Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
@ascian - thanks heaps for the input. You're right, not my cup of tea - but this thread isn't for subjectivity wars
Intro isn't bad, though that snare seems really light. Especially in that drop. When you have a tune that heavy, that snare needs to slap you across the face and let you know you're it's bitch. It failed in that respect, I slapped it back. I needs more weight, and a bit more top end, and some more release. Could raise it also by a couple of dbs.

I finally learnt how to use Logic this morning and made this over a few hours, just don't know where to go with this without it getting too housey and boring

Thanks for all the feedback there guys. I've finished off that tune and stuck it online at http://soundcloud.com/i-am-bitches/prof ... en-monster
I've had to power down for the night due to neighbours but tomorrow on the way to work I'll get some feedback together for anyone on the past couple of pages.
Here's one I've been working on whilst I've been to and from Ireland this weekend. Its different and another remix.

I know you know the rules dude, as you've followed them before. If you can't post feedback before a new tune - don't post. Simple as that.Burgeamon wrote:Thanks for all the feedback there guys. I've finished off that tune and stuck it online at http://soundcloud.com/i-am-bitches/prof ... en-monster

Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
@tiger blood- you have a good foundation for the drums but i believe that they could use more rhythmic action. i think another snare (one with a lot of reverb/white noise maybe?) and an open hat leading into every kick drum at the first beat could be put in there to help improve the flow and give it a little more life. also i would use parallel compression to make the drums sound a lot bigger. good start
@darkow, i can tell the song has good components. you've got huge drums and giant reverby sounds which i really like. but im gonna give you the opposite advice that i gave tiger blood- the drums sound a little too compressed. especially for the intro, the level of the hats could be taken down, or maybe cut some more of their low frequencies to give them more of airy feel and not such a metallic feel. i think the focus of the intro shouldn't be the hats, and when i first listened, all i could really hear were the hats. very cool sounds you got though especially with that midrange bass
@bRRRz- wow very sick riffs you got there with the midrange bass. i like everything you have right now in the song, but it still feels like its missing something. i think an intro should convince the listener that the song is going to be awesome, and i found myself skipping ahead through the sparse parts with only kick drums to get to the drop. your bass riffs are perfect though you just need something great for your intro to keep the attention of the listener. maybe try something really unique to give the song a flavor that no other song has. a vocal sample or pad could be a good start.
and heres my work in progress, i appreciate any feedback

@Amphibian: Nice vibes, swear I've heard that snare somewhere before. My only criticism at this stage is it could get a little repetitive.
@bRRRz: Ideas are there, just need to fill in the space, you have a lot of free room to play with and for that style of DS it needs to be filled. But the concept is in place, and will work.
@Rebel:
Heres mine for your criticism, be harsh.

Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
Sorry for not playing by the rules :p Here's some feedback.
@mtl6
The bass stabs at 0.20ish seem a little forward in the mix.. perhaps a tad loud or a really subtle reverb would help. When it comes back in after a minute it feels a little sudden. Again, this could just be a slight tweak to the volume. I also feel the vocal needs to be a bit louder as its getting a touch lost in the rest of the track.
@Astral
All over the plinky bells at the beginning. When it drops I feel the bass needs be a little thicker. Its got good characteristics. Maybe a slight volume change as well for a touch more impact. Wicked vibes though. The drop at 1.50 is sweet. Almost a percussive wobble sound. Gives it a great rhythm.
@tigerblood
Drums need a little work. Needs some hats or something (even really, really subtle) just to add a little bounce to the rhythm. Really like the sound at the drop.. That could be really really big.
@AudioSoma
Really, REALLY love the vibe to the track. All the sounds seem really well balanced and there is a lot of space to let the track breathe. Very nice work.
@Darkow
Your sounds are fucking incredible and you've chopped them up really nice. The drums get lost for me at the drop and a meaty kick punching through would make this track gnarly as fuck. How did you make that bass.. Its something special.
@Ascian
Totally forgot who you were. The last track I created (the pro green one) was one I made as I was following your tutorials. I wasn't getting anywhere with a lot of ideas I was having so went back to basics, started a clean project and started with the drums and your tutorials have given me a fuck load of good advice and improved the quality of what I've done dramatically and very quickly. Thank you. Now, get the next lot of bass production tutorials online :p
I actually uploaded the wrong version of my WIP anyway where the bass is far too loud and I hadn't finished cutting it up at the time so there were wrong notes in places. That and the hihats were far too loud.

