Hi All,
This is my first post and I plan on getting very involved on these forums. The question that I'm about to ask has probably been posed before, but I'm having a difficult time finding a thread that addresses the question in a way that is somewhat definitive. My question is this: I'm very concerned about the legality of sampling other tracks. For the most part, all I really want to do is use vocals from other tracks, not the rest of the music. I would hate to come up with a remix that is somewhat successful, only to be sued into the ground by a record label for it. Should I be worried about the legal ramifications of using a few seconds of choruses from other songs (some of which are very popular) in my music? Thanks in advance, everyone

You may sample whatever you like, but the more you sample the harder it makes it for record labels to sign it as there is a large amount put towards sample clearance or paying out royalties to whoever is due. Sampling sounds and manipulating them so much that the original is barely recognisable is fair enough, but sampling vocals from commercial music, from a legal stand point, is a huge nightmare if it ever comes to the point where you are offered a release.
Try not to sample vocals and get your own unique vocals recorded. It won't sound generic anymore and from a release perspective, it is far easier.

Yes. You should also worry about the musical implications of such sampling.

one of my tunes got denied getting put on a radio playlist because they spotted an uncleared sample.
it wasnt exactly subtle, but its still pretty suprising.
moral of the story: stay away from motown.
