Still remember that game from 1996, watching it with my brother on TV. Up there with the best games I've ever seen.
I remember watching it too with my mate, who was a massive Liverpool fan. Then the next year and the same scoreline. Then the next year...and Princess Diana goes and fucking dies and all the matches get postponed

Yeah, my brother's a liverpool fan, which people that lived in Torquay during the 80's were bound to become (Still denies he's a glory hunter).
What a year for football, that match, Euro 1996 and of course, Birmingham City finishing 10th in Division One.

Funny, I've got mates who grew up in 90s Basingstoke who support Man U for the same reason

Fuck, even the team starting lineup gives me goosebumps
And yeah, Germany were SHIT that day - I mean, fucking Heskey got on the scoresheet.
exactly!
(although you could claim the Dutch were going through a similar type of transition at that time that Germany were when we tonked them...but let's not think about that! haha)
I don't turn on Korn to get it on, I be playin Digi Mystikz 'til the dawn

Even the bench was immense. McManaman has gotta be one of the most underated players. Just look at the general decline in the squad from 1990 World Cup & 1996 Euro Championships to the England squad of today:

Scott Parker and...um...?
At work, we came to the agreement that you could say Ashley Cole is one of the world's best left backs, and the other one we picked was Rooney as a striker, but even that's pushing it.
wub wrote:I'm standing by Scott Parker, though he does has some games where he's immense and some games where I forget he's actually on the pitch
Fair comment re; Ashley Cole. Rooney, maybe for a very brief period. Maybe.
Yeah, we thought that someone that has off seasons rather than off periods was pushing it, but we still stuck at it.
Parker plays well, but I don't think I can consider him in, say, the top 5 centre midfielders in the world. Think Spain have probably got that on lock.

A lot of the time in that position that's not a bad thing.
I was at the second Liverpool Newcastle 4/3 was sharing a season ticket with a mate who's turn it was to go, met a couple of Irish lads in the pubs about 2 hours before kick off looking for tickets, took them to the game managed to get tickets at face value when they were prepared to pay significantly more and they sorted me a ticket for helping them about. Felt blessed at full time the first 4/3 was better though much more even game not a collapse the 2nd was.

Nah, not yet, I do think he's up there though. Tough call, but I think Ashley Cole has just been consistently good at the top level for his whole career, at every stage. Can't remember a time I've ever heard anyone claim that Ashley Cole is playing shit.

As a Gooner, I find it a little bit difficult to admit, but Ashley Cole is definitely up there with the best left backs of his generation. I was fucking gutted when he left*

Agreed. However, his age is beginning to show.
