Any good links to articles/tutorials on advanced bass?

Post by Anne Droid » Thu Oct 20, 2011 3:12 pm

Im running out of resources for learning more about bass layering, processing, setting up wobbles, advanced ways layering automations and what not.

Anyone have any articles or tutorials that really helped them learn new techniques or processes to get more out of your bass?

watching tutorials on making some random noise is gettin old :u: , and ive read all the stickies and articles I know of.

I just thought maybe we could share resources that really helped you understand how to layer and wobble different bases. how to set up complex automations and stuff like that for more interesting sounds and patterns.

before anyone says it: yes, practice is key, and you cant teach creativity.

Just learn about synthesis in general eg different waveforms, modulation types , filters etc then use that knowledge to achieve the sounds you want

I know how you feel. When I first started producing, I learned the majority of the basics via YouTube, DSF, etc. and after a while of doing this, you'll realize you're beginning to plateau as you quickly absorb the fundamentals. These days, in addition to my normal rounds, I also maintain an account on the Grid (dogs on acid) as well as have a paid subscription to Sound On Sound, both of which in my opinion have been critical to my growth as a producer. Without a doubt, it has a lot to do with the credibility of the sources. The problem with learning solely from youtube vids or forums is that not every poster/author/blogger/video journalist is a mix engineer or mastering engineer who actually understands the theory behind the processes. Unfortunately, many people implicitly convey a very formulaic approach to mixing and post-processing music which is largely flawed as every track is different, and certain production techniques which could improve track A could also be detrimental to track B.

I would also encourage you to find someone on these forums (or any other production community you're a member of) who is experienced with production as well as the industry that can give you pointers or advice on how to grow.

Don't be afraid. They all seem like trolls, but most really aren't.

I want to answer this but i still feel like i dont know what im doing. But i've watched as many master class videos as i could find and watched a bunch or tuts on specific sounds that i want to achieve. experimentation is key i think and as you are re-creating the sounds you like you will stumble onto something that will be original to you :4:

Yes experimentation really is the key if you've read everything etc.
If any given parameter sounds great when you move it, automate the hell out of it and you should e able to come up with interesting automations! :W:
new melodic bassy track:

IMO you can't just fuck around with synthesis without understanding the constraints behind what you're doing first. Not to mention, the art behind taking a simple tune and elevating it to something more comes from the mixing process. Producing well doesn't begin and end with spectacular synthesis, because the rest of the elements in your tunes need to sound good as well.
Theoretically, you could keep adding layers to your bass synths and modulate 50 parameters AND automate the amount/depth of all those modulations then resample, rinse, repeat; but without knowing how the bass line should be mixed with respect to everything else, such a process would only be detrimental to understanding the fundamental basics of production and would ultimately have an adverse effect on the quality of your ART.

Those brutal walls of bass heard from huge producers are created with lots of finesse and extremely clever, elegant mixing. I think many people misinterpret what people on these forums say. Yes, you can improve at synthesis by simply "twiddling knobs" in your favorite synthesizer, but that's assuming you understand the basics of mixing first.

Tom Cosm seems to have helped folks so that`s a good start.
Ascian's tut`s are broken down nicely and he follows you through an entire track virtually.
Including some interesting bass techniques.

I have checked out Ascian's tutorials and I like where they are going. Can't wait for the next one to come out.
Tom Cosm is ok I watched a lot of his stuff when I first started and he is really good if you are a beginner especially with Ableton but i'm pretty sure he won't have the ones you are looking for regarding bass processing etc... I may be wrong though I used to have a subscription to his site so I am not too sure what is available if you don't have the subscription compared to if you do have the subscription.
