He was also the first man to sell a home computer with a GUI and the first person to bring the mouse into the home/office, if that wasn't world changing, I don't know what was. I give him props for his business acumen in the 90s and 00s, but in the early 80s he was a genuinely visionary nerd.

Well yeah, the point of a CEO at a tech firm isn't to come up with entirely new technical innovations, it's to spot before anyone else that a particular technical innovation in the right way at the right moment could be massive. And that's not as easy as saying "oh yeah, we'll make it shiny, charge loads of money for it and spend a lot on advertising."

Mac's were given for free and sold very cheaply to schools in a time when pcs were unreliable and functional fucking disasters (cough 3.1). I don't know one person over the age of 25 that didn't have a profound experience on the mac in regards to their education.

Perhaps that's it... Macs for many years were uniquely american and maybe we have more of a tie to the brand.

Pretty sure I was very careful to not use the word invent here (and have already credited Xerox if you take the time to actually read my posts). He was a product design guy, not an inventer... not that product design isn't just as important. Computers were the preserve of committed geeks until product designers got hold of them and made them useable for everyone.

Jobs' great skill was to be able to marry up the technology of the day with a public demand that the public didn't even know it had. As with Bill Gates and Henry Ford, he had a ridiculous empathy with other people so much so that he could spot platforms before they'd happened yet - yeah, the home computer would've happened anyway, as would the digital music player (in fact, Creative got there well before Apple)... the point is nobody made them worth buying before Jobs. That's worthy of celebration... I don't see anyone in this thread saying he "invented" anything. Ive and Wozniak get far more props there.

(Also, I agree about Gates and have been a Microsoft mark for my entire life - they're who earn me my living - but I imagine that getting pancreatic cancer and dying at 56 somewhat scuppers your ability to be a great philanthropist - Gates essentially retired from Microsoft before starting all that)

I bought a stolen first gen Imac for $300 the summer of my 16th bday. By the next year I had bought my own car off of making rave flyers with Bryce 2 and Fractal Paint/Photoshop. Also made insane amounts of cash making .gifs for companies. Animating a logo back then would score you $100-$200.

Outside of those lame ass mice it came with those things were decent back in the day.

Indeed, but he did make the first one that was able to be mass produced, including the workflow for the factories and the electricity delivery to homes... Edison was an excellent scientist, but he was a much better product designer and businessman. If he hadn't realised that there was a shitload of money to be made by cabling up America and selling them electricity (and that the electric lightbulb was the way to convince everyone to jump on board), he may not have bothered.... he wasn't the inventor, just the first person to make it accessible to your Average Joe.
