How did you come up with your name?

Post by Skrew » Fri Oct 21, 2011 10:21 pm

I'm in need of a production name but I'm stuck.

I don't want suggestions for names because after searching DSF Google, you guys are non-creative perverts.

So tell me, how'd you come up with your name?

Well I do more than dusbtep. I'm not biased when it comes to music. I'll be doing hip-hop, pop, r&b, rock, metal, ect. I'm not even much of a dubstep fan. This is just the only production forum where people know half way what their talking about. My friend said "Skave"

Mine is a play on words. I like deli sandwiches, and Syd Barrett is one of my favorite musicians, admittedly for the zippo lighter guitar slide through an old echo tape box ting he did back in the day.
Coincidentally, I happen to have a bit of a drug habit and have done my share of psychedelics.
Reverse guitar solo

there is a great unwritten tradition in metal bands to take your band name from another metal bands song. this is how i got mine & it is how you should get yours (ASSUMING you are a disciple of metal, if not you will look like a poseur)

I used to use my username, started to hate it though and there were some dudes from Manchester or something already using it, so I decided to change. In lack of any better option I took my second name and my surname and smacked them together, removed some letters, added some letters and I ended up with Drellah.
Thought it sounded cool, plus it sounds a little like Phaeleh and he is fucking awesome.

The first program I bought, and still use actually, was Acid music studio. I made a site for it called acidhedz, and liked the name enough that I just decided to use it as my producer name. Since most of my stuff is experimental and kinda weird it fits me anyway.

I find that the best names come from happy accidents and stuff that just pops into your head, the more you think about it, the harder it will be to think of a good one that fits, and isn't pretentious.

BS...

I already have the name Groovy Pagans set aside for when I manage to get a band together, and that sounds plenty good. Versatile too. I also plan to use 'Sold My Soul for Candy' at some point. It's from a poem I wrote. I also have used 'Abberant Atheist' and 'Necrosis Spiritus' for other projects.

All are names that either just popped into my head, or are from things I wrote.

Here are some tips. If you are actually a DJ, and you shouldn't use the title if you aren't one, keep it short and snappy. It needs to roll off the tongue. Using a verb or noun is common, using a nick name is good, if it's a good nickname, or at the very least is the sort of nickname that makes people want to know how you got it.

A name that describes what you are doing, or your music style in some way, but also how it relates to you, is good. You may have noticed that many producers use different names for each style they work in.

No matter what you need to keep the name short. Skrillex, Rusko, Armin, Deadmau5, Kraftwerk, Daft Punk, Pet Shop Boys, Paul Van Dyk, Orbital, Portishead, Orb, Brian Eno, KMFDM, etc, etc, etc.

This is just a sampling of various popular persona and groups. The most syllables you see is three, most are only one.

And remember, sometimes the name your parents gave you is just fine. Let your music do the talking and the name will follow, or you may not ever need one.

And I don't really like the name Skrew anymore. I want something unique and that sticks.

It's also the name of a heavy metal band from the early to late 90's. One of the first things I do when I think up a name for an album, song, project, story, game, whatever is search the name to see it anyone is using it.

This link is to a site full of name generators, some are funny, some are cool. They are made with story telling in mind, but you may get some interesting ideas there.

It was never actually a name I chosen for music. It was just what I used as a username at that time. It changes a lot. Obnoxious, Aishiteru, Ongaku, CoolBrees, FueldByRamen, ect. Just things I like, nothing original.

But now I actually am looking for something original.
