when you allow the perpetuation of meaningless connections through arbitrary association... you may never get away from high school !

like anyone on here is anywhere near important or exciting enough for a government to care aboutJhonny2x4 wrote:No deletion because mine doesn't exist.
Have fun voluntarily filling the governments file on you.
the most anyone on here comes close to being spied on is by automated bots who pick up keywords from what you type... which they do anyway by your searches and your general internet activity outside of facebook unless you permanently run through several proxy ip's to disguise your wanderings into the CP section of 4Chan
i dont even notice the ads on my facebook, let alone click on them, and i put the same shit in facebook messages as i do in texts that are a) saved on othr peoples phones, most of which are 'smart' therefore just as easily 'tappable', b) say in conversations over mobile phones, c) say in emails, d) say over other private messaging clients
i could give a shit
hating on facebook for any reason other than 'im simply deciding not to use it' is just as bate as the people who update their statuses almost minute by minute with inane, trivial, minor glimpses into the pit of vacuous and mainly incoherent drivel that is their mind
''I DONT NEED FACEBOOK" "WHAT DID WE DO BEFORE FACEBOOK?!?!" "BLAHBLAHBLAHFACEBOOK" all VERY cogent, and interesting points, that boil down to a nice pat on the back for yet again being so ahead of the flipping curve

Re: Deleting Facebook
^^ LOL yea exactly
Seriously, conspiracy theorists/ paranoid/ ridiculously skeptical people crack me up
Targeted ads based on stuff you might be interested in based on previous clicks, fuck me, what a travesty.
Facebook is stupidly useful, revolutionised keeping in touch with friends for the better, for me anyway.

Exactly what Noam said.
These people who dont use FB due to the terrible privacy, guessing you dont send emails, or use mobile phones or even talk in public etc either?
Just cant be too safe.................theyre EVERYWHERE.

besides if you're gonna delete your FB, make sure you just give the people you want to keep in touch with some other contact info..don't just disappear and be like ''aaahh shiet so much for those intangible connections etc''.

Re: Deleting Facebook
yeah i don't think its so much conspiracy nuts but principle.. go back a couple of decades the use of cctv on every corner and a mandatory ID card would be considered heinous.. now its so what? big deal there hundreds of footage of me a day, big deal I have to have identity to show who I am. Its principle that matters I was stupid enough to make a facebook and give all sorts of information that now I look back and think shit I really shouldn't have done that.
I really dislike all the ridicule at people who might want to safeguard their privacy and might not want to be bombarded with trivial information and who don't want their information to be excessively and easily made public. That is the direction facebook is going, in a nut shell privacy is slowly being eroded and if your not with it your some how a nut?

Re: Deleting Facebook
The main difference between Facebook and CCTV, ID Cards, Stop & Search and the other erosions of civil liberties is that there's no choice involved. Walk down a street with a camera and your actions will be recorded... no opt-out, no way of avoiding it.
Nobody forces you into sharing your information on Facebook... it's entirely under your control what you give out. You don't even have to be on it at all!
People are so desperate for there to be evil bad guys in the world. Facebook is just a social networking website created by an extremely fortunate student... dude was in his teens when he set it up so that his mates could use it. It's only natural that when he expands it from something that'd run off his bedroom PC into a multi-billion dollar, global enterprise there are going to be some growing pains and things he didn't think of... it doesn't mean he's fucking Skeletor, it means he's human.

