Headphones......?

Post by immortal » Fri Dec 30, 2011 11:01 pm

Ive had enough of borrowing, begging and stealing headphones for production, now i want some of my own!
Im writing alot of house/uk funky at the moment and occasionally borrowing a friends DT770's which i love - i was just wondering if DSF had any advice worth giving? I dont wanna spend all this money if i couldve got something a bit more suiting too me.
Alot of what im playing with is 808 and very sub orientated,so i obviously want too be able too hear it but without it being too loud in the overall mix.

Thats what im knockin out at the moment too give you some sort of idea

I really love my Sennheiser HD 280's , but yeah , i don't really have anything to compare them to besides cheap skullcandy/wesc headphones.
I would suggest that you buy headphones with a replaceble cable ( i think that most of the 'better' headphones have these )

Just bought some Senheisser HD 280 Pros after Christmas and I've got to say: these cans are fantastic. Flat sound, so you hear exactly what you're getting from the output - fantastic for production, but a little quirky looking. If you're DJing, these aren't the most stylish.

Pretty inexpensive at $95 USD

They look fine, sound great. I'd DJ with them. They require a proper amp, though, if you're wanting a truly flat representation. The 280's were my first studio cans and I love em.

I use Sennheiser HD 600 for a couple of years now and completelly in love with them. I use them for final stereo image tweaking if I'm in doubt.

They're very solid. My studio is a mess - they've fallen countless times. :D I only had to change the cable twice and finally bought HD650 cable - no problems from that point on. Have a listen to them if you get a chance.

I got some Sennheiser HD600s from RazorDogDeals on ebay for $300 USD last year. I really like them for production. Sometimes I forget I'm wearing headphones. Open back and extremely comfortable. They just aren't the most stylish. Check it out, they are probably still selling them up there. I don't know if shipping would be a bitch for you though.

I'm also on 280's, been loving them ever since I got them... Also found out a friend was using them for 5 years, they age well :D

Whatever you do, try the headphones out before you buy them...... I learned the hard way haha

This.

If you don't intend to do any tracking get the 990's, same as the 770's but open instead of closed. Open back is more suited for producing/mixing, unless you need to keep it absolutely quiet.

Really???
I thought i would need closed......?
It makes sense though, although i dont have a proper studio, doing most of my writing and mixing down in bedrooms etc, there wouldnt be alot of background noise but there would be some......
Thanks for your guys input

I used Sennheisers too, but then I went to a shop where I could compare like 20 headphones.
I'm talking about the ~150$ price range. I listened some coldplay, and RHCP.

The conclusion to me was:

Let me start with the headphones I choose first, and then explain why it sounds better than the other ones.
So I choose Sony MDR 7506, those headphones seemed to bring a flat and well balanced image about what's happening, I could hear everything nice and clear, nothing was missing, nothing was too loud, or too colourful.

Sennheisers seem to have too much low end, lacking some mids-midhighs, but not highends, I think they're boosted on the lows and the top frequencies

AKGs just sounded shit, I especially that MK II (if I remember right) I was stoned, because I used and still use AKG earplugs sometimes, they sound very nice, but the monitor headphones they make (at that price range) are just total failure.

Remember the price range was 150$ I bet Both AKG and Sennheiser has some decent monitor headphones out there, but not at that price range thats for sure. Unless they came up with something new in the last 1 year.
Overall I would say check out the Sony and compare it to the Sennheiser. Since I was a Sennheiser user and I loved their products, I was sceptical about the Sony, but after I bought them, I googled them and found out they are quite popular still at radio stations, and I can see them very frequently in youtube videos on singers/producers.
You should try and compare as much as you can, then maybe do some research on the internet whats the feedback how durable they are. You shouldn't just go in the store and let some1 say this is the bestseller and blah-blah, since obviously these headphones will effect your mixdowns and u want to have a good picture about whats going on with your tunes.

Hope I could help. :W:

I've tried those KRK KNS8400 at my local guitar center and the build quality is extremely cheap, the sound quality is horrible, frequencies above 12k hardly come through at all. Don't get.
...in my opinion
