Why are we caring? Don't watch the tutorial if you don't agree with it.
Re: Why do people who are shit make tutorials ?
What mess? It just makes it easier to stand out, those who actually know wtf they're doing. I met a guy in SF who had been teaching logic tutorials for a year or two, and clearly knew his shit - ended up being on the team that advised the Logic guys how to make the next version - and then went to bollywood to help produce stuff.wub wrote:Maybe if some many internet producers weren't so singularly focussed on their 15mins, we wouldn't be in half the mess we're in.
Let the masses think they know something - those in the know don't hire them.

Re: Why do people who are shit make tutorials ?
Just because someone is a great producer and knows all the tricks or whatever, doesn't make them a good teacher. I'd say more often than not, the most insightful tutorials that are well paced and easy to follow are done by no name producers that may have some shit tracks (who doesn't?).
Re: Why do people who are shit make tutorials ?
Sorry wub, but I'm with Sagal on this one. And its interesting to hear you take this stance. Usually you're the one to back those less advanced. Again...reality is people can like you said. And sharing knowledge, whether it's good or not, comes from a positive action. It may perpetuate bad habits, but it's not there intentionally to screw with people's production. That alone makes the other argument just sound bitter. A shitty tut still took time and effort to make. Like many things in life, it's perspective...choose the glass half full. I remember a recent resampling thread by some dude in the uk( not at my comp, but I'd look it up) and people were calling him out on his habits...depone, a respected producer here, chimed in to defend him by saying how quick people are to shit on free tutorials. For myself, I feel incredibly privlidged to get insight on people's production practices. I can make the choice to take what I want from it, confirm/deny/compare techniques...to me I can't put a price on that when we're talking about ( for the most part) a self taught art...which at the end of the fucking day, is all subjective anyway. Wtb more objectivity please. And eff the happy shit?? Wtf...are we suppose to have fun doing this? It's like the line between fun and being a serious producer is too unnecessarily thin.

Re: Why do people who are shit make tutorials ?
I'm with wub for this one - people's crappy tutorials really annoy me. I don't care that they exist, it is just infuriating having to wade through about five of them, and having to scan through the video to find out that someone's tutorial for the FL Love Philter consists of pointing out the Cutoff knob
A similar situation is when someone asks "how do I make these drums/bass/atmospherics?" and the first couple of responses are basically "listen to the drums/bass/atmopherics you are interested in, then go and make them". That is not useful advice.

He's done a series of about 6 vids that are actually really damn good, especially for people newer to drums or bass creation.Gurnumsbug wrote:Depone does tutorials?

Re: Why do people who are shit make tutorials ?
I find that the more i learn from watching tutorials on youtube, the harder it gets to find anything of any use.
its great if your a noob, coz theres a million videos of how to assign a LFO to filter cutoff. But not so good if your trying to find something a bit more technical....
that said. most of what ive learnt comes from youtube tutorials, so although there are faaar to many crappy time wasting tutorials on there im still kinda glad youtubes there if need it.
wade through enough "how to sound like skrillex," and "how to make a massive datsik patch" vids and you will find a Gem or two in the process... I remember finding the old "reverse reverb" trick on a vid.. i would probley never have thought of that otherwise... and its an amsing trick

Great advice taken from the very in-depth "USE YOUR EARS" school of mixdowns

The 'less advanced' asking questions, yes - I fully support any new producers and wherever possible will do my utmost to help and guide, I don't think anyone on here could accuse me of anything different?
But there is a line between backing the 'less advanced', and then sitting back and watching those same 'less advanced' make tutorials.
(NB; Not a big fan of the term 'less advanced' but have left it as is to avoid confusion)

I think once you'v past a certain stage it becomes difficult to find new useful information whereever you look, on youtube, dsf and so on. Im not really siding with either of the arguments here because yeah its fucking anoying to wade through hundreds of tutorials that uncover the mystery of massivies LFO function but lets be honest once you get past the stage of learning basic synthesis and how your DAW works then theres not much else to learn apart from exactly HOW it works and why, the rest is basically practise and creativity which is probably why we all end up on here chattin bollocks

Nope. No accusations intended, sorry if it came across that way. I myself have always found you to be incredibly supportive. And I know that where I currently stand, I can't discount my naivety because the fact is, I've really only been into producing for just over a year and a half now.The 'less advanced' asking questions, yes - I fully support any new producers and wherever possible will do my utmost to help and guide, I don't think anyone on here could accuse me of anything different?

Re: Why do people who are shit make tutorials ?
Some of the tutorials I've really valued over the years have been pandadnb tutorials, rusko's production tutorials and various other ones that were released through CM mag etc....
I agree the quality is getting worse, but at the same time you get some new gems like MrBillsTunes & Torley etc...
In fact, if I find myself in the loop of watching shitty video tutorials on Youtube I just go to torley's videos and check out some of his reviews... He's our Masuka of the music world
But to really answer the question... It's because dubstep has become too popular. When anything becomes too popular the quality control is really gonna go down the tubes.... Vimeo is usually the place I go for more quality tutorials, but, there isn't much and it doesn't stop everyone else from going to YouTube to learn...
