Sounds cool. How do they speed it up?Nevalo wrote:ketamine wrote:To be honest the pace is just boring for most people. That's why you only see old men playing it, or savants who can crunch numbers but can't brush their own teeth.
Personally I have ADHD and can't sit and stare in silence for that long or keep grid data / formulas in my head at once, nor do I even want to. Ironically I'm good at Poker...
speed chess is the game for you then...
i remember going to a pub in town, and the owner used to have a "beat me in speed chess and get free pints" thingy... the problem was, he was a fuckin Chess Master... no one ever bet him lol

They use timers, you get some form of "punisment", for lack of a better word, for going over a time limit. I hate these though, I take my time thinking about moves.

Re: chess
^ you just add a time parameter to each move eg. max 1minute per move....
makes the game go alot quicker, and can help if your not the greatest player because it tends to disrupt good players ability to think 3/4 moves ahead

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Gameknot.com yet - it's a chess website where you can play full games (as in three days a turn or something), or blitz chess where each player has a total of five minutes for all their moves. I got pretty addicted to blitz chess for a while! The website is free, all you need to do is register.

Sounds good, would anyone on here be up for a mini-tournament on one of these sites? Re: chess
I used to play in competitions when I was a yout. Mostly gave up because all the people who were less good than me had already given up and I was just getting beasted all the time
Basically, two timers with buttons on top of each. While you're thinking, your timer runs down. You move, you hit your button, your timer stops and your opponent's starts. If either player runs out of time, they lose.
If you use a short time (like five minutes each or one minute each) it becomes a really big part of the game and it turns into a game of 'who can do something halfway sensible quickly', if you use a longer time limit it just means that you both have to spend about the same amount of time thinking about stuff.
It sounds like overcomplicating things, but it's actually pretty good for friendly games - I naturally get competitive about stuff and will tend to turn quick, fun games into drawn out ponder-fests (while getting annoyed that the other player is spending ages thinking about their moves) and a clock stops that happening. Also it means that if your housemate happens to be a grandmaster, you can just give them two minutes while you have half an hour and get a fun game for both of you.

Re: chess

Pretty similar to chess in some ways, a couple of the pieces have different moves and there are a couple pieces that dont exist in chess. Main difference is that when you capture an opponents piece you can drop it back anywhere on the board as one of your pieces. Also any of your pieces that manage to get to the enemy ranks (last 3 lines) you can choose to promote.

Chess is brilliant; one of my biggest past times; I used to have a board set up and play against myself when i was a bit stuck on working on tunes to keep my mind occupied but alas; its been taken down for a while now - haven't even thought of asking any of my mates if they know how to play haha!

things can get hostile quick if you pull that move and your opponent thinks you're trying to cheat...slothrop wrote:Yes, but in all the time I've played I don't think I've ever been in a situation where it applied.Coppola wrote:i was reading about chess yesterday and only just discovered the en passant rule? does everyone else play this rule too?

Yeah, kid did it to me the other day, all the people watching were like "Nooo, wtf is that?!?!?!"
I still had that kid though... Well, until the bell rang and he literally ran from the game.

not much of a chess player, I don't have the patience for it, but does anyone else play Backgammon? Probably my favourite board game.