Re: Deleting Facebook
true people have willingly chosen to share information with facebook and other people they are connected to but I don't think people were aware that their information was shared with third parties, where was the option to share the information outside of facebook? im sure it was embedded somewhere in the policy statement but im pretty confident that many people didn't read the policy statement and go yeah Im ok with it because facebook is such an innnovative tool
Re: Deleting Facebook
Depends how much information you're talking about. This site logs personal information about you too... most websites do. Whether anyone human ever looks at it is another matter... frankly, Facebook amasses too much data for people to be looking at it... it's used to target adverts at you and given that the web is plastered with adverts anyway, most of which are entirely irrelevant, that doesn't seem a terrible thing.jigglypuff wrote:true people have willingly chosen to share information with facebook and other people they are connected to but I don't think people were aware that their information was shared with third parties, where was the option to share the information outside of facebook?
Do I really care that Amazon know what music I like or that I smoke dope? Isn't it better that they do so they can cut down the amount of irrelevant shit I'm forced to ignore on a daily basis? I know I used to like going into record shops where the guy behind the counter remembered what I bought last time, how come it's scary when a computer does it? They already know where I live... I had to tell them that in order to, like, buy stuff from them... but it's on the electoral roll if anyone really needed to find out... really, what bits of shared information are actually scary?
It's as if people think the government are going to come knocking because they mentioned pills on Facebook. Can you imagine the logistics involved in using something like Facebook to control a population? 60 million individual pages of utter shite to monitor every day? "Oh, I'm glad we read 4 years worth of this dude posting about his dinner... he's just told his mates that he's bought a bag of weed, WE'RE GOING IN!"
If they were taking my photos and showing them on the screens at Times Square, I'd be pretty pissed, but they're not, are they? They're just telling Tesco that I "liked" Crunchy Nut Cornflakes. Which they already knew.

Re: Deleting Facebook
My 2c-b dealer is actually like this, I once sent him a message saying "any chance I can pick up before the 5th?" and he IMMEDIATELY phoned me up and started shouting about how they were gonna search his messages and shit. So I posted on his wall "I LOVE DRUGS DO YOU HAVE ANY DRUGS I WANT TO BUY SOME DRUGS PLEASE DO YOU ALSO LOVE DRUGS BECAUSE I DEFINITELY LOVE DRUGS YES I DO"magma wrote: It's as if people think the government are going to come knocking because they mentioned pills on Facebook. Re: Deleting Facebook
the only time the breach of privacy matters is within a legal context
i tell someone i plan to buy a shipment of cocaine... on facebook
it gets logged
i get arrested
it gets brought up as 'evidence'
ON THE OTHERHAND
i tell someone on facebook im going to a protest
it gets logged
it gets traced and picked up
protest is discovered
simple solution to these minor problems is dont be a fucking idiot when you're using it
the wider problem when using it is that if you aren't using it and you aren't face to face you're at just a disadvantage privacy-wise than if you do use facebook
phonecalls have been tapped since day one, if you wana stay off the radar then you need a non-registered number, a fake name, different sims/numbers every other week
there's limits to how far your privacy can really be taken as a principle, though i understand the desire to maintain the upkeep of that principle to a maximum [to a certain degree]
i also think privacy in that context is an idea or principle that has never caught up with the age we live in - when everyone in Britain knew each others' grandmothers and there weren't 6.5bllion people connected via an intangible web of coded ethereal information then privacy and the safeguarding of ones own was tantamount; now we have privacy simply by being part of the 99% of nobody's who make the world spin for the rest. no one gives a shit about you
even if the govt or police or advertising agencies or reptiles DO give a shit about you, they STILL DONT give a shit about you
so i'll take my momentary joy in the little red-flag at the top left of my screen; and the new friends and people i've met IRL that i first met on facebook; and the information i've gleaned off of there that has served to improve my life even marginally: because im not going to be made to look or feel like a tnuc for doing so by Ethan Hunt and his merry band of ThuperThecretThquad members THanks.

This. The vast, vast, vast, vast, VAST majority of people are absolutely not worth spying on. For the most part, people are fucking boring... the only people that give (and have ever given) a fuck about you are your friends, family, colleagues, customers and businesses that sell to you... i.e. the people you socially interact with, no matter how you interact with them. That was the same for someone living in 1011 as it was 2011.noam wrote:no one gives a shit about you
The constant need to create conspiracies and boogeymen seems more like a need to validate oneself in this sea of generic humanity as it does logical.
"I'm special enough so that I'd be the one that gets screwed over on the website that hosts 800 million other people. They're out for ME!"
If you need help staying under the radar amongst 800 million people, you probably need investigating.
