this is a really great tutorial! it applies to all things, not just music....well thought out and put together - i think the human mind is very susceptible to distractions to begin with, and the over-saturation of media and just generally STUFF in our life is sometimes overwhelming. This is definitely changing how I go about things - I may go about life differently after hearing your ideas. Great vid!

Really feeling your message man. You speak truth. I've been in to meditation for years but haven't been practising it recently. You've inspired me to pick it up again. And yeh dam, it makes so much sense to use it as a prerequisite to studio time focus.

I hardly ever watch TV either and only really watch docus/arty/intellectual films and I agree with everything you're saying about the state of affairs in the modern western world.

In an odd kinda way you seem to remind me of me lol. Big ups man, fully.

interesting video. i have to point out that your views on adhd are a bit wrong, i have adhd and know a lot about it. its caused by a shortage of dopamine in the brain, which is why i'm currently prescribed concerta(ritalin xr), which is a dopamine reuptake inhibitor and does help with focus.

but believe me, everyone does not have adhd, and it gets annoying when people think they do just because they sometimes lose focus. its normal to lose focus sometimes, but its not normal to do it all of the time and never finish anything in life.

definitely agree on the theory about modern life tho. i've often wondered if modern society is causing short attention spans. 1000 years ago there was literally nothing to do. maybe read a book by candlelight in the evening. now we have tv, internet, computer games, phones etc and are bombarded with information every second.

i used to play xbox loads, i sold it, along with my tv and htpc. like you, i just watch the occasional movie on my laptop, watch tons of tutorials and make tunes. i still watch action movies, but thats my off time, when i'm taking a break from studying, so i don't feel bad about it, just kick back and enjoy it.

also have tried meditation a few years back, was interesting and calming.

my problem when i make a tune isn't losing focus. i procrastinate on doing things that i need to do, that aren't much fun. such as practicing keyboard, reading a synth manual, organising samples etc. but i can happily spend hours tweaking synth patches or making beats.

the other main problem i have is that i often get stuck in a loop and don't know how to progress a tune. i'll spend ages making a small part then run out of inspiration. so if you have any ideas on that i'm all ears!

I'm also a relatively calm person...dont watch much TV, don't text my friends much (don't have most of my friends' phone numbers even), and I'm extremely un-talkative to anybody IRL.

i like your mentioning of modern action movies. drives me up the wall, has anyone seen quantum of solace??? i played a game where i counted how long the shots were. i think the longest was 5 seconds. shit almost gave me a seizure

Just saw this the other day, thank you so much Vespers, it has definitely helped so far!

A lot of the time what I have trouble with is saying something is 'good enough' and moving on. Which I think is a big one when it comes to getting choked up while producing a tune.

Also, really nice to see you on DSF!


P.S. - Saw that you're up in Vancouver, used to live up there for a while - can't wait to move back up!
