Good Quality Portable field recorders

After reading the Burial sample thread, I've been thinking about getting a field reorder.
I've been thinking about getting a field reorder.
Does anyone have recommendations? I can't spend more than £200

I've decided I want a hard disk recorder without a built in mic. I'd much rather have agood quality mic seperately. And I could always get one of these 'jimmys' to hold it.


I've tried the Marantz PMD 660 at Uni and find it awful as there's a lot of hiss.

I like the idea of Stealth microphones, (they look like a pair of headphones) but actually have 2 mono mics, so you get excellent human-like stereo seperation and you have the benefit of not having to carry anything in your hand, and looking inconspicuous which might be good if you're trying to record people's natural convesations.

Anyone tried the M-Audio MICROTRACK 24/96?

april's adition of FutureMusic includes 'The Definitive Guide to Recording in the Field' which has some useful tips and reviews. The Edirol R-09, which is perhaps a little above your budget at £299, has FutureMusic's value award though the 'editor's choice' is the Korg MR-1, but at £499 thats way above your budget. It might be better going for one of the above though since you can probably get away with not buying a separate mic, something that wouldnt be so easy with a cheaper model.
