Skanks: very specific type of sound

Post by mgpg89 » Fri Nov 25, 2011 9:10 am

Already asked a couple of people how to produce some sweet skanks, and they always reply: organ + reverb (or guitar upstroke + reverb)

But the sound of skank I'm really after is this one:

It's more of a synthetic sound than the classic reggae skanks. Anyone care to elaborate how to accomplish this type of sound ?

Cheers

Use a synth instead, play chords. Just sounds like a chord being played on a pulse wave.

When your placing the midi notes think of how a guitarist plays. The notes wont start at the same time theres a slight delay between each note when the guitarist strums. Little things like this make all the difference.

any kind of off time stab will give you that vibe. You can use synths or real instruments, tape delay, organ sounds etc. and nudge a few of the hits in random ways to give it a bit of a swing, or record it yourself. Don't over think it :)

Try some simple oscilators saw or square type and distort a litte bit or/and detune combined with (spring)reverb and (tape)delay.

I haven't listened to the clip, but a lot of old reggae and dub got the skank sound by having both organ and guitar playing the chords...

I did wonder about that, I presumed it was one of those sampled intros before the dentist drill is initialised.
