@fractal: I took very careful notice of what you said --" build into a drop, instead of just having a small build up to a drop"-- when listening to the kode9 track. In this instance, I agree with you, Kode9 manages to keep it very interesting by almost blending the drop and the intro. As for Loefah? His production can't be questioned in my eyes, so nothing to say there.
I've realized its more so about the context of the song. I feel like recently, the tunes being produced (especially dungeon) are 32 bars of boring and repetitive patterns of the same exact thing, and then the drop. The repetitiveness of the build-up causes them to do the exact opposite of their intended purpose and all of the suspense and excitement could have easily been accomplished in a 30 second period for these songs. Instead of raising suspense and excitement, they denounce it.
However, I can also see how songs like that Kode9 track you posted, and DJG - NYC, can really shape and take form due to a well structured build-up, so it's all relative to the nature of the song and build up.

^ for sure, but i wouldn't discount the tunes that just drop after a few bars or measures, the effect of that is dope too if its done well

I think some producers are stuck in a formula of 32/16 bar intros, this has lead to a lack of creativity and loads of really simple build ups, which weakens the drop imo. *looks at ukf*
More long intros like this please.
