Anyone using Solid State Drives on production rigs?

The prices have dropped loads and I was thinking about going for a SSD, dos anyone use them? is it worth it for a music production set up?

I dont think theres any benefit for audio drives but systme drives are loads faster with one. Great for restarting/loading ableton etc.

Its a bit weird at first, doesnt seem as fast as you expect, but then you use a normal one again and its sooooo slooooow.

i got one as my system drive too. 120gb, its pretty fast to boot up and load programs, and you never have to defrag it. also got a 2tb standard hdd installed for my storage. think thats the way to go at the mo, as ssd's are too expensive for large sizes.

Im the opposite to this, I have a 120gb solid specifically to preserve the safety of my wav's, and store everything else on my traditional hd.

This is mostly because I have an aweful habit of putting my still running laptop in my backpack, where it gets jostled around nonstop, so moving drives have a tendency to get damaged.

i want one of those military grade laptops you can chuck off of skyscrapers and whatnot, but they always have such shit specs.

I have one too. 120 GB 550MB/s r/w speed. My computer boots faster and every program installed loads faster. Defragmentation is also redundant with SSD's. Samplers load my presets faster and seem to work somehow faster overall. With my software synths I really don't see a big, if any, difference, except some romplers such as Cakewalk Rapture with the biggest "waveforms" (about 250 MB). My main DAW is Reaper and I occasionally use Sony Acid Pro 7 if I need to do some quick work with loops. Both load pretty fast from a regular 7200 rpm HDD, so I really can't see any big benefits there. As a conclusion I would anyway recommend buying a SSD for system disk and a regular HDD for storage. I have 2 TB HDD and a bunch of portable USB HDD's for back up and storage purposes. If you ever gona use software samplers with big sample libraries such as IK Multimedia Studio bundle (about 90 - 100 GB with extension libraries) or EWQL Goliath (40 GB) or the likes you will regret if you choose the 60 GB SSD. Even 120 GB is something I regret, since I would like to keep more stuff installed there, but I manage. Keep in mind that Windows 7 sucks close to 20 GB of space and you really want to install your operating system in the SSD because that's where you get the biggest benefits.

my system drive is seriously on it's last legs, really wanna upgrade to an SSD system. worked out could get a 60gb SSD drive and another normal drive for around £90, unfortunately more than i have atm but it needs to happen soon or i'm going to be spending all my computer time using a linux live cd.

Somewhere deep on the ubuntu wiki is instruction for doing a write-compatible usb external hd live disk... All the things youd expect/enjoy from a livecd, with the added ability to save delete and write data to the disc, vs. live CD all you can do is work.

Kinda nice, being able to take the o.s. out with you, especially now that they have the 'universal' drivers on the live discs working better.

yeah i know you can do stuff like that, just slightly annoying my m/b doesn't support booting from a usb device. still hopefully i won't need to use that and i can just spring for the new system drive.

if u work a lot with huge sample libraries its a safe bet
