Re: Graintables
Alchemy is supposedly the best granular synth (can also do other types of synthesis)
And what is a "graintable"
And what is a "graintable"

Awesome thanks. I'll check it out

Re: Graintables
And also, this may seem like a stupid and/or obvious question, but... would granular synthesis just be the same as say, taking a sample and slicing it into small bits and cut them a little to add some spacing? What's the benefit of the granular modulation as opposed to using this method?
Re: Graintables
It's really more the processing you can do to the grains than just the fact that they've been chopped up.

Re: Graintables
You've obviously been using Malstrom lol.
Check out Grainz vst by SK Note at http://www.sknote.it/download.htm
Another good one is Granite by New Sonic Arts available at http://www.newsonicarts.com/
Some others can be found at by doing a search on KVRAudio which throw up some results like ---> http://tinyurl.com/44oyr5q
But tbh, you're probably best off grabbing a good wavetable synth like Vember Audio Surge or Jeremy Evers Atlantis which both allow user created waveforms and have silly amounts of modulation options....

Just downloaded Grainz and reading the manual. I haven't tried it yet but damn this thing looks awesome! Thanks for the link! I was also really surprised to see that it's free.

Re: Graintables
i've been using the granite demo for a while now and i really love it, but does anyone know how on earth am i supposed to use it? like, if i try to trigger it via midi it just goes crazy. the only way i can use it is if i arm the track, it generates the sound without stop, and i resample it. it's a great tool but i must be doing something wrong...futures_untold wrote:You've obviously been using Malstrom lol.

Re: Graintables
Haven't tested it yet, but from the GUI one can see there are some major differences.
Granite seems to be about modulating the play head direction and position then applying FX. This new plug seems to be about rearranging the slices using the pattern grid in the bottom right and funking up the sound with available funktions!

Re: Graintables
Thanks, the thing is I like Granite alot, but it costs alot more than a CM issue. Although I don't want to spend 16EUR for something I didn't even see/hear in action. Might hold off buying Granite for a while and see wether some vids of Cumulus show up, if not i'll just grab Granite.
Re: Graintables
Graintable... never really got in there. Its like a future project. Get those grains, put them in a table. See what comes of it.

Re: Graintables
Grab both imo, see which one you like then sell granite if it's not to your taste.
You get a free magazine with Cumulus too

Re: Graintables
Will take the chance and grab the CM after work, if I don't like cumulus i'll get Granite later on.
Anybody already tried out Cumulus?

Re: Graintables
Installed it last night, it's quite different than I was expecting.
It feels more like a glitch plugin than a granular sampler/synth, well atleast thats the impression I got from playing with it for 15 minutes.
Not really what I was looking for, nevertheless a cool free plugin. Maybe i'll find a use for it in the future.

Re: Graintables
If you've read The Computer Music Tutorial by Curtis Roads, one gets the impression that no 'true' granular synth exists because he talks about 'clouds' of granules which are rearrangeable.
Cumulus looks more like a loop slicer in a way. What's it like to use?? Mr Ex

Re: Graintables
Haven't read that yet.
Yes and using it feels that way too. It's pretty easy to use I found. Slicing is done by selecting a scene and simply clicking on the wave to place the marker.
Each scene has it's own setting which is nice. Sequencer works good too, left click for placing event and right click to delete, nice and simple.
One thing I could not get to work was triggering it with a midi device, but yeah just messed with it for just 15 minutes without checking the manual
Would be nice to trigger each scene with a key or pad or to play a scene like an instrument with the keys, but don't think the latter is possible.
Definitely will be consulting the manual next time I play with it, hopefully sometime during the weekend.
