fair enough, I guess some people misbehaved in that thread, which in all honesty though, was created under quite ridiculous pretences if you ask me. Hence the scepticism (and irony) found in some peoples reply.

Producers makes tunes > producers asks for advice on what labels to send tunes to.joeki wrote:that thread, which in all honesty though, was created under quite ridiculous pretences if you ask me.
What part of that do you think is ridiculous?

I guess I'm the only one who sees the problem with that 'way of working'. I guess I've always been quite the ethicist.

Re: Brostep / Skrillex and the Forum.
Do I really need to state the obvious here? If I do, I'm affraid I WILL come off as a condescending twat. Pete was onto something there.
First Pete I know you know this, but 5 years ago, you didn't have a choice but to come here if you had questions about dubstep. This (or its predecessor) were basically the only hubs for Dubstep on the internet. It was a new and fresh genre and people were doing things independently all over the country and world. With the evolutions that have taken place over the internet since then, I think its needless to say, times have changed. If you've been listening to a genre for any decent amount of time, I would think you'd have an incline about who's who and what's what. Granted, some are in isolation.
But it's my understanding that people are too busy trying to 'get big' these days with mediocre tunes. And labels are indulging them, which is why you have to dig through 3 pages of shit on junodownload before you can find any tune worth downloading. And this is of course not limited to brostep! It is not limited to dubstep either!
I'm also not convinced about the way this whole system works, producers pushing tunes onto labels (though in this case, I question whether it isn't a case of producer pushing music onto other people outside of the music/production forum to get notice). If you make music for yourself and it is any good, it will get noticed. People shouldn't start producing music expecting to make a living out of it. This is what ruined 50% or more of music. Don't take my word for it, Steve Albini for one agrees. (check out the docu "100% DIY, Vinyl in the 21st century").
I guess my point is, people don't look further than their noses are long any more and expect everything but aren't willing to give everything. There's no discovery any more. There's no experience any more outside of the listening.

Re: Brostep / Skrillex and the Forum.
But Discogs is available to everyone who has the net. In honesty, that was probably the best link he could have been given. As then he could have found out what labels those artists he likes release on and go from there. Not as good as going to nights but like you say not everyone can.pete bubonic wrote:If I were going to read deeper into it, I would say it's the idea, that the guy is so distant from the sound that he doesn't know the labels he should approach. And perhaps going to the related nights, or getting involved in a more grass roots level might be the best approach. Which I can agree with a bit. I'm sure if 9 out of 10 demo submissions I get had done the smallest amount of research into Soul motive they wouldn't send the demo in the first place.wub wrote:joeki wrote:I guess I'm the only one who sees the problem with that 'way of working'. Contrary, if someone is from an isolated spot, young or just not into clubs, then it can be hard to make those links.
I think I'm having a conversation with myself.

Point is though, you didn't have to give your opinion on his tunes, or ridicule him, or be patronising.joeki wrote:Do I really need to state the obvious here? If I do, I'm affraid I WILL come off as a condescending twat. Pete was onto something there.

He was asking for help with labels, albeit slightly naively.
if you don't like his tunes, or even that, kind of music, turn a blind eye. Dont just gun down a guy who has spent ages on something and was asking for help.

Re: Brostep / Skrillex and the Forum.
^^ that's also a valid point of course. I often realise I can be a bit of a drama queen on here, going on about ethics and values. But that doesn't mean anything if you aren't having fun or an enjoyable time with it. And I can understand that some people might not have a good time on here.
I guess we all need to make some more effort in these testing times, regardless of preference, age or outlook on the music business.

Re: Brostep / Skrillex and the Forum.
I'm only 13, but I'd really like to "get big" or in the very least make a living off of music. I like old dubstep and new dubstep, but honestly by the time I'm old enough to actually give my songs to a label, it'll probably be something else thats all the rage.
Point is, I dont think just making music you love will necessarily get you noticed. From my understanding, you really have to push it on people, and even then it may not be the new fresh thing, and could amount to nothing.
I try to make lots of different types of music, and I would never try to make a song that I didn't like just so I could get signed/get big. This attitude may end up with me NOT getting signed, at which point, fuck it I'll try to make a living off of DJing and make music in my free time.
Anyways what I am saying is that the whole idea that "if you make music you love you'll get noticed" is false, IMO.

Re: Brostep / Skrillex and the Forum.
if you're making music to get signed, you're usually going to compromise one way or the other. And there's a difference between feeding of artists and just plain copying them. But, that's just my opinion. I've always considered getting signed a bonus rather than a goal. At the moment I'm simply not good enough yet and I don't feel the need to share my productions. My soundcloud is in my sig yeah, but I've never forced any one to listen to it or shared the music. I'm just not talented enough and if that is the case, you need to practice and read and try, for which I do not have enough time or energy at the moment (but my day will come).
When It gets to the point I made something I'm extremely happy with. I might not even post it and just keep it to myself. A therapy thing you know. Having said that, I don't think you should be banned from making a living of music, what I am saying is artists that do so and don't compromise are so rare, they are usually some of those musical geniuses that have walked the earth.
