Re: jesus fucking christ
I've actually hung out with him a few times before and after shows and watched a number of his sets.
What he does mostly is uses his 909 in obscure fashions for effects. Around the 59 minute mark in this video you can hear him queuing up the 909 at twice the bpm and doing a 'drill' effect. And what he'll do is have the 909 assigned to a channel and he'll use the channel assign to kinda flip back and fourth to add his own effects in.
Or he'll add in his own cymbal line in on another tune that may not have a prominent one.
Also seen him beat match his 909 to a tune and let the 909 run its self for a few bars and mix back into the 909

Re: jesus fucking christ
he does it in a unique way.... a lot of what he's doing is just adding in precussion and cymbals so he's more accenting a song... where as most of the people I've seen doing this 'style' go straight for adding in their own leads or pads over minimal tunes... which ultimately takes them out of the minimal category.Helix [Delay] wrote:aka dex n fxpkay wrote:I've actually hung out with him a few times before and after shows and watched a number of his sets.

He's more accenting the tunes and staying with the original vibe than completely changing the tune like some folk do.
Re: jesus fucking christ
yeah thats why i said it, he's doin some mad shit on the decks, helps to hear the parts he's playing around with by seeing what he's doingHelix [Delay] wrote:lol this is one of the few times where I agree that watching the DJ is coolnoam wrote:would be so much better if they had a focus view of what he's doing on the decks

I used to keep a 4x4 clap loop constantly running on the 3rd channel in traktor so I could just bring it in and out whenever I wantedpkay wrote:he does it in a unique way.... a lot of what he's doing is just adding in precussion and cymbals so he's more accenting a song... where as most of the people I've seen doing this 'style' go straight for adding in their own leads or pads over minimal tunes... which ultimately takes them out of the minimal category.Helix [Delay] wrote:aka dex n fxpkay wrote:I've actually hung out with him a few times before and after shows and watched a number of his sets.

Agreed. I just listened to it last night myself. Jeff Mills was fucking shit up all the way back to the mid '80's. I love the electro meets hip-hop vibe of that mix.
Re: jesus fucking christ
great skills & show
but ultimately
too fast, overly percussive at expense of bass,
rythmically boring & ochlophobia-inducing.
