@wirez: Kontakt is another thing that I'd really like to get, but I promised myself that I wasn't going to buy another NI product unless it was Komplete  I'll definitely think about it though, thanks. :)

@Manic Harmonic: Yeah I'm definitely planning on still using Live. Most likely I'll start stuff off in Live, since it's really easy to get your ideas down with, then finish it off in Logic. Thanks for the help :)

I'll let you guys know tomorrow what I decide to do. If I end up getting logic I'm sure I'll have a lot more questions

been on logic for about 6 mnths and just got through this thread. some great info here. big up everybody. does anyone have any resources on file structure i guess you call it- as far as regions, bins, bounces and where to save everything-i am also a new mac user if that helps. learned so much on this thread so far- more specifically where should i save my bounces and how would i bounce the output of a bus. right now what im doing to achieve this is creating an audio track and recording with the bus as the input...and what are you guys doing with apple loops and instruments? can i save instruments and effect chains of my own to my library? any tricks or tips on how to use those functions effectively?

you could just solo whatever you wanna bounce. with the bus you can right click on it in the mixer and "create/select arrange track" that way you will have it in the arrange and you can any do automation if you want... then just solo that and bounce

if you go into your mixer you can save channel strip settings by clicking on top of the channel strip where it says settings

^okay then it saves by default to a folder called bounces and i have "copy to bin" checked so i know where to access it from- is that the easiest/ most efficient way? should i be naming that bounce something song specific or generic like "bass 1"? in other words- should i be building a library of loops/ bounces for future use? and what is the best place to save that? i was using reason w cubase previously on pc and what i would do is with any tune i would start in reason/rewired export all my 8 bar loops and basically put them in samples>dubstep loops>track name folder then name each "tracknamekick1" but logic doesnt give me the option to create a new folder in my bounce menu. if that makes sense. seems like logic/mac gives the ability to set up a nice library with apple loops- anyone got any tips/resources on utilizing that function? thanks again

Quick question, I just got logic a few days ago and the first thing I'm trying to get used to after switching for FL is drum programming. I've been doing all of my drums in audio but was wondering if there was any way to adjust the velocity of certain audio hits? At first I was just automating the volume for different hits in the loops I was making, until I realized i'd have to do that for the entire song which would be a hassle.

What you can do is hit cmd D for duplicate. Then lower the vol of this duplicate channel and move some samples to it that needs a lower velocity . Alternatively, you can use a sampler and use midi.

Oh ok that sounds like it'll work out well. I had dabbled a bit with using the esx24 for my single hits but felt that I was moving a little faster using audio, although I still cut up loops in the sampler. I might just need to do some more tinkering/reading about the esx and get used to that as well.

Yeh best way is going to be using the EXS24 because you can use the opening volume thing so that the velocity of the MIDI defines the volume of the playback of the sample.

Are people using the pan pots on each channel in the mixer or the direction mixer plug in for general mix placement?

As I understand it the pan pots only give volume to left or ride sides where as the directional mixer places the sound in that specific location in the mix.

Maybe it's just me but they sound different? I'll have another listen next time i'm on logic.

Why would they add the directional mixer if it's the same as the pan though?

On a stereo channel strip the pan knob is not a pan knob -- it's a balance control. The direction mixer is the way to go to actually pan stereo material.

ive always wanted logic to put proper pan knobs instead of that balance knob

and balance as a plugin...

wait... what? Isn't panning for stereo just adjusting the volume of the l/r channels in relation to each other? From what I understand the direction mixer has the width option or whatever it is, which adjusts the volume of the mid and side channels.

Ultrabeat is really worth getting stuck into - ultimately offers far more control over drum sounds than the esx24.

hey guys

just wanted to know how you quantise stuf for dubstep in logic? I paste audio mainly and it never lines up perfectly unless i zoom right in and line it all up, if theres a way to speed this up it would save me so much time !

Yeah that - or you could also use Hyperdraw to change the volume of each audio hit on the audio track (it's actually MIDI CC data). I usually do this with 3 hits so I have 3 different "velocities", if for some reason I use audio tracks for drums instead of EXS24.

is there a way in logics automation to set up an LFO? I know in FL under edit events there was just an option for LFO, looking for something similar to that. Trying to have an LFO'd notch running through a bassline (using tone2 bifilter if that helps), and really don't want to draw in an LFO

*mac newb alert*

ok so in an effort to get my self qucikly back into the swing of things when i recently went mac/logic i did the idiotic thing of installing a bunch of AU's and some vsts etc. so now im left with a bunch that im ready to get rid of....demo's,shitty ones ill never use, ones that crash, cracks etc. Basically im trying to go legit and wipe my cpu free of all the bunk ones un activitaed ones demos all this shit i have from just hastely trying to get my setup back up to speed. the problem im having is i have no idea how to uninstall any that have been installed, where ALL the files for plugins are kept....patches vst versions rsa versions etc.. Do i just delete shit to make it go away? will deleting the component delete patches etc?

any help on getting rid of plugins i dont want to use...completely, would be great.

Deleting the plugins from its folder wont usually delete your patches, (I save my own in their own directory along with all my synth patches and sampler banks). To find the audio units (logic doesnt use VSTs) goto yourHD-->library-->audio-->plugins-->components, and delete the unwanted audio units there.

Alternatively, if you wanted to keep the plugins, you can disable them in logic. Goto File-->audio units manager, and de-tick the ones you dont want to be used.
