Re: Finding Inspiration
the best thing to do is just write, who cares if it sounds terrible just make a song. THen youll get the idea. Making a beat first is great but when I get stuck I just take more adderall, lol. But for real just write and get in that zone, who cares if it sounds like another tune, most tunes are copied anyway, just relax and write or if your tense write.
MAKE IT SOUND TERRIBLE IF YOU HAVE TO thats the point to get you mind moving, if you think its terrible thats good, your having a reaction, thats where breakthroughs happen. Do you know how many times I didnt want to write because I feel inferior to Eskmo who used to be a very good friend of mine. Now hes touring the world. So I ask myself who the hell am I to write Im to old too poor too this or that. Its all bullshit, just write, im gonna be coming up on my 10th dubstep tune and I dont wanna stop for no one.

Re: Finding inspiration and getting started
The simple act of producing alone usually inspires me enough, but there are certain moments where I can't muster up enough inspiration, or there is too much I want to do that I simply get overloaded.
Sometimes inspiration hits me just looking at random ass video clips on Youtube or something... I'll be like "Oh shit I wanna cut that into a track" and just get the fuck to work you know.
^ this is actually a really good idea, keep you focused on one idea.accordionfan wrote:i dont know if it will work for you but. smoke weed. just a little bit.
when i don't smoke i have sooo many ideas flying around in my head when i sit down i am horrified, and change my mind every six minutes. take a puff or two, i can actually focus on sounds that i want >: D
i dont know if this is good advice but it works for me

Re: Finding Inspiration
If you have a smartphone record some sounds.
I think iPhones can do it natively, but I've got an android phone - there is an app called 'rehearsal assistant' that is free & can record wav files if you choose in the options.
Its good because all your samples have the 'telephone eq' sound to them & not much low end - so you can use them for percs & ambient/folly sounds (plus you normally have it with you - it makes you start thinking about sounds...). Recording loud hits smashes the input gains easily & you can layer these sounds over/into drums.
Or go down the 2nd hand shop & look for a mic. My mate got one for 1 pound

Re: Finding Inspiration
it helps me to have a plan going into it..
I always:
Pick a key/mode
set up a drum loop for 4-8 bars
put a bass patch together
and go from there, those are the building blocks and everything else should fall into place

Re: Finding Inspiration
I was so damn sad a moment ago and wrote the best bassline and chord progression ever.
Violins and purple bass.
I feel much better.

After this post I tried out a couple suggestions and am currently working on a song that I'm really excited about
Cheers