Darkow : Nice track dude, I love the dark vibes in there. It takes a little too long to get to the bit most folks wanna hear, but
thats just personal taste really. Really like the parts where it kinda breaks down a little. Drums could do with more punch,
but sounding real nice.
Burgeamon : Man thats fuckin' sick, quite beautifull even with the snarling bass. Nothing negative to say to that.
Astral : Really like the intro, the rolls on the snare give it a nice marching feel. When it starts up proper it's bangin man, real nice
vibes, atmospheric and well put together. Personal taste, I'd like a bit more low end, and a deeper kick, but like I say, it's
personal taste.
Right guys, here is my newest track, I got this version finished after struggling for a while actually making the track how I wanted it (thus it's length). Anyway any and all feedback, and critique is really appreciated.
And to save time, the last half of the track, except for the breaks, is the same(being the verse and chorus again) - so there is no need to listen to it all lol.
Cheers guys.

Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
@astral - the kick is too weight and 'chunky' if you get what I mean, for the vibe you have going, I would suggest a more snappy, punchier kick. The snare, layer with a clap, give it reverb and space. Add more atmosphere. Give your drum rolls some space as well.
Add random "ping" effects here and there i.e. one shots such as congas or bongos with lots of reverb decay and widen them to give the spaced out distance atmosphere.
Otherwise, great ideas. Like the vibe you have. Also, take a listen to "Rawtones(Koan Sound and Asa Remix)" I always think it's a good idea to check what other songs fit a similar vibe to your own tunes and look for ideas in their songs as well.
@mtl6 DRUMS NEED LOTS OF WORK. The sub bass needs work too. Its shite
Vocals are beautiful, they need to be put up though. I'm not a fan of repetitive wobbles, I find basslines need to evole or just not have the standard lfo ---> cutoff on lowpass.
Advice for EVERYONE. I might sound like an arrogant tnuc but hey I've seen it help. add PSP Vintage Warmer to your Drums Bus and increase the knee slightly, it excites and fattens the sound. (even icicle uses the techique.)
mtl6: Peak your kick round about 90-120hz depending on your preference and shape your snare.
I swear, you're not layering. Do so, it is imperative.
1."Meaty" mid range punch kick
2.Bassy kick, low end
3.Snappy/Clicky kick for high end.
Snares the same. layer with claps, delay one or two hits by a SLIGHT millisecond fo phatness.
@Tiger Blood: Your kick needs help. layer, phatten and peak the EQ like a motherfucker. Follow the same formula as I've stated for mtl6.
Add claps to your snare and add some reverb to it. PSP Vintage Warmer to excite it further.
Riser FX or any build effects of the same kind and more depth to your tunes than you can imagine, however, since I see its still WIP. I assume everyone of you are aware of this.
Hope this helps.
Here's a remix I'm busy with for a DJ Shadow competition.

Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
my feedback is kinda useless.
Burgeamon: very nice, sounds great as well.
astral: live sounding drums in dubstep dosnt do it for my, sounds cool tho.
ampibian: nice vibe, love the grunty bass, keeps it interesting.
might take the wobble bits out ay? or arrange em better at least.

I love you tunes mate it is most certainly a cup of tea i would partake in lol.You make some of the heaviest tracks on the forum you manny and wookie are definitely up there for making complete bangers.Congrats on the vids too its good someone goes to the trouble of doing this.On your new track its still young but i really like the direction you going with it got some real potential.
@GSMO
Not my cup of tea
but hands down pisses over my first track lol.Just keep it up mate sample selection is ok,sample placement is ok too just need to brush up on the sound design.
To the production bible for you and knuckle down.
@Audiosoma
Really feeling the glitch hop track your doing,really like all the sounds and the vibe to the track,my only critique would be variation is a bit lacking,feels like you wait to long for a change but it is a wip so you was probably getting to that.I really enjoyed it mate and would like to hear it finished.
@Tigerblood
Being as i know you have a massive learning curve with learning logic and all the other ish that comes with making tunes your coming along nicely,just keep your nut down and practice practice practice,i get the feeling you want to make brostep but i feel you should branch out into chilled stuff aswell because becoming well rounded will make you a better producer in my opinion so the more styles the better but i like what your doing for a beginner so keep it up.
Right here i go again with my wip,i listened to all the constructive criticism and have gone away and worked on the hard panning,i liked it but have toned it down a touch,also i have made the arrangement a LOT more interesting than before and turned the snare down a touch.I processed the drums and have attempted to mix,really i want to hear people's opinions on the mix,i know the panning still isn't gonna be everyones cup of tea and the tune itself is pretty hard and dark but please go easy lol.

