Hi
This isn't a "I'm trying to be funny thread" and
I know there are some great tutorials on the internet
Ascian
Depone
Distance
Dodge and Fuski...
CM Masterclass's
To name a few
But why do you think people make tutorials when they have little or no idea of what they are doing ?

Don't think it's specific to music production. It's the same in a lot of areas in life, as soon as somebody learns a couple of new tricks about something they feel the need to share this with the masses.
Sometimes this can be good if they have a proper grasp of the subject in the first place and are just looking to simplify or build on it for others.
Sometimes it is not so great, like you said, people who aren't considered competent to be giving others advice doesn't make a lot of sense.
It makes it harder to find decent things to learn from when you have to trawl through a lot of either basic (or sometimes just simply incorrect) information. But keep at it and it makes it all the more worthwhile when you do finally find that golden nugget of information that takes your production skills to the next level

Because they can - YouTube gives the ability for anyone to post anything about anything, tutorials aren't any difference.
The fact is that there are so many shit tutorials (as lowpass has noted) that people grab a single bit of knowledge and consider themselves an expert, or at least an expert to the level where they consider it okay to tell other people. Bad knowledge + inept research = bad tutorials + bad habits formed.
Production inbreeding of poor production techniques means that poor knowledge is taken as gospel by some, and the whole self fulfiling prophecy thing rears it's ugly head again as it permeates down through the stages blah blah blah.
Maybe if some many internet producers weren't so singularly focussed on their 15mins, we wouldn't be in half the mess we're in.

i often wonder why most youtube vids exist in the first place
i've been feeling more and more like an old guy getting annoyed by all the gadgetry all over the place and everything on the web
anyway those who can do, do. Those who can't, teach. And those who can't teach, teach gym.
So basically if these fellas could scrape together any decent tunes, they wouldn't keep themselves busy by making lame tut videos
Its the best they can do for themselves to gain some views showing people how to make a patch. saves making the rest of the tune for someone else

The same can be said for music itself, there is plenty of crap music on the net. When you make something easy enough for anyone to do but is fashionable (like youtube has with videos, and your modern DAW has with making a beat), inevitably it means you have to wade through crap to find hidden gems.

Wait guys... You're actually complaining that someone is sharing their knowledge about music production? Isn't something wrong with the picture here?
You should be happy the advice (wrong or not) is out there. WHat you do with it is another story.

Why would I be happy that wrong advice is out there and freely available, and moreover is being taken as gospel by people?

It's just a matter of respect I think. The person posting usually thinks the advice is right and is using his/her time to share it with hatever community he posts for.

So you're saying that people who post bullshit tutorials on YouTube should be respected for it?

I think props to anyone who is trying to help other people shit or not, there is good and bad tutorials all over the net but its down to the individual to work out whats good and whats not by trying out some of the stuff being taught. You either find it useful or you don't.I think i have probably watched every tutorial on youtube well near enough.

You, being an intelligent human being, are able to tell what's good advice and what's not. Support people who are good and helpful, so they stand out in the crowd and be happy there is a crowd.

Fuck that hippy shit.
If half the shitty tutorials didn't exist, the general state of production might actually advance instead of chasing it's constantly shittier and shittier tasting tail.

its quite hard to know whats good and whats bad advice when you're first starting out. i agree that we could definitely do without the crappy tutorials, as they just spread misinformation.
i don't think the people in question know their tutorials are shit - when i first started my synth patches sounded like shit, as did my tunes. i look back on it now and cringe as my ears have developed, but at the time, i thought i was onto something. so i'm guessing a lot of people probably go through this curve - showing off their latest patches or tunes thinking they sound ok.
as others have said, if they were great producers, they wouldn't have much time to post on youtube, they'd be touring the world playing their music, and in the studio making music. so its actually pretty hard to find really decent tutorials, even the computer music ones that are made by pro's are hit and miss.

i think most of us find it annoying when all these talentless people that make tutorials make shit songs. also their stupid tone death songs have loads of views and some of these guys think theyre some kind of "professional producer" lol. i think what i find annoying about is all the lame stupid cheesyness of it all.
i do make brostep but i really dont like the randomly picked pop song remixed with modern talking and bitcrush yoi yoi crap thats inspired by a lot of the retarded tutorials out there.
whats so crap about it all is theres no hype on real shit like how to make a lush pad, or techniques on automating delay effects in a song.
one thing that surprised me on youtube is that when i was learning how to use synthmaker, wow there were hardly any videos at all! and the ones that were up for a few years had like a 100 views or less.. its a shame too many people all want to download a skrillex preset and not want to know how to use a synth.. yet it would never cross their minds to even learn about how these synths work.
