CHEAT LIKE HELL in music theory

Post by RandoRando » Tue Dec 20, 2011 8:29 am

Applied to any DAW, cant beleive i never though of this, im probably gonna get flamed cause its not real music theory or whatever, its just cool for making seperate melodies.
ALSO you see how he cuts through the notes like butter with the Slice tool in FLs piano roll, how do i slice easily like that in ABLETONS piano roll?

HOLY SHIT! That's so awesome. I use Ableton as well, I guess it can still be applied. I've found what I'm going to be spending my time doing tonight!

Well no, there's not. Not that I know of anyway. I tried it then, it's a bit more time consuming than slicing, you basically cut and place clips in the zig-zagged fashion like the guy did in the tutorial. :)

This feature alone makes me wish I used FL and not Ableton hah! As much as I love Ableton, FL just look's so much easier for programming that that.

eh, one of the only things FL has on ableton really..

this is coming from a FL user of 6 years and ableton user of 2-3 hours lol .

HAHAHA!!! WOW, that's an awesome tutorial. Don't know if I'll ever make hay with it, but it'll be worth a few hours experimentation! Thanks for posting that.

you can't use this VERY technique in ableton, but consider what he did. Simple manipulations of the chord progression. It may very well be created with CTRL + clicking in ableton. Copy copy notes.

you can do something very similar to this in ableton. duplicate your chords like he does and then click fold on the piano roll, so only those chords are showing. create a new midi channel and set its midi input from the channel with the chords on it, and record arm that track. click a circle on one of those clip slots and go back to the channel with the chords on it. on that channel select the headphone circle at the top left. delete all the notes in that track. create a new note and slowly drag it up and down the piano roll. all of these flourishes will be recorded in the other channel. :4:

Wait so "fold" will disable any notes that aren't being used?

So I can make a chord at a high octave, highlight all of them then shift+ctrl+down arrow about 5 times , click fold, delete all those notes, then drag one midi note up and down the folded piano roll which is sending audio to blank audio track.

tried this method, its interesting but its not anything id ever rely on since the technique is limited. can get nice & more preferable melodies by sitting there for longer and bashing around on the keyboard. this is good for quick little solo bits but i would never rely on this method for anything else.
the Riff Machine and Randomise (Ctrl + R) functions in FL can sometimes make good stuff, which is another interesting cheat. set your chords and ranges and it will make melodies and there's a wide selection of chords & scales to choose. again i dont rely on this method either but it is quite fun sometimes.

fold hides notes that arent being used. the way i have described it you are sending midi notes to the blank track, but of course the same could be done with audio

Yeah. also if you do this on a synth with legato and you have a laptop, you can emulate a kaossilator by making sweeping motions an your track pad

The difficult part is not really creating variety though, the difficult part is laying out that
basic chord progression. At least that's the case for me.
