Side Chain Compression in Logic?

Post by Tiger Blood » Sat Oct 29, 2011 2:50 pm

Hey guys

So im trying to learn to use side chaning to get my kicks and snares bought through the synth lines.

At the moment in logic i am doing the following but it dosent seem to do anything:

Send the kick drum to bus 1

add compressor to each fo my 3 parts of the synth (Hi Mid Sub) all linking them to bus 1

This dosent seem to be ducking the synths though (not sure if its a compressor parameter im not adjusting or just setup wrong)

Also I wanted to know if I want to side chain the snare aswell do i need to add each snare to a bus and add more side chains to them 3 synth lines to each bus?

I tried to bus all 3 synth parts to one bus and then side chain that bus to the kick but that didnt seem to do it either.

Thanks if anyone can explain this to me !

sounds like you're taking the right approach, but i have had some really annoying bugs when using busses as a sidechain input instead of audio tracks. It should still be doing something though. Try changing the compressor from RMS to Peak mode if it's not ducking enough, increase the ratio and lower the threshold.

i think you are complicating matters.

send kick to bus 1

on any of the synth channels put a compressor. in the top right of the comp window there is a sidechain input drop down menu. select bus 1 (or whatever bus). then change the threshold and ratio to suit.

make sure that your outputs on your eq'd / split signals are off if they are getting bussed back together.

hey yea i do this, ill give it another go. Do i need to send each synth line (hi, mid, sub) to the bus1 with independent compressors? or is there an easier way.

Also if i want to side chain my snare, so i need to bus each snare sample separately (i use 2-3 snares layered) then use compressors on each bass line for each snare sample (as then aswell as by 3 bass lines i would have 2-3 snare samples side chained leading to basslines needing upto 4 compressors on each)

If someone can explain to me how they do it it may help me understand.

If your using 3 snares layered you can just send each of these to the same bus then use one compressor on each bassline. If you want the comressor to duck your basslines extremely then just pull the threshold right down and take the ratio right up.so basicly the more extreme the settings the more noticeable the effect.
Also if you look at the compressor types in the top left corner normaly the default is platinum,go through these and try the sidechain some make the effect more noticeable.I use opto and vca for extreme ducking effects because i like the sound of the effect.Another thing you good do is just bounce out your layered snare then just use the audio track with the snare as the sidechain source.
You can use as many compressors as you want in you channel strip when using for sidechaing because the compressor won't effect the signal untill the sidechain source triggers it.I set up master effect busses on some of my tracks i will have maybe 4 compressors on one buss with all different sidechain sources for certain signals,i feel this gives me a lot more flexibility and keeps my mixer channels down to a minimum(serial compression).

right i think ive got it now, i made this clip just now with some noises testing out my side chains, although the yoyoy noise is loud as I havent finished with it i can hear side chains effect to the noise i think

If im honest i can't really hear the sidechaining so that could be because you have it subtle or something like that.As long as you set everything up rite and you can hear the ducking like you intended it then you should have no worrys.

Make sure to select no output on the bus aswel so your not doubling up your samples

Theres a meter at the top of the compressor that will visually tell you if its working. try setting it to peak, putting the threshold halfway down, attack all the way fast, release halfway up, compression at like 16. way more than you would want, but at least it will be painfully obvious whether or not it's working.

This is one of those things I couldn't help you with unless I was sitting there looking at it with you. Waste post, I know.
