Re: End of year ninja music charts
hm.
i think for me it makes more sense to do a personal top 5 of my own tunes - some self-reflexion. + i'm sure to miss out a lot if i take all releases that stood out in 2011.
1- phrex - species
2- phrex & cutkachi - dangerous
3- nicolas jaar - keep me there (phrex remix)
4- phrex - #6
5- phrex - enter the experience

My top ten from 2011 are quite random but here we go
1.SBTRKT-SBTRKT
2.Zomby-Dedication
3.Modeselektor-Monkeytown
4.James Blake-James Blake
5.Does It Offend You Yeah?- Don't Say We Didn't Warn You
6.Mellowhype-BlackenedWhite
7.Beastie Boys-Hot Sauce Committee Pt 2
8.PInch & Shackleton-Pinch & Shackleton
9.Joker-The Vision
10.Boddika-2727 E.P
Could still change before the end of the year though, PInch and Shackleton could definitely move further up the chart and the Nothing E.P by Zomby could move in

Re: End of year ninja music charts
On the non-electronic front I really liked St. Vincent
And then we have the holy trinity of Rustie, Zomby and Sully.
And stuff that came out in 2010 which I only heard/got into this year would be Forest Swords and Born Ruffians and the Avey Tare solo album.
Struggle with these lists.

It's fucking mental how many good tunes have been released this year, there's a stupid amount I'm missing out on but these were the ones that sprung to mind

Re: End of year ninja music charts
I'm not going to list anything that's remotely related to the forum content. You can check my blog for thoughts on the best 'UK bass' albums of 2011. The link is in my signature. Received some good critics for the list but also, yes I agree: Author and FaltyDL should at least have made the list.
Any how, what other music did I enjoy this year?
Andy Stott
Wow, two short albums out this year (combine to form one big one)." Passed Me By" / "We Stay Together" are deffo some of the highlights of the year for me, especially within techno.
DeepChord
Another one that really had a great year. "Hash-Bar Loops" is amazing. And he's done plenty of awesome remixes as well.
Sort of within the same corner of music, there were excellent releases fromThe Field("Looping State of Mind"), Pole (waldgeschichten), Alan FitzPatrick (Insurgent series), Biodub (Reisgefaehrte), and of course, Brittish Duo Emptyset with their amazing second album "Demiurge".
Which brings us slowly into the domain of ambient music, where there were good releases by several people.
Tim Hecker has to be mentioned first for the incredible "Ravedeath, 1972", but Fennesz (Seven Stars) and the dark drones of Mika Vainio ("Life, it Eats You Up").
Let's also not forget the Tri Angle label who really didn't put out much bad, with Balam Acab, Holy Other and not in the least of all, Clams Casino.
Furthermore, Ekoplekz and Sasha Rydell also deserve a mention. That's all I can think of at the moment

Can't believe I forgot about this.joeki wrote: Tim Hecker
Also, I need to give it some more listens but Sandwell District - Feed Forward might make its way onto this list.
Same goes for the new Oneohtrix Point Never - need to listen more. Last album was life changing and, while it is quite difficult music at times, want to give this one some more time.
That's my problem with these lists: I can only make up my mind about whether I really love an album after I've lived with it for at least a year.
Re: End of year ninja music charts
true that! And I can't believe I forgot "Afterime" by Roly Porter

self reflection isn't necessarily arrogant- but you do that by your 'self' rather than telling others. this thread is to give people the chance to big up other people and spread their love for music, not promote themselves and say what the best things they have done are...almost the definition of arrogance thinking about yourself rather than others. if you saw an interview with an actor asked what their favorite films of the year are and them saying - it makes more sense to tell you the favorite films I've been in it would seem a bit self indulgent and arrogant (even more so for tunes that are just you- at least a film takes a whole big team of people).
but whatever, I don't want to be a tnuc and make a big deal about it, just a passing comment

Oh man, totally forgot about Shackleton - Deadman
EVERYBODY STARTS FROM POINT ONE has been burned in to the back of my brain for some time now.
Aaaargh, so much good music been released this year. Would I be wrong on saying this has been the best year ever for bass music?
