Patch Bay has confused the life out of me again!
Rewiring my setup, just got a 16 channel mixed to accommodate the majority of my gear.
I want each hardware device to have its place on the mixer, BUT also hooked up to the patch bay so I can route outputs of one device to inputs on another. I'm slightly confused about setting this up though.
As it stands I have x2 8 way mono looms going from the mixer to the outputs on the back of the patchbay. But, using the MPC as an example, the output from the MPC goes to the input (top line) on the back of the patch bay, but where do I wire from the patch bay to the input on the MPC?
If you get what I mean.
It's very confusing. I have a feeling I'm missing something, or I have the topology wrong.
Any advice?

Sorry cant help but I was wondering where you picked up your patchbay and how much it set you back?

Got it from a Dj/Live shop in Birmingham. Think it was around £80.benjaminC wrote:Sorry cant help but I was wondering where you picked up your patchbay and how much it set you back?

Cable from bottom line back goes to mpc input. Top line back should have cable coming from output of whatever gear you most often sample from. Then assuming you have other gear outputs going into top line back (different columns) you can then use a patch cable in front to go from any top jack front into the bottom Jack front that has the mpc output in back. That will break the default circuit between your mpc input and your regularly sampled gear. Or just forget the top line back and use the bottom line Jacks as a simple extension of the mpc output. Make sense?
Edit: second to last sentence shoud read-

the top row should be your inputs on the devices
bottom the outputs

look at the pic of the top that shows the patching or dl the manual should explain it

Thats how I already have it, but I want each device to be connected to the mixer aswell.fhsueh wrote:Cable from bottom line back goes to mpc input. I think what I need to do is connect all the channels of the mixer on the bottom, and each device to the top to represent it's place on the mixer THEN on the spare slots, on the bottom row, plug from the patchbay to inputs so when I want to route the virus to the MPC I can plug it from the top of the virus, to the MPC input which will break the viruses regular connection, and the virus will then be heard through the MPC's thru.

yea you have to wire the gear and mixer separately and patch them together via the front of the patch bay
that way the mixer can be included in the equation or completely out of it

Re: Patch Bay has confused the life out of me again!
The way I've currently done it seems to work ok. Example:deadly habit wrote:yea you have to wire the gear and mixer separately and patch them together via the front of the patch bay
that way the mixer can be included in the equation or completely out of it
Top 1: MPC Output
Top 2: Virus Dark Star Output
Top 3: Virus TI Output
Top 4: SP404 Output
Bottom 1: Mixer Channel 1
Bottom 2: Mixer Channel 2
Bottom 3: Mixer Channel 3
Bottom 4: Mixer Channel 4
So, the outputs from the 4 devices have their place on the mixer. Now, to deal with routing inputs and outputs to each device.
Top 5: Empty
Top 6: Empty
Top 7: Empty
Top 8: Empty
Bottom 5: MPC Input
Bottom 6: Virus Dark Star Input
Bottom 7: Virus TI Input
Bottom 8: SP404 Input
So now, on the from, I use the patch cables to connect the top 2, to the bottom 5. Now, the virus no longer goes via the mixer, but straight into the MPC.
It's not the best solution, because any aux sends applied to the virus channel are not going to be applied, but I only have a 16 channel mixer and no outboard effects anyway. Any effects will be applied on the mixdown when I have the .wav samples in Logic.
But what it does allow me to do is route sounds into other devices for processing and sampling without dealing with a spagetti of wires.

yea it varies from patchbay to patchbay and how the pcbs are routed by default
def something you should refer to the manual for
i can only speak on personal experience from my neutrik one in my rack and the other ones i've wired up before
