@travis baker you got some good sounds so far, all i could think of is maybe some more melodic activity. nothin too heavy just a light square or sine wave melody played at a higher octave might make it sound fuller and sophisticated.

made this in one night, while black out drunk so i wont remember actually making it tomorrow but i figure i should get some feedback anywaysss/ i'm mixing on $20 logitech speakers so the levels are probably all wrong so let me know

Yo, so first of all.. here's my next bunch of feedback.. Thanks to everyone that's taken a listen.

Please be aware that I am still pretty new to all this, so any ADVICE that I give is merely what I'd personally try next.. I could be very wrong ha.

@freakquency
This is sounding really tasty. Really love the automation on the bassline. Its subtle as hell and not over the top, gives this track some deep, dirty vibes. I'm still trying (and failing) to get a sound quiet that tasty. What are you automating to get that tasty slow 'whomp' sound.. in fact the entire sound. Really love this track actually ha.

@-AudioSoma-
Really well produced. Maybe I've just not heard much stuff like this before but this has a really original vibe to it. Could literally listen to this in a low lit room and get my smoke on and have the best evening ever ha. MOAR PLEASE!

@Tiger Blood
The sound seems a little thin and I personally would add a little distortion / saturation and automate some parameters on that as well just to give a touch more movement. Split the EQ and don't distort the low end so much (if at all) so you can retain the clarity at the lower end and make the mids / highs a little wider. Really good starting point, just needs a little more modulation.

@xjb
The tom fill about 16 bars in is a little off timing wise. The drop is a lot of fun tho. My opinion is that its a little muddy tho. Really try and seperate the frequences a bit more and make a little more of the top end of the sounds. Some light distortion / chorus / saturation to the top end with really give those wicked sounds some more clarity. Maybe roll off the EQ to some of the basses at about 100hz and bring down the eq 100-400hz ish a few db. Those basses just need a little space and a little clarity.. the sounds are there for sure though, is just a minor EQ issue.

With my track I've taken on board what a lot of people have said and I've also aquired a better acapella. This track is unmastered at the moment and I wanna try it at a club (when I warm up) tonight. Any suggestions for how to apply a limited to slightly bring up the volume?

I think I've got the basses sounding nice and wide now, pretty fat as well. The snare is sounding better and the balance between the sub/bass/drums is better. Would love any feedback. Thanks guys.

@freakquency: love the song mate really, my only advice is that the bridge is a bit too "scary" i miss something (maybe that female scream) from there. the drops are awesome :]

@travis baker: nice vibes on your music, but mate, the sub a way too much i think you should cut at least 3db of it. really.. it pushes the shit out of my mind :D

@burgeamon: really love the whole track except one thing: the bassline under the vocal @1:25 and @2:45 is a bit boring but its my opinion :) oh and i think the vocals are a bit quiet

and here's mine:

Thanks man. I still have a little tweaking to do with the vocals I think. As for the verse parts, I got a little lazy truth be told ha. I tried a bunch of different basslines but because his vocal rhythm changes a lot it was difficult to get anything too fancy working there.

I like the sound of your track, I think the main bass sound is possibly a little too bass heavy and the notes for the second sound are a little dischordant but the sound itself is pretty gnarly.

Here is my WIP.. It's ummmmm.... VERY heavy. Probably not everybody's cup of tea. If you don't dig the vibe, maybe feedback on the sounds? No formal mixdown yet. Will be a new bass after the last part.

Soundcloud

Burgeamon - I really like the arpeggiated lead - Very nice! Sits nicely back in the mix and sounds a bit washy but in a really good way! The twinkly riser is nice. Voice fits really well with the stabs and sounds good and hypey. Slow filter opening on the vocal is very good! Old school style break sounds awesome, very jump uppy vibe. Beat sounds nice ;-) haha. Growly vocal bass is awesome and I love the stuff going on on top of it. Section that comes in at 1min 23 is my favourite part.. That Pro Green? Great composition overall, with a good mixdown it'll be awesome!

Mixe3y - Whoa.. This track really thumps.. Loud as anything! Kick drum is very nice.. Not too sure about that snare sound, is a bit metallic for my liking but can see a lot would dig it. Synths work great together and I like the progression. "Yeah " sample is awesome for a riser type thing. Very good drop.. Dirty but not toooo dirty (which is more than I can say for my WIP). Awesome work!

