Reason Producer Certificate Program
http://www.dubspot.com/programs/reason- ... 07#courses
Was wondering if anyone has taken/completed this 6-level course and could elaborate on what the educational worth was. I've been basically teaching myself Reason for 8+ months now and was wondering how much I would learn from taking the course versus how much knowledge I have gained on my own. The course is $5500 so obviously it's quite a decision to make.
I want to get myself involved in a music production course (whether it be through an independent educational source such as dubspot, or an actual degree program such as the one available through Full Sail University), but I was hoping to find one that is either general enough that I can utilize Reason, or specific enough to Reason. I also discovered that Berklee offers a 3-credit Reason course, but it sounds a little simplistic in comparison to the dubspot program. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks

Re: Reason Producer Certificate Program
fuck everything about that...but I guess the university I go to costs about that much per course, minus room n board. I still can't imagine you would walk away with $5000 worth of knowledge when you can rtfm, youtube, or get the reason video that I got for $20 a few years ago when I first started out.

I would personally advise against enrolling in such a course. mainly due to cost. when following an education in music, I think it is important to try and weigh up all your options. look at music production university programs, where at least at the end of it you have a degree that will enable you to go into other fields not relating to music.
in the meantime read the reason manual (it's brilliant and very well written).
read these http://www.propellerheads.se/substance/ ... ng-reason/
and watch the 52 tips and tricks series with james bernard.
there is a lot of information covered in just those (all supplied by propellerheads).

You don't have to take the "certificate" program, there are non cert options for cheaper. Also, the instructors who teach you are very experienced and known professionals, I guarantee you will learn things you never thought of.. Sure some things about it are redundant, but there are details that would take years to learn, if you have tons of time to learn it yourself like a full time job, then don't do it, but if you can afford it, and want the knowledge expedited , and thouroughly learned , it will be a great experience. The Berklee online programs are very beneficial and have won awards. But they are not for everyone, it's like saying, I love to work on Hondas, should I take that course to become a honda certified mechanic?
They are very in depth about teaching it, there are minute details in Reason even the most experienced user may not be aware of.

Re: Reason Producer Certificate Program
I've seen the Reason tips videos, been reading the manual as I go, etc. as you guys have suggested. Your reactions make me think that I should maybe do the music production program through Full Sail University, as I would walk away with a bachelor's in music production. Having a degree in my field of interest would help me keep my occupation in the field (or at least give me a better chance of it, seeing as I would have some sort of credentials). I've already gone to school for music production for a year at a school that I really came to dislike, but I'll have some transfer credits.
I was wondering if anyone who has received a degree in music production could give light to where they work/what they do these days.
This is just the hardest decision I have ever had to make. Will I be able to teach myself what I need to in order to become great music producer and have a future in the field, whilst in the meantime supporting myself through 3rd shift jobs and the like? Or should I get a degree, which will *potentially* help me earn more money than without one and will more easily channel me towards a job in production?
I'm sure most of ya'll who have been at it for years have come across a similar predicament... what were your top deciding factors?
Thanks for the response about the dubspot program... yeah I feel now that spending that much on a program that doesn't yield a degree is pretty preposterous.

Hey, I was wondering if you might be able to give an example of a non-certificate program that you've come across...tintala wrote:You don't have to take the "certificate" program, there are non cert options for cheaper. Re: Reason Producer Certificate Program
Watch out with universities like Full Sail. I was considering it myself but it's not accredited, and extremely expensive for such a short course.

$5500 to learn reason...? Rather spend that kind of money on lessons to become a grade 6 pianist.
Pick up a book... have a quick read. Apply, reapply, make your own thing/sound. Save $5500
I picked up a few reason DVD's, they were pointless in my eyes.

Re: Reason Producer Certificate Program
So am I correct in saying that most, if not all of you, are hobbyist producers who support themselves more fully through an occupation BESIDES producing?

						Re: Reason Producer Certificate Program
i produce professionally... all of what I know I learned by fucking with Reason, too. I barely use it anymore but its where i learned to wire up my actual studio, route and affect audio the way i want, and all my synthesis/sampling skills. All by pressing tab, staring at the back of the rack, and deciding to figure out just how to properly do what i wanted to with the tools.
I'm not saying I'm pro as in I think I'm terrific.. just saying I do it as a job, and i use a lot of different equipment, hard and soft. so nearly every bit of understanding I have of the craft I learned with the virtual rack in Reason (being very visual with the cables etc).
But what i got out of it, i got over spending 5 years or so with the program. I don't think any class is a substitute for that. They might speed up your "breakthrough" moments, but for 5 g's, forget about it.

Re: Reason Producer Certificate Program
Man Full Sail is so expensive, I know a couple people who went there, spent a lot of money, and aren't currently working in the fields they studied. Not to discourage you from doing what you want, just make sure you've explored every avenue before dropping that kind of coin. I personally feel that if you truly love something you'll be so obsessed with mastering it that school or no school you'll end up doing what you love. But I guess some people thrive in the structured environment of school so what the hell do I know, I'm no pro that's for sure, gotta get back to my day job.

Just self teach man.... anything in Reason you can teach to yourself. This isnt heart surgery or rocket science just making music and in reason its even less about learning how to mic/track/record live instrumentaiton so i wouldn spend that cash on a nice prodcution rig instead and be a boss.

definitely better off sinking a few grand into something like a computer if you need to upgrade, Logic for producing real audio mixdowns, maybe a Waves plugin bundle. my 2p anyways

Re: Reason Producer Certificate Program
basically, anything you need to know about reason is in the manual. All the other routing tricks come with originality and insight. Try copying what popular VST's do in reason, stuff like that. I've made a glitcher, a granulizer, a mid-side mastering suite, a de-esser, ...
