it is pointless trying to discuss tho; seems screaming tantrums that "it isnt art" trumps all. Why does it get you so riled Mark?
Also, for those that know about sampling noise, and creating noise, will also know it's actually an important part of Dubstep, Drum and Bass, Punk, Metal and lots of other genres. There is a world outside the box, even if you can't see it.

I don't think there are many people who have bashed the artistic integrity of brostep, not on this forum (not speaking for every brostep comment, just from what I've seen). The problem with brostep is it being labeled as Dubstep and removing the image of what Dubstep actually is. A lot of people hated what it was doing to the scene and didn't enjoy it. Plus the fact that every wanabee was running round after Datsik and Skrillex basslines, or the random joes on the street saying they love Dubstep and when you ask them what artists they listen to they say "Datsik".-[2]DAY_- wrote:sure, its art

Someone saying "Brostep is shit" is not saying "Skrillex is not talented and artistic".
You don't have to like something to appreciate its artistic value.

Personally, theres some brostep I can listen to. Some I can't. But, there is a large amount of skill that goes into producing the good brostep. But even the stuff I don't like I give them credit and it is artistic. Whats that genre where the tempo is like 300bpm. I can't stand it. I don't even understand how people listen to it. Complete shite. But, it is still artistic.
This threads got a little off topic. This topic should really appeal to the brostep producers (may do lurk and post here), and anyone that likes experimenting with noise. But, even they may fail to see the documantry as useful.
Not knocking your comment, your comment was actually good. At least you appreciated it as artistic even though don't enjoy it.

i really appreciate those folks who push the boundaries of the medium... i wouldn't say i'm in any place to judge the artistic merit of it, of course that's very subjective..
I wouldn't listen to it.. I doubt it appeals much to the brodeo clowns either because they're mostly just interested in neon colors, drugs and bitches.. the types of sounds that are highly organized, they might be complex sounds but are placed over a dumb-simple beat that takes no thought to consume.
This other noise stuff, its like... ok, i hate the sound of that guys stuff, but if they keep doing what they're doing, they could discover new beneficial ways to make it, listen to it, use it... its avant-garde.
still, though, theres something an old teacher of mine used to say about the avant-garde free jazz players, which was essentially "yes, their efforts have yielded some new and exciting ideas in music, but just ask one of 'em to play the same licks twice."
point being, for myself and many others, the idea of creating art almost has more to do with intent than it does with results. The only wrong notes are the ones you didn't mean to play.. you could be breaking all the rules, but if you conceived the musical passage in your mind and executed it with purpose, that's art.
i doubt any of these dudes could record three takes of the same piece, and you'd be able to recognize it.

Watching this now but not sure if I have the attention span for it. I like how much discussion it spawned.
Some noise is good, most isn't. Much like any other type of music or anything for that matter. So meh.
So far, though, they seem to mostly be sticking to like the more..... philosophical noise musicians. Not really putting much focus on punk side of things (from what I've seen). That's too bad, rly. When I started getting into noise it was all because of the noisecore stuff.
And no footage from Japan?
Anyway, think about it whatever you want, it's really fun to make.

I definitely see a "punk" side to some of it, much like black metal. Like the one guy said about how it's supposed to sound crappy/dirty. When I experiment with noise, I usually go towards the aggressive/screechy style. I like to overdrive things with an EQ in the 1k-4kHz area where your ears are most sensitive, getting pretty much the loudest sounds I can. Of course when I'm listening to stuff like Merzbow or Masonna I have the volume down so I don't get a headache. Some of it is just interesting because of how they work the sounds. I listen and wonder "How the hell did they make THAT sound?"

It's good music for catharsis too.
And some of it just makes for a nice creepy dissonant ambience.
I liked the part where the guy talked about having a synth that will just keep changing sounds without any human input. I've tried that before, just having super slow lfo's at different speeds, with prime numbers, and trying to make something that won't be repetitive for a long time.

Its an oscillator with some controls - whats the point? Any semi modular soft synth could do these sounds.

Yes i do speak my mind, and speak the truth. I don't know which doa topic you mean but i do have disagreements with people, true.
As far as hardware synths go, i'm looking at getting one myself, probably a virus. I'm fully aware of the fun you can have with hardware, just this box doesn't seem too impressive. That was all i'm saying.
And again, if you'd like to say whats so great about it vs a softsynth+midi controller, i'm all ears.

- This is more interesting to look at. I've just taken it out the pack and put the batteries in to give it a trial run before I leave the office, and I've had my whole team gathered round having a mess around with it. If I'd loaded up FL and got a copy of Massive going, I'm going to hazard a guess that it wouldn't have gotten the same reaction.
- This is more portable. It runs off batteries, and fits in the palm of my hand. At a pinch, I can sling it in a pocket when I go round a mate's house for a production session, or easily rig it up to run through my DJ mixer. Can't do that with a softsynth (unless I was running a laptop setup, which I'm not)
- I don't know know anyone else who has one of these, so it's got niche value to me.
- It's more fun.
