That's the thing though. It ISN'T dubstep. For example:
Whenever somethings evolution causes it to deviate so far from its original source, it typically goes on to be called something different. For instance, rock music was created from the fusion of jazz, beach music, and blues. Each of the aforementioned geners contributed some aspects to the formation rock music, but we don't still call rock music "jazz" or "blues" do we? No. It has deviated so far from its source that it needs to be called something of its own. Same thing with dubstep. Brostep should not be considered dubstep because the only constant similarity that doesn't change is the tempo.
I parallel the relation of brostep to dubstep with blues to heavy metal. "Blues" and "heavy metal" are two distinct genres with distinct artist and both terms are widely known and accepted with no grey area as to the difference between them. Whereas many people use the term "dubstep" to refer to the genre in it's entirety. Unfortunately this is very ambiguous because the new sound is so drastically different than the old sound and many new comers to the scene only know of skrillex, excision, etc. Thus, when people hear the word "dubstep" they don't realize what dubstep actually is and what lies beneath the surface of commercialized, watered down, bullshit tunes for the masses.
It's frustrating to see that the newer dubstep has deviated so far from its root sound, but is still referred to as "dubstep." This social decorum regarding dubstep causes a lot of confusion and ambiguity and therefor causes the more original, minimal, deep sound to be overlooked.
Truth...and that's why heads get pissed off from people referring to skrillex or excision or the like as dubstep, because the sound of brostep (simple kick-snare patterns, overdriven midrange with no space, and the goal of making the "filthiest" sounds possible) goes against everything the dubstep scene is about.
Not saying that it should be called brostep, I think that's a rather annoyingly derogatory term, but it can't be called dubstep - because it isn't.
If this is the future, it seems highly livable: shiny, cool and comfortably dissonant. Like a low dose of ketamine in an empty, luminous airport hall in northern Japan, eating avocado and waiting for the universe to arrive.

I understand and i agree with alot of what you said, sad shit that people will continue to listen brostep without listening to original dubstep. But if you thing about it... The something happened with Rock from the 70's and 60's... and the original blues artists that inspired the future artists of Rock music. Dubstep now is not so far from its roots as it was for Blues and lets say Heavy metal. But what about House music, look at the evolution of that! The sub category are allover the place but that all have one common thing... their called "HOUSE"... same way people call broSTEP and dubSTEP... the roots will carry on and might change its name for time to time no matter what people say, but influence will never leave. Yes, i understand that people might never hear the origins of dubstep but haven you seen that old dubstep tracks are gaining more views on youtube as well? Brostep will introduce people into the world of dubstep, and its up to society's mentality to take them back to the roots... because if you never learn the roots, can you really ever grow?
to those into it then we all know for a while there was a halfstep/loefah clones period
tbh though that tune suffers from a lot of the same problems 'deep' tunes made by brostep producers do...it sounds bro without the filth and the drums just cant cut it with less going on to hide how lacking they are in body and depth

Because laptop speakers are shit?

the lead synths are repetitive and obnoxious
the drums are repetitive and boring... nothing but kick on 1 and snare on 3 for the whole fucking song... same with the same hat/shaker rhythm throughout.
the bassline isn't necessarily bad, but it's a bit too quiet in the mix imo and doesn't really "punch"
honestly, it's kind of insulting to compare this to "2005 dubstep" because it was nowhere near this boring and static
Yes!
although i think the sub is really well done.
this is a testament to how difficult it is to make good edm. from a technical standpoint the sub is lovely. but the melody (per se) and drums are shit so its a wash.

interesting comparison with blues and heavy metal. just because it's the same tempo and drumbeat doesn't make the genres the same. it's interesting why dubstep is a genre containing so many types of styles and sounds. it should'nt be that way.. "brostep" or harder types of dubstep should of been called something completely different before it exploded. but also i'm a person which doesn't believe in genres at all. why spend time and energy naming and grouping different types of music?
but overall i think this debate which has been going on on the internet for long now is totally useless. i agree that people should know what dubstep originally is, but why does people always try determine what good and bad music is... why can't people respect other peoples tastes?
on the blues vs metal spectrum, where do Black Sabbath lie???? that's the real question. I say they're a healthy 66% metal, but definitely 100% blues. i know, it makes no sense. or does it....?
the drums really do suck on this by the way, it really pulls a veil off them not having filthy leads cranking out midrange . I know, redundant but its so true.
Here's another really mellow Excsion tune that was released in October. I personally find it to be a killer tune and leagues better than 2005. I really like the more ambient vibe he's been going back to lately.
The oldschool vs newschool /evolution controversy is inevitable. And as long as there such thing as time, it will never end.
It is evident in every other genre and even expands past the realm of music.
But in reality its futile. Surprised not many notice that it is subjective. Meaning your taste or your opinion weighs the same as anyone elses. Yes you might have emotions fueling your fire, but after all the ranting, it is still only worth a penny. Just like everyone else.
Celebrate differences.
Has anyone considered that younger crowds are drawn to brostep because of the glamour/the hype/the chaos/the elements that reflect young raging hormones. Also as we are progressing, attention spans are shortening, we are more capable of multitasking, and technology is allowing us to do more and more gnarly things.
If trueschool dubstep is mature. Be humble like the wellgrounded roots. (not a grump)
And to relate to the topic. I can surely bet that this song would receive much more acclaim and less harsh criticism if we didnt know it was downlink and excision. I appreciate that they stepped in this direction at all. Regardless of the outcome. It is indeed a statement. Id say they are saluting