I like the vibe of the track but that panning is way too aggressive and its a little distracting. That dirty little bassline seems way to quiet as well.. the sound is def there but needs to be bought forward a bit.
@DJ Sampletank
Chilled.. fuzzy vibes. I like it!
@Phizicist
This one is shaping up nicely. Its all really well balanced but its a little repetitive. Other than that its sounding great.
@travis baker
Holy fuck that is a deep. This could easily be part of my post-night-out-blaze-and-chill playlist.
OK...here is my current WIP. I'm really liking this one.. its a bit different and a remix of one of my fav songs of this year. Ignore the riser at the beginning... its sound soundcloud would let me upload it.

@Burgeamon.
those vocals are gay, the guitar is BEAUTIFUL.
That drop is solid, try letting it drop without the vocals and guitar, let it shine man!
because you could come up with a sick contrast between the melodic beauty and the grotesque dark drop.
Otherwise, sick tune. would like to know how you got those basslines, intense shit.

Your sounds are fucking incredible and you've chopped them up really nice. The drums get lost for me at the drop and a meaty kick punching through would make this track gnarly as fuck. How did you make that bass.. Its something special.
Thanks very much . Im working on that right now
I resampled and chopped the bass up a fuck load. like a cheff chopping his onions and then EQ'd lol, you rate I should use it as a kind of trademark sound or vibe or something?

@tigerblood - I would say add some more reverb to your snare (layer it a bit more), regarding the synth at the end., perhaps more of the kick drum, try swing out the hats a bit more to create more movement. Compress and EQ the snare, the kick and the hats. compression is the shit man! will work wonders. Otherwise sounding like a good start to something really cool man.
@atticuh - The snare and kick needs more punch. Layer your snare, perhaps more sub bass on the track.
@DJ sampletank - Sounding really cool. Relaxing vibes! Only thing I can think of is lowering the side chain compression on the bass bit at 2:46ish. Its sounding like the volume is dropping and slowly raising, I would say keep that vibe but shorten the amplitude or rise time a tiny bit so it still has that movement but not as harsh.
************
Further WIP Any further suggestions? I think it needs a lead melody somewhere or something? Or something more melodic in the intro?

Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
Thanks everybody for the feedback on my last piece - Took everything into account and have changed a butt load!
Have another WIP going on... Would like people to mainly feedback on the intro as the drop is no where near done.. Just a bunch of random not very processed, unmixed sounds at the moment.
Soundcloud
Amphibian - Cheers for pointing out snare issues, I check the project and I hadn't even touched any of the layered snares with EQ or any post processing so it's all fixed now!
Burgeamon - When I gave you feedback I wrote "Nice beat, haha" as I thought I had recognised it from somewhere! I am editing part 3 as we speak
mtl6 - I like the ravey hats and the clap is very nice. Good filtering on the pad/synth type thing. I like the ravey vibe.. Kick and snare need to be brought forward in the mix more and the hats need to be more crisp with more high end and compression. Really like the tune though, awesome!
DJ Sampletank - Love the voice in the intro..! Pad sounds great with it, too. Very chilled out, love it. The voice in the intro needs to be taken down a little in volume I think, either that or the drums need more punch.. Yeah I think it's definitely the drums actually. Oops, snare coming in now and snare sounds great and punchy (maybe a little loud), so just work on that kick a little. Breakdown is nice and I like how the beat comes back in. The delay on the snare needs a little variety.
Phizicist - Great energy to the track. The rides sound great. Well mixed sub bass. Vocal fits very well. Reese is quite nice but needs to be a lot more up front in the mix!
lloydy - Really like the sample in the intro. Beat is good, I like the shaker/tamourine thing.. Maybe slightly too much panning, like it is too wide.. Makes it hard to concentrate on the tune. That definitely needs fixing before anything else imo. I like the growly reesey wobble though, very nice.
atticuh - Wow! Love the instruments.. Great retro vibe.. Haha. This is so fun, I really like it! It definitely needs some general attention.... Drums needs to be far more punchy.. Layer them, EQ each layer and use a volume envelope on each layer to make sure you get whichever part of the drum you want. Parallel compression. Compression over mix. I like the growly reese though....? Makes me think you know your stuff and the lack of punch in the drums is purposeful?
Darkow - I like the creepy vocals in the intro. The drums sound so weak though, that needs changing! VERY evil.. I really like this. With a lot more clarity it'll be pretty insane!
adambrown666 - post feedback to at least 3 others before posting your own tune

Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
I was intending for the drum levels to be slightly lower; however, after taking another look at my project file, I noticed the level of my parallel comp bus to be WAY too low.Ascian wrote: atticuh - Wow!
