Help identifying instruments used in common songs

Post by CanAPanda » Tue Oct 11, 2011 4:54 pm

I've been listening to dubstep for some time now and have recently gotten interested in making my own songs using FL studio. I was unfamiliar with the program when I first got it and to familiarize myself with it I've been watching youtube tutorial videos and such. So far I have learned multiple ways to make wobble bass lines, as well as some other things that are involved in the production of dubstep. Now that I've started creating songs, when I listen to a song I start picking out instruments in it that I'd love to use in my songs or a variation of it but I never can figure out what that instrument is based off of. I realize that not every dubstep artist uses FL studio but I'm sure there are a lot of similarities between it and other programs. Anyways here are a few songs with the time the instrument comes in that I'd like to know. If you have the ability to identify this instrument or even how that sound is made in FL studio that would be great!
UFK Dubstep Tutorial 0:33 (the high pitch sytrus type instrument) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJzfTZlEl40
Southside Skank 0:12 (the xylophone-sounding instrument) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdXvNem6z9I
Hold On (feat. Amber Coffman) (Sub Focus Remix) 1:06 (the deep bass, and the higher pitch instrument) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NI2b7qXUlnE
Koncrete 0:56 (the deep bass you can't miss it... I've become obsessed with re-making this in fl studio but have had absolutely no success.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKMBSk4zyS0

If you know a few commonly used instruments those would also be very helpful, as well as any other advice to someone just starting out and eager to learn, either about FL studio or dubstep production!

- Thanks -

the sound in the southside skank song can be found in any 808 pack, dont remember the name for it as im not at my computer. but i use this sound a lot. if its not exact its damn near close. just throw a ton of reverb on it and its lush.

the ukf tut video, is just some simple 3xosc sound with delay and reverb and tightly placed notes.

hold on sound is using massive for that throat type woi, the higher pitch is something you would probably just have to experiment with. not really sure tbh never tryed replicating it.

Koncrete sounds like another use of massive, or something simpler with a chain of disto fx and reverb to give it that little bit of shine.

if you wanna go into the more distance/heavier things i suggest looking up TAL- Noisemaker. free synth that i have been using a ton lately, takes a little bit to get use to but it can make some very nasty dungeonesque sounds.

I helped in a post, holy shit. Its my day off so why not.

thanks a lot oprs, I'll check these out and see what I can come up with!
on a side note, do you know any good effects that I can add to make my bass lines sound less choppy and more dense/deep?

my best guess is square + triangle + distortion. might try a saw too.

no no, the bokator "xylophone" sound is not an 808 tom.... it is simply a square wave with no sustain and short decay. starts filtered, but he gradually 'unfilters' it until it is just a square with some verb
