Re: Tinnitus
Turn to monitors instead of headphones, as someone already pointed out. also, if you're playing out, get some good earplugs for when you're at the club either side of your set.
I had some moulded ones made about 2 years ago for £140 and I still wear them out now, even if i'm partying. Can't explain how nice it is to not have a ringing head on top of the hangover. Makes a massive difference and lesses fatigue and general tired feeling the next day as you don't strain your ears.
If you've ever worked with LTJ Bukem before, you'll know what I mean. That boy has 2k worth of monitoring on his tech rider and he rinses all 2k out of it. You don't want that in 15 years time.
Be careful dude.

I'm not sure what you mean. 2k as in money or hz? Dunno what a techrider is.. Are you saying he has super expensive monitors and he listens to them at high volumes all the time?Ferryman wrote:If you've ever worked with LTJ Bukem before, you'll know what I mean. Here's a question. The tv is on, and at a fairly medium volume. My headphones are open air so I can hear everything just fine. If I produce in silence, listening to the mix with Windows system volume at 6 it sounds fairly loud, can hear everything clearly. But at the same volume, same mix, I can't hear it at all over the tv. So I try and turn it up to hear it, and I have to turn it up quite a bit. Is that bad? Is it as loud as I think it is when I mix in silence if the tv at a normal volume is much louder?

'The artist require the following for the performance:
2 x 1210 mk2
2 x CDJ1000
1 x DJM600 or higher"
etc etc.
In LTJ Bukem's tech rider we were asked for 2 x 1000w monitors for the DJ booth, which he had about 2 feet away from his head and cranked right up. Not the best of ears.

Re: Tinnitus
I've got hypersensitive hearing + tinnitus from some medication I took.
The tinnitus isn't too bad (yet) just ringing, but the hypersensitive hearing makes loud sounds hurt like fuck, which is horrible for production/DJing. I have to wear earplugs a fair bit, but its manageable, I would suggest everyone invests in these (minimum) for going to shows;

Think I'm going to get some custom ones made, though.
It seems ironic having to ask people to turn things down having had years of people asking me to turn things down ..

Re: Tinnitus
I've listened to stupidly loud music all my life, including spending about 5 years, listening to my iPod on 100% volume for 45 mins in the morning and 45 mins in the evening on the bus to / from work... I get a bad ringing in my ears when it's quiet, but it doesn't hurt and lately I haven't really heard it so I think my hearing might be getting better

Re: Tinnitus
a quote by Reso from your very own dsfI can't go to a club without earplugs now, please please please wear earplugs in a club. i went deaf for a week in my right ear after playing once without earplugs and was paranoid that i was fucked for life.
I have permanent tinnitus now which is very very shit, a nice 3kz tone permanently in your ear is not the one.
Also i don't monitor at a ridiculous volume, i only turn up my tracks when it comes to the mixing stage and even then i'll take breaks all the time.

Re: Tinnitus
My dad suddenly got it in 1988, though he was a rocker, used to ride a Harley and went to all the hard rock gigs with bands like Budgie so that might have something to with itAxeD wrote:My dad got diagnosed with tinnitus a week ago. Was never exposed to loud noises.

Re: Tinnitus
I've got it in my right ear. It's not just due to loud music. Machinery is a cause for me as well.
It doesn't bother me at all, until I have to go to sleep. It's not at the point where sleep is impossible, but imagine having to go to sleep when all the time, it sounds like there's still a tiny machine running somewhere in the room, liek the humming of a Pc monitor or something.
I don't have it 24/7. It depends a little bit. Also sometimes the ringing is replaced by white noise, usually after I've gone out to a night with a decent system. It's actually less annoying than the ringing but much louder.

Re: Tinnitus
I used to have it quite bad but I got prescribed a nasal spray for sinusitis that helped loads.
All I get now is pressure in my head and a volume decrease in my right ear.
I have to block my nose and blow out everyday to equalize and get my ears to be a similar volume.

Re: Tinnitus
I get it sometimes, only after producing with loud loud headphones for a while
or at shows I usually end up with it a little bit near the end
I don't really worry about it though, I figure by the time I lose my hearing they'll have robot ears for me
Re: Tinnitus
My ears will ring for about 5 seconds at random times and then go back to normal. It's never been a regular thing at all, so I'm not too worried about it. Should I be?

Got it in my right ear due to listening to music way too loudly all the time, learnt my lesson now but its not too bad, only notice it at night when going to sleep or when i actually see the word tinnitus i notice it. Was paranoid as fuck when i first noticed it but now its easy to live with.

Re: Tinnitus
so does anyone have any elaborate experience with this? Mine has gotten progressively worse over the past month to the point where it is really starting to interfere with my day to day functioning.
I'm seeing my GP about it tonight, I'm sure he'll send me to a ear/nose/.... specialist, but maybe some of you here have already gone through that stage?
I've been avoiding listening on headphones all together. Deep Medi night two weeks ago didn't help even though I was way out in the back all of the time.I've been reading up on the subject but prospects aren't great (though some advancements have been made in treatment in recent years). I'm just really worried that I'm going to be stuck in the current state, which is problematic.
I'm just surpised that out of a bunch of people, I'm the one that's seemingly getting it the worst. I haven't been producing in half a year, I play music a lot yes, but I always figured I kept it below the 80 decibels... headphones might be a different story, but then how did I get it so sudden, I had no complaints what so ever before the last new year for example.

Re: Tinnitus
It's not always necessarily linked to music... Mine gets worse at times when I get various health problems (including minor ones: I got a cold two weeks ago which led my tinnitus to levels that prevented me from sleeping...). I might be wrong though, but that's what I gathered from my experience. Never been to an ear specialist because I'm pretty sure there's nothing to be done about it. I've had my tinnitus ever since I was born - at least I can remember hearing it at night in many childhood memories, even though I was not aware what that high-pitched noise was at the time -, though it's got a bit worse through times - sometimes for a short time, sometimes definitely -. it's always a bit random though: it got worse after dour festival 2009 even though i was only there for one day, but did not change after the same festival in 2010 and 2011 even though i stayed there 4 days... i've always got used to it so farjoeki wrote:so does anyone have any elaborate experience with this? Re: Tinnitus
Mine is directly linked to sinus.
When I got a nasal spray and helped to alleviate much of the sinus issues, the tinnitus improved.