GSM0 - For a first song this is wicked! Kick drum sounds quite woody which means you have maybe too much midrange in there. Bass is dirty though and I like the break at 1min 04 just before it ends. One thing I'd suggest is that when you EQ something.. Do it in the mix and then take a little peak at a spectrum analyser on the master channel after that.. Make sure you are filling up the top end enough. It is quite common in this kind of music to have songs which are very bottom heavy and not psychoacoustically pleasing enough on the highs - Having said that, awesome job!

DJ Sampletank - Love the atmosphere in the intro!! Dark synth that creeps in is great.. I think the washy voice atmosphere could definitely be louder. Hats coming in now.. This has a great vibe. I like the filter automation/modulation or whatever it is. The hats from 50 secs to drop sound a bit out of place. The bass is VERY bitcrushed... I see a lot of people would like this, is a bit blatant for me.. Could do with a lot of frequencies notched out imo. The high pitched atmospheric synth that is predominant at 1min 45 needs a LOT of EQing! I like the dark atmosphere though

amphibian - I like the swirly filteredness behind the pipes. FM type of sound that creeps in at 14 secs is great and fits really well. WHOAAAA. That beat is VERY nice, sir. The neuro stab is great and atmospheric too. The sub bassline is great and fits very well with the synth. Stereo separation and panning work is exceptional. Great mixdown too. GREAT mixdown. Awesome job bud

freakquency - Love the knocky kick and the weird pitched vocal thing! The chorusing or phasing on the beat at 14 secs is amazing. I love the FMness in the bass. Very atmospheric but very heavy. Good modulation over time on the bass too. Great breakdown and awesome decision in changing the bass up. Big fan of the bass at 1min 54 seconds and the use of delay at 2min 03 is great.

amphibian wrote:@freakquency - sounding a LOT better, but still needs some work. That mono'd bass at the start now really gives the track some focus, whereas before it was just awash with stereo image. Good improvement. Keep at it though, there is still a little eq needed to make the elements to keep to themselves. Also, could just be my headphones but that ride sounds slightly off-key. Again, not 100% sure, as not on studio monitors atm. Keep at it dude :)
wicked. thanks man. i will keep trying as i always do.

@Burgeamon - you have indeed made the overall levels better and it does sound good. i still think you should take out the high pitched noise on every 3rd beat at the drop, and just have the chords louder. i personally think it would sound a hell of a lot better.
as for limiting and loudness, what i usually do myself is bounce down the whole track, eq a little bit and use the multipressor in logic which compresses 4 different bands of frequencies at the same time. take down the threshold until you can see some movement and then apply the amount you took it down by as make-up gain. then i use Adlimit subtly to bring all the levels up to a good volume. however, you do need to have a decent amount of headroom available before doing this as it otherwise will probably lead to overloading.

my gritty bass sound is pretty simple actually. the only thing im automating is the wave-table position of the oscillator and the cutoff of the filter.
hope that helps.

@Mixe3y - nice tune man. only thing id say is maybe take out some of the high frequencies of the first growl at the drop because it sounds a little too distorted and crackly? and maybe switch up the beat halfway through would be wicked.

@Ascian - dirtyy tune. i like it. loving the neurofunk bass at the drop. i have yet to make one myself that i actually like so big ups on yours.

love the crunchy kick when it comes in. Is very epic and Metalic. Bassline is awesome.. fucking evil sounding, maybe a tad bassy.. but only a touch. Has a real metallic sludge feeling to it.

You mention 'with a good mixdown it'll be awesome'.. just curious... as noob like as this will sound.. what exactly is a mixdown in the context that you mean here. What is difference between the composition, sampling, resampling of the piece and then the mixdown?

Sounds stupid as hell I know ha.

Not stupid at all mate! Thanks for the comments on my track!

Composition, sampling and resampling are nothing to do with mixdown so ignore those. Mixdown is ESSENTIALLY making sure the relative volumes of each instrument is right against one another. It is a partly artistic and partly scientific process. For example, the stab at 56 seconds in your WIP.. It sounds too "up front" against the other instruments in my subjective opinion. There are a few things to do about that. 1) Try turning it down, see if it fixes it. 2) EQ some of the lesser audible frequencies out of the sound which will in turn make the synth sound pretty much the same except less powerful, therefore sitting it back in the mix. 3) Try adding some reverb. Parallel at first, then putting it on the channel and guaging the dry/wet right to get a good balance between being a predominant part of the track and sitting it back in the mix.

Hope that made sense!

Yeah that makes sense. I think what I may do is play it out on a few systems now and in a weeks time come back, bounce down each try and remix it but take a lot more care about EQ'ing etc. I've low cut most things to give the sub space and other bits and pieces but it probably just wants me to go back through it from fresh for an afternoon and take each instrument and EQ out a bunch of freq's that aren't affecting the sound. Will prob make everything much cleaner.

