for a while, just picked up Ableton a few weeks ago, which puts me in the same boat. To the extent of my somewhat limited knowledge, and if i understand your question, there isn't, but i really have no idea. I have a counter-question, though. The internal LFO that you just described has been VERY useful to me in combination with several midi controllers i have when using FL, but when i use Ableton i can never get my midi set up exactly the way i want it, if at all. Once i finally get my controllers recognized by the software, i can midi map specific parameters in macros, VSTs, and effects, but i'm having a hard time linking even the computer keyboard midi control with a specific track. I've set the monitor on a track to "in" so that i can use midi to play melodies and such but this doesn't allow me to play over preexisting midi data. All i'm looking for is a simple way to connect my keyboard(s) with sounds i want to play in a way that circumvents tracks and runs straight from my VSTs and their respective effects chains, do you know if there's a way to do this?

I'm not 100% sure (I'll double check in the morning), but in the 2 times I've connected my midi keyboard to ableton, I believe I took the same approach in did in FL, in that I simply selected that track, and the midi data was automatically sent there to be played.

So... i actually resolved this issue since yesterday, and it turns out all i had to do was arm the record option on the track. I'm sorry to say i still don't have an answer to your question though.

to answer the question, there isn't exactly a peak controller in ableton like in FL... it IS a little disappointing actually. it'd be nice to be able to LFO any parameter within live, and 'sidechain' any parameter. that was one thing i liked a lot about FL back in the day.
maybe for version 9? ableton is beautiful but there are still some things it could use.

if i'm wrong, please somebody correct me.
