cymbals a la nero, knife party and skrillex
I love the cymbals on these tracks
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMQTPHScs1M
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZMfhtKa-wo
so, ive tried to get this sound. i can tell a lot of mids are scooped out and the hi's really cut through. i still cant get my cymbals to sit like these though.
does anyone have any idea how to get this sound? any tips?
does anyone know if theres a kontakt patch with a full sampled acoustic kit that has great shimmery samples like these? something like bfd or superior drummer?
does anyone have any shimmery cymbals to share? thanks

I often wonder about this. As for the technicalities of it... I couldn't tell you.
It's one of the things that metal fans dig about skrilley though, those big smashy cymbals on every beat. Try looking up metal/rock mixing. May give you some insight.

Super experimental.

I have a thread here discussing the track, and offering you the chance to remix it, more details in thread! See what you can come up with!

Re: cymbals a la nero, knife party and skrillex
I believe it as all about transient shaping and compression. I do not have a powerful grasp on transient shaping but I would certainly say try using a compressor with a long attack to compress the tail and decaying part of the cymbals
Re: cymbals a la nero, knife party and skrillex
heavy distorted ny compression to the max baby
Re: cymbals a la nero, knife party and skrillex
Addictive drum =)
Re: cymbals a la nero, knife party and skrillex
that shit to me is mixed like a 90s rock mixdown...
andy wallace type mix... where whole parts (like lead, ryhtm, drum) will duck other parts...
i feel the cymbal part is like a huge chunk, or a sample, they wont mix it inside the beat... they'll drop it over and drop something down while it plays.. as everything in their uberly squashed mixes fights for the same space...
its a different philosophy on mixing.. one i like, but not all the time...
try to get the cymbal part to duck something else in the song.. like reverb on vocals, or pads...

get the shaack transient shaper!!! By far the most useful tool for me in terms of mixing drums, so easy to use and learn, its good for mixing pretty much everything else as well. (you can get free versions of this with a quick google)
Re: cymbals a la nero, knife party and skrillex
Oh and in terms of shimmering cymbals, just turn the release up, attack down and the drive up a little

Re: cymbals a la nero, knife party and skrillex
good samples...or maybe they use Addictive drums ....but its acctually some distortion and compression with tons of reverb but the sample is the main thing
Re: cymbals a la nero, knife party and skrillex
Andy Wallace actually uses a lot more quick fader riding than compression if you are looking to duck like he does. People say they are very surprised by how little compression he uses.

It's gone beyond a joke in this place recently. How do I do Skrilly? (fucking nicknaming an already pathetic sounding pseudonym) followed by the wankest of youtube links, I think the age demographic of this forum these days is probably about 12.hasezwei wrote:you all watched that youtube link and none of you disliked it. you disappoint me more and more every time i log in, production forum...

Something is seriously wrong.

Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.
