I'm getting some results out of that finally, you're right the filters in Twin2 ARE ridiculously precise, it's so crisp I love it. Just some simple automated movement gets it garbling nicely. And I'm just using FL's vocoder which works well enough and automating the formant frequency, it is sounding very tasty. The rest I'm distorting on my own to taste, that's simple enough. Thanks again for putting me onto Twin2, it's excellent.perileyes wrote:Thanks man I'm always happy to help. Ok, I see what specific details you're looking for. I can give you a more detailed description tomorrow if you'd like but essentially, the way I got it to get that talky motion was (with FabFilter Twin2) to set up the filters to be parallel and leave one of them off so it's just the clean signal, and have the other filter on lowpassed with a big bump in resonance and that ends boosting one specific little spot in the frequency spectrum, and Twin2 just has really unique and precise filters and it just gives you a bunch of crazy garbly mouth stuff like that. So then I assigned that filter's cutoff to a macro control in Ableton for the purpose of then being able to set a minimum and maximum range for the knob in order to have it so the full range of knob movement is just basically calibrated to only move over that little sweet spot in the cutoff. Here is a screenshot http://www.mediafire.com/?tlm550bxp7bneyo . It's all about that aforementioned stuff, AND the vocoder which you can see in the shot as well. Those are where 80% of the characteristics of that sound are coming from.

M-Talk is NOT how to sound like him.........
My sig has a link to a cover I did of scary monsters. Did 100% of it in Thor in Reason 5 , minus the vocals
Ha that's the only sample I used. But this is just a demonstration that every one of his synths can be made in nearly any program if you know what you're doing.

Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
Hey guys, just wanted to post my updated attempt at the sound and see whatcha think of it. It's obviously not spot-on nor would I expect it to be, it's just sort of a "how does this sound" test. This is out of thanks to Perileyes, mainly for putting me onto Fabfilter's products. The other stuff is just my own techniques and effects, the key is the filters from Fabfilter and, of course, automation.

Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
Updated my little loop up there with a better, more snarly take, give it another go.
Forgot to comment on Traxione's though, definitely awesome man. Hearing it recreated in it's entirety in a track definitely makes it come alive, all the synths came out veryy faithful to the original. The main bass however still sounds a tad thin, like it's missing some of the girth and wetness/saturation. We both are on the right path though, I think
For what it's worth, I'm not trying to copy that first BAWWW (lol) pitch bend in each measure, it's more of a different timbre all together the way he has it. So that's why the pitch bends in mine aren't similar, I was just trying to imitate everything after the pitch bend, the body of it where it's rising again.

Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
this is how i make Skrillex styled bass with fm8 and i show you how to reprocess it a couple ways. Its pretty close i feel
Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
good stuff sounding pretty gritty! Thanks for the video

Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
my main question is how do people like skrillex
Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
Ive been trying to create the sound at 0.13 -
Ive been trying to create that low bass at 0.13 with Operator. I run it through the vocoder on "modulation" (40 bands) setting and ive been trying the redux with it as well to get that talking sound but its too high. It ends up sounding more like "GYAAAA" rather than "GYERRR"...you know what i mean. Its the same with all the tutorial videos im watching, they're all getting that talking bass with the high sound rather than having that low sound, as if the mouth is only open a little bit.
This is the closest ive found to it -
but the sound he has doesnt have any body do it, it sounds empty/hollow.

Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
I see a lot of people now banging on about FM8 (which I do use sometimes), and although this is the synth Skrillex uses to make his signature growl bass used in scary monsters etc etc.
I was able to make (accidentally) the bass sound used in the Promises Remix using 3 instances of massive and not that many plugins.
The plugins I used were EQ, Compression, Chorus, Bitcrusher and limiter.
Massive can do what FM8 can do, but In a different way. I find that all it takes is a lot of tweaking and messing around and eventually you will get there.
The bass I am talking about is at 1:11

Example, please?
EDIT: Stumbled across this tutorial today, he is really, really, really close.

Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
Can I get some more pointers about modulating an EQ to get the vowel sounds? Seems like many use the Sugarbytes WOW, but I'd like to use an EQ instead and using the Ableton vowel EQ presets.
http://i52.tinypic.com/29avdiw.png
FM grind > fattening FX and notch filter > EQ8 (for vowels)
Every experiment I've done with modulating the EQ sounds like A) garbage and B) not like a vowel. I draw in EQ vowel shapes and modulate the peaks a few hundred Hz in different directions. Nothing gets a distinct talking sound. I only get these minor neuro-reece type modulations. When I modulated the valley too it didn't work.
Does anyone know what I'm missing? Seems like others in this thread are doing nearly exactly what I am, but with very different results.
Thanks!

Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
i think this was mentioned before... but in case not....
dont use the formant presets... you can use them as a reference point to get an idea about how your eq peaks should look. but it should be fairly obvious that you probably need some of those other frequencies that those presets are cutting out when making a bass sound.
so.. open up your formant presents, note what freqs the peaks are at... then go back to a standard Eq8 and start from scratch.. just boosting a couple of points, and maybe cutting between where you have boosted. roll off the bottom at around 100/200hz and the top above 8k maybe...
we are talking small boosts here, a few db.. more if it needs it. not 20db boosting and cutting everything but your boosted points.

how did you make the sound at 0.42, kind of sounds like something pitched up and reversed? Really interested to know what it isTraxione wrote:M-Talk is NOT how to sound like him.........
