do it or all the money goes to robbie williams and elton john. also make sure dj's know the right names of tunes and the right production credits.

in theory, licensees i.e. club owners should be asking DJs for a playlist of every tune they play in a set - it's our responsibility to note every tune and hand them over. These playlists should then be sent to the PRS, who then tot up every tune that's been played and divide up all the money between every registered artist/publisher. This also includes pubs etc - internet jukeboxes do this automatically so all your Britney & Robbie tracks are flagged up much more often than DMZ plates, so basically money that actually belongs to underground artists is being paid to major labels and pop singers instead.

That's in theory though, and doesn't really happen too often. Some DJs submit a monthly chart which is supposed to represent what they've played the most in a month, and the PRS can use this in lieu of actual playlists.

There was a long thread on DOA, started by Dom & Roland, all about this. Unfortunately the Dogs all got the wrong end of the stick and thought he was asking them to pay more money, which is not the case at all.

cool, so wheres the money that the prs should be paying the producers come from? do nights like dmz have to sort out the prs? or is it that mass's job? is it a cut of PUL fees or something?
more djs should blatently get on this tho! shocking to think you're otherwise lining pop stars pockets...

read the Dom thread on DOA. basically all the money is collected from venues and goes into a pot. all the artist who are on the playlists get the dinero, artists who are played but are not registered dont get shit. thus, what MAH, thinKing and others are trying to say, is that theres tons of money out there, and if your getting played, its your responibility to get your piece of the pie.

its not about the money, as dom puts it:

"It's only the dj's that can make a difference....

Ultimately it will mean there is more work for dj's because more artists will be able to afford to stay at home and make music...."

hope that helps :)

the PRS collects the license fee from licensed premises i.e. clubs & pubs - this is what is divided up between all registered artists, minus the cut which the PRS takes. There is nothing for DJs or promoters to pay at all.

Don't forget to join the PPL too...they pay you as a performer on the track and if you're a label, half the royalty goes to you, and the remainder split equally between the performers. Think it's still free to join.

I 100% agree that musicians should be awarded for their work but organisations like PRS, SPA, SABAM etc. are a royal pain in the ass for (foreign) promoters.

Example: me, as a promoter, has to fill in a playlist for every dj that plays at my party. In theory, this playlist is scanned for composers that are registered with above mentioned organisations. Problem 1: It's impossible to fill in a complete tracklist for every dj. Problem 2: They don't scan for tracktitels but artists. In case a dub is played from an artist that isn't registered, I (the promoter) still have to pay a fee for it. In theory this fee will be kept aside untill that specific track is registered & then the fee will be paid out to the artist. Safe to say this NEVER happens. The money dissapears into the pockets of local big artists.

I am wondering if well known producers in the dubstep scene ever see a dime from foreign organisations. Because for the money I have to pay I could easily book another dj or invest more money in the ones already playing and create more exposure for him/her.

I agree radio stations (if they have the funds) need to pay royalties. But a promoter or a dj already pays this when buying the record. So why should we cough up again if most of it never reaches the artists. It's a f*cked up situation.

At Dec 2006 it was £20.35 per minute for Radio 1...a commision to PRS will come off this too (which is now 10% if memory serves so MAH's £18 odd is right):

Blizzard, did you share the songwriting on that track? If so, the royalty is split between you and your co-writers.