Thanks for you advice! This sort of stuff is invaluble.

@mixe3y: the drop is brilliant cos it is griimeeyy but at the same time its got an upbeat vibe about it :D

@Burgeamon: sick remix man, got a nice bassline rythm goin on and im sure that once its mastered it will sound massive ;D

Ascian - Cheer dude, respect for the in depth feedback. Also, your is really nice man, love the intro. Great vibes throughout.

Mixe3y - Nice one man, real upbeat vibes, but still got that dirtier side, while maintaining the happy vibes. Enjoying it a bunch.

@Burgeamon this is some proper production! i think this is pretty dope, the words are very clean. personally, i would take out the little robot voice near the end that goes "dubstep dubstep dubstep". i feel like it doesnt give the listener enough credit, like they dont know what dubstep is or something :lol: plenty of my buddies would definitely drop this in sets. keep up the good work!

also, thank you for the kind words! thats exactly the vibe i was going for.

@mix3y i like the build up and the way you drop the pitch on the yeah. the drop smashes hard, but the lead in the drop is out of tune on my monitors. was kind of giving me a headache, maybe try to clean it up a little bit?

@ascian i love the how the lead synth in the build up has a different kind of rhythm than the drop, its very interesting and makes me think. im loving the drop! how did you do that grimy bass? it has this crushing sound that sort of reminds me of KOAN sound basses. make it longer! i wanna hear what you do with this.

@jizzman the build up seems a little lacking to me. i would play with some filters on that lead or put some grimey ambient atmosphere behind it. the drop is heavy, definitely shreds. good usage of vocal samples. after the waddup biatch, i would change up the bass to keep the listener guessing.

heres my track with some updates to it ;-)

@burgeamon agreeing with mixe3y about the vocals being a bit quiet, just at the rap part though, and like he said the bassline is bit boring but thats okay since you can just make it less prominent and bring out Intelligibleness and clarity on the rap instead, wich is the main thing here right?
Also an extremely personal opinion: but at 1:50 isnt a piano with exactly that rythm getting overused/cheesy?
I Like the "mini-break" womps at 1:07

@ascian really cant dig the intro melody, cant relly explain more than it feels quite... "dead"? vague i know :6:. Nice sounds though.
nice stereo tricks in the drop!

@jizzman
Something seems off about the open hihat in relation to the closed hihat, pan and eq them together a bit more I'd say. that or my hearing is a bit tired.
And I think your womps has a bit much highfreq content over to long time frames, should just spike with the amount you have in my opinion. might let hihat and similar stuff shine a bit more, and save some listening fatigue.

cheers!

JizzMan - nice track, but maybe get in some more atmosphere?
Ascian - really nice track! i cant really say anything bad about it, just keep it going
mixe3y - nice grimey track there mate, anly thing i can think of is to maybe cut off some high freq on that drop

heres mine, tell me whats good/bad and how it can be improved and be as honest as you can, im here to learn

@mixe3y- big one ; really dig that melo , that guitar at 2:00 doesnt fit that well imo ; tweak it out a bit maybe? production is solid though for sure.
@BOMA- nice , i like that synth line ; made me think of the neptunes, this ones a smaher ; id bring the snare up a bit. love that sub line.should throw in some fx/pads around the 2 minute mark to make it a bit more interesting ; i like this one though.
@audiosome- that stab is sex and that bass is smooth as shit ; i like the chilled yet dark vibes i get off this ; sequencing is really good the 2 minute mark is funky as hell and that vocal sample is bangin'/ goodshit
Im tryna get into a little house now ; here's one of my attempts ; i think the sequencing needs work ; things seem to come to quickly.

@ Rebel: Great track, the melody is absolutely awesome. You should bring out the kick more I think.

@ Boman: NIce, however, I'd raise the volume of the wobble and the snare a bit and lower the synth.

@ -AudioSoma- : That track really has a nice vibe. The stabs are amazing. Great work!!!

@ Jizzman: Incredible bass sound, really powerful. But I'd leave out the yoys, they don't really fit I think.

@ Mixe3y: Actually quite nice ideas. But the bass sounds are a bit muddy, try finding where that sits and notching it out.

@ Burgeamon: Great, the synths are incredible, they really add to the atmosphere and the vocals fit very well. ;)

Now, here's my track again, I beefed up the drums a bit by using parallel compression and completed the 8 bar phrase now. Please tell me what you think guys. ;)
