SKRILLEX - constructive critiscism only please
READ ALL OF THIS BEFORE YOU POST
I personally like many of the songs that Skrillex has put out, as do I ALSO like more minimal, "pure" dubstep such as Skream, Benga, etc.
Basically, on ALL of these Skrillex songs on youtube, on all of the forums, on EVERYTHING, there's always some dubstep "purist" yelling about how Skrillex "isn't real dubstep," etc.
Okay. First of all, you're right, he isnt that minimal garage style stuff like Skream makes, but please explain how a song like Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites isnt dubstep. 140 bpm? yup. Kick on one, snare on 3? yup. Low register, modulated bassline? Hell yeah. Admittedly, it's a lot more layered and a lot less dark, but that's just evolution. Honestly, it's a lot tougher to create a Skrillex song than a Skream song - I re-made "Filth" by Skream perfectly on Logic in half an hour, I have yet to even get the opening for Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites right. It's fine that you don't like Skrillex, no one's asking you to - but can you please refrain from all of the straight up nasty ad homonym remarks like "ahhhh you're all homophobe. shitty fucking ass music not real dubstep this stupid mainstream long haired homophobe. sucks cock."
THAT DOESNT GET ANYONE ANYWHERE.
Oh, and for the record, Skream and Skrillex are good friends:
quote from a Skream interview: "I love Skrillex. He's my boy."
And don't go after Skrillex's personality either, because he's a really nice guy - REALLY nice. And he's a really hard worker. As far as him TRYING to be mainstream goes, a quote from one of his interviews:
"I would have been happy just making a few 100 bucks a week performing at local clubs. This whole thing just kinda blew up."
And one last thing - so many of you hate on him, but all he has is love for you. He even respects you. Just think about that.

Re: SKRILLEX - constructive critiscism only please
So you think Skrillek is dubstep because you can re-make a Skream song easier than a Skrillek song?

No, but I'm saying you can't bash that "it's so easy to make/formulaic..." there's obviously a lot and time and skill that goes into making that sound. THAT'S what I'm saying.Raggles wrote:So you think Skrillek is dubstep because you can re-make a Skream song easier than a Skrillek song?

I'd rather we could just go about this respectfully, and not have it deteriorate to where it gets lcokedwobbles wrote:this is gonna get locked for sure

i had a chuckle on many levels with that one.Sonika wrote:ad homonym remarks
@sonika, i see your point, but man... who cares? you're not going to change any minds with a thread on DSF. haters gonna hate. let them. there's no such thing as negative publicity. no need to be skrill's advocate.

I said this on another thread and I'll say it here too
That's the thing though. It ISN'T dubstep. For example:
Whenever somethings evolution causes it to deviate so far from its original source, it typically goes on to be called something different. For instance, rock music was created from the fusion of jazz, beach music, and blues. Each of the aforementioned geners contributed some aspects to the formation rock music, but we don't still call rock music "jazz" or "blues" do we? No. It has deviated so far from its source that it needs to be called something of its own. Same thing with dubstep. Brostep should not be considered dubstep because the only constant similarity that doesn't change is the tempo.
I parallel the relation of brostep to dubstep with blues to heavy metal. "Blues" and "heavy metal" are two distinct genres with distinct artist and both terms are widely known and accepted with no grey area as to the difference between them. Whereas many people use the term "dubstep" to refer to the genre in it's entirety. Unfortunately this is very ambiguous because the new sound is so drastically different than the old sound and many new comers to the scene only know of skrillex, excision, etc. Thus, when people hear the word "dubstep" they don't realize what dubstep actually is and what lies beneath the surface of commercialized, watered down, bullshit tunes for the masses.
It's frustrating to see that the newer dubstep has deviated so far from its root sound, but is still referred to as "dubstep." This social decorum regarding dubstep causes a lot of confusion and ambiguity and therefor causes the more original, minimal, deep sound to be overlooked.

Re: SKRILLEX - constructive critiscism only please
dubstep was built on space and weight. A skrillex tune has neither.
Re: SKRILLEX - constructive critiscism only please
maybe he is a talentless wank whoring out a genre and destroying every ounce of culture it once had in the hopes of making as much money as possible for him and his record executive friends who created him

Early Hot Flush, Storming, Destructive, DMZ (B/Mala, that tune is full on), Grime LP's on Rephlex, Army, UG, Fragile Beats...

Re: SKRILLEX - constructive critiscism only please
I don't hate the man himself, and I don't argue that tunes like Scary Monsters are a completely separate genre to dubstep. I don't even hate his tunes, in fact I quite like a few in small doses. What I do hate is the effect he's had on dubstep, or more precisely the world's perception of it.
Look at it this way: whether you're of the opinion that Skrillex makes dubstep or not, you've gotta admit that using him as a prime example of dubstep is straight up wrong. And yet, any time someone asks for an example of dubstep basically anywhere other than DSF, there'll be 20 people pointing to Skrillex for every one person who actually knows the first thing about the genre. Most people on this forum can relate to deliberately avoiding saying they listen to dubstep because of the connotations it carries. Sure, producers like Excision, Datsik and Rusko contributed to this, but Skrillex made it worse than ever.
I'm not saying he made it that way on purpose or anything, but as we all know there's a lot of seriously dumb stnuc in this world. The number of people who think that his electro house tunes like Kill Everybody and Rock N Roll are dubstep is just depressing.
So yeah, that's my criticism. For the record, I think his music is just ok. Some tunes are good, some are awful.
