VST for live DJ effects?

Post by sleightmind » Wed Nov 02, 2011 3:26 pm

Hey all. So I want to start using Ableton to DJ live. I've built some pretty intricate sets in Ableton and I want to start playing them out. What I'd like to find is a VST that I can throw on the master channel to perform some live effects. So if I want to chop things up a bit, or if the crowd calls a rewind, I can pop open the VST and hit a button and have it do a backspin or glitch it up or whatever. Any ideas? For you Ableton DJ's, what do you use to play live? Thanks.

Stutter Edit from iZotope is good for glitched, chopped, and build up type effects. Although you have to have a MIDI controller to control the gestures. :D

i use ill.gates effects racks and a custom self built dj template and some other free dj effects racks i found on the web awhile back.

The ableton pros that i follow (bassnectar, datsik, vadim, ill.gates) use a variant of the Ill.gates dj template (which includes fx racks and punch in effects).

M lovers dj racks free stuff i use in my custom tempalte.

also Suppatrigga can give you some on the fly "rewind" type platter stop effects if you set the paramters correctly.

For live DJ effects you can use Music FX Live which is a real time effect software specially designed for DJs. This is not another DJ mix program. It does only one thing, but it does it well: adding effects to live audio.

The audio source can be either a file on your computer, an audio stream coming from line input (eg. from you DJ mixer or CD player) or - which is the best part - any music software running on your computer. Music FX Live installs a virtual ASIO sound driver on your computer which creates a bridge between any music software (for example Ableton Live, Reason, Traktor, Virtual DJ) and Music FX Live itself. So you can add effects to the sound coming from the other software in real time.

You can choose from many effects and you can change many parameters of them. You can automate parameter changes with LFO.

One of the best features of Music FX Live is that you can control the effects with the built-in touchpad of your laptop. You can select which effect parameters you want to control. If you touch the mousepad, the effect turns on. As you are moving your finger on the pad, the effect parameters are changed, and if you release the mousepad, the effect turns off.

You can watch many videos of the software on the website. You can also download the free trial of Music FX Live.

I just started Djing with ableton live and I've been looking for some effects also. Have you guys had any luck with ableton's built in dj effect racks? Fade to grey is good but most of them just look like variations of beat repeat. It would be nice if they had some sort of reference for all of them since there's quite a few.
