Skrillex, Zomboy, Filthzilla etc. Snares

Post by Dub Scout » Fri Dec 16, 2011 2:12 am

I've been noticing this a lot recently - first it started with skrillex, but now it seems the producers such as zomboy, break the noize and filthzilla all are getting this punchy, "pitched" snare sound. it's really bugging me.

the closest ive been able to come is on this track : Soundcloud (i did the snares for this one)

i think they sound ok, but i cant seem to get that punch, followed a lot of advice in terms of eqing and all that but methinks i just don't have the right sample.

Could anyone help me out?

Oh, and @OP, mess with the envelope on the snare sample. Make the transient a lot louder than the rest of the snare and also make sure the snare's duration isn't so long...make it a quick snappy thing.

Yea honestly it's just about layering your snares and picking the frequencys to blend together, I like to use some vengeance stuff as well as some stuff from BHK, he's got some nice snares in some of his packs as well, I usually almost always layer in a 909 and it seems to give me that punch. Really comes down to creatively using several samples together as one. imo taking your time to build a nice kit always pays off...... edit: not really seeing anything special in koans snares :o

EDIT: POLISH THEM TURDZZZZZZ

Use snappy clap and a punchy snare sample in layers until you have a pretty good source sample.

then Its all about a super compressed 200hz punch man try an EQ / Comp / EQ until desired sound is achieved.

Those were the days.

I also remember a just a few weeks ago, when he was trying to DJ with his decks not plugged in. He really has come a long way in such little time...

Wires? He's progressed beyond wires, he calculates the frequency of each wobble so that the vibrations mean the turntable speed is sustained!

All you people trying to sound like him, I'd just give up tbh, he's one of a kind.

He's not usually one for hippy statements but there's no other way to describe it... dubstep defines him.

I heard that he talks all 437 yoi based languages, and his breaths are what power all the midrange/treble woofers in the world.

It's news to me that he's actually known. I thought he was just a commoner.

But guys cut him some slack. Dan seems nice and his tunes are pretty decent

I thought Koan's snares were pretty much the same as skrillex's? Except for that one where its a metallic ringy sound instead of the "distorted at 200Hz square attack" snare.
I really like the snares in this song.
