Dubstep Begginer, wanting to know tips and hints on mixing

Post by pugz888 » Sun Nov 20, 2011 11:48 am

Hello All,
so basically i started this feed trying to promote a mix i have done, with very little experience, software and all round knowledge.
as you can expect i got quite a lot of hate for it. and couldn't take the criticism at first.
But all your opinions have been helpful !!..
So i now want to know what software and equipment people use
and just all-round opinions on certain styles of so called dubstep.
cheers

ill give you some advice.

A. dont post a mix in the general section, there is a mix section for it.
B. its great your new to this, but people like me who arent, dont care to here your new fascination with midrange jump up. Flux, skirllex, and such.
C. dont post your mix on youtube, its the shittiest medium for someone to listen to a mix. people wont say " i want to listen to a mix, let me go find one on youtube" try soundcloud, mixcloud.
D. virtual DJ software is almost insulting to the art, if your going to go digital at least use real software, and buy a controller.
E. sorry to be totally a downer, just giving you my 3cents.

Valid points !!...
just jumped into a little fast.
can't blame me, from what i knew i thought for the software and equipment i had it was a half decent effort.
everyone has been at my point at one stage.

You will no doubt get torn to shreds by everyone else for song choice and Ill be honest and say I skipped through to when the songs mix and well they dont flow atall scatta to hold on was just bizarre for example. Then again Ive only dabbled in mixing using software so Im just saying as a listener of music!
I never had any trouble with soundcloud either and if someone actually did like it they could actually get ahold of it.

I'm just experimenting man, only just started, very limited equipment. shouldn't of really posted it expecting much i know, just feel that people criticise so much, its my first mix, and i think its a half decent effort, it isn't going to be a masterpiece and isn't all going to work, and I'm sick of people hating on so called "commercial dubstep", I've only got into dubstep in the past like 18 months, so its all i really know, and i like it, and so do thousands of other people.

There's plenty of people here who like mainstream dubstep. Magnetic Man for example, or some of Breakage and Distance's more poppy stuff. Hell, I love Katy B, figure that one out.
Mainstream dubstep:

Shit dubstep:

And how are you gonna call Edgecom a dick for giving you pretty much spot-on feedback? All his points were completely valid. If all you wanted was a bunch of yes men, perhaps show it to your high-school mates?

I don't know why everyone expects this guy to be good at mixing if they are using VDJ, and a mouse for their mix.

Mate, in all fairness you can go a party and play for your friends, and as long as you play what they like, you will not get any flack from them. When you post on the interent though people are usually listening to it sober, hence all the crap your gonna get.

As far as Skrillex and Flux Pavillion go, most people on here hate them because they are pushing the sound in the opposite direction it was built on. Dubstep was make for smaller clubs with massive sound systems. It was built on sub bass, bass and more bass. You would go to a night and be able to skank, smoke a joint and meditate on bassweight. Flux and Skrillex on the other hand are in it for the money. They are pushing mid range robot noises at 140 BPM and calling it dubstep. They want to see kids rolling on mdma, and moshing. They are using the name dubstep to push their own sound, and are confusing the masses. Thats why they get so much flack here. I am not putting all of the blame on Skrillex and Flux, but they certainly do contribute to it, hence the hate towards them.

Okay let me just put this straight before it gets out of hand, I've only just started mixing, so of cause its not gonna be brilliant, i have little to no equipment and virtual dj. my mates that i showed it too liked it, so i got a little ahead of my game and posted it and shit.
So all i really want are some tips on what software to use, controllers etc.
And just some general tips on mixing ??.
