Dimension Expander On Sub Bass (Massive)?
Ok Ive kinda been wondering this for a while but is the dimension expander a type of stereo widening? or maybe a werid type of reverb or something. I read somewhere a while back that any sort of stereo widening on the bass or kick is not good for the mix and absolutley terrible for the mastering stage is there any truth to that or is it just internet garble
. But it does sound quite nice on the sub in a very low quantity (more makes the mix quite foggy).

If the sound is what your after then go for it, but from personal experience and what I have gathered, it's that the bass shouldn't have any panning and should be mono.

anything in this thread could just be internet garble
Re: Dimension Expander On Sub Bass (Massive)?
the dimension expander is some sort of reverb, so no don't put it on your sub.
it's not even because of the mastering stage, it's just that most speaker systems have mono subwoofers and if you sum a reverbed stereo signal to mono it's just gonna phase in and out so your sub will be inaudible at times.
if you have an X.1 system at home you can try it out yourself

Definitely leave it off of anything under 150hz. I would imagine it to be useful on midrange though. It's Mike Daliot's version of Roland's Dimension D; a fairly unique sounding chorus/spatial expander from the late '80s. It's essentially a four voice chorus with extended delay times and with two out of the four voices being out of phase with the other two.

sounds like a bad idea i personally wouldnt put on a dimension expander, its like a reverb but like a delay as well with widening.. its not going to sound nice or maybe even your sub will quieten or disappear (on some systems) if you widen it.
also the human ear can not judge stereo imaging too well with low frequencies like that so its probably not going to sound as nice to other people.

Re: Dimension Expander On Sub Bass (Massive)?
it's a short, chorused verb-- actually a really handy verb, wish i had a plug that just did that without the rest of massive
if you like it on bass, awesome. might be easier to mix if you make your sound mono afterwards, but if it sounds good, do it.

I know when i used to use z3ta it had a feature that you could use the fx seperatley on the audio effects plug-in rack and I've been wishing resently that massive had the same feature i was even considering sending them and email on the subjectSharmaji wrote:it's a short, chorused verb-- actually a really handy verb, wish i had a plug that just did that without the rest of massive

Thats a good tip also about converting to mono after. It could work for some sounds quite nicely

sharmaji have you not tried dub-expander? its free and similar, not 100% the same but yeah thats the closest sounding FX plugin i know to the dimension expanderSharmaji wrote:it's a short, chorused verb-- actually a really handy verb, wish i had a plug that just did that without the rest of massive

generally putting reverb on bass is bad. BUT if it sounds good then do it, then check your mix in mono. if it falls apart then you've probably got too much effect.

Yes i agree, But lately ive been checking out some synth presets from top dubstep producers just so i could try to figure out what techniques they are using.VirtualMark wrote:generally putting reverb on bass is bad. I've found that alot of them use reverb on the mid and high bass not much but just to taste. I dont really like the sound of this unless its very moderated, but it can work on these sounds and converting to mono after clarifiys why they sound the way they do after the mixing stage. So thanks you've given me a brainstorm

Re: Dimension Expander On Sub Bass (Massive)?
Definitely don't use it. It's a nice sounding effect but unfortunately you can't specify which oscillators to apply it to - if you're working with a dedicated sub patch though, you could always just throw the dimension expander on the top bass. But you definitely don't want to be feeding your sub through any stereo or reverb effects, as it causes headaches later on. (almost had this issue on one of my tunes slip past both me AND my mastering engineer once - I had accidentally sent the sub to a channel with a stereo widener on it, and neither me nor the mastering engineer noticed it until I scoped my mix on headphones. not good!)

Don't know how that Massive effects works, but sounds like you could achieve similar results with überMod...possibly? http://www.valhalladsp.com/valhallaubermodSharmaji wrote:it's a short, chorused verb-- actually a really handy verb, wish i had a plug that just did that without the rest of massive![]()
Re: Dimension Expander On Sub Bass (Massive)?
i think you guys are all wrong to be honest. I get similar results like this:
double the sound in two, pan one version left, and pan the second one right, while you delay the sound about 10 ms. Also known as the haas effect. It sounds exactly like the dimension expander. Maybe add some reverb, whatever.
