know how much you lot love chatting bullshit, so why don't you help my get my degree in the art of bulshitting aka undergrad politics

2 essays 3000 words each in for monday

1) DO NATIONS HAVE A RIGHT TO SELF-DETERMINATION?

Cheers!
did a very similar essay to this in my second year, but never call the degree i did bullshitting, i was one of the few people in the whole year who was actually interested in the subject rather than doing an easy 'bullshitty' degree. My lecturer was Annika Bergman Rosamond, who, as she was from the LSE side of things, was very up on her international theory. fascinating subject, she just wasn't very good at getting that across to a lot of the class.I ended up getting a 2.1 in that module, completely down to the essay. Really nice question though, so much stuff to talk about, examples and theory to bring in. Shame you only got 3000 words though. Good luck with your bullshitting :i:
it was more of a comment on peoples perceptions of what a politics degree is, usually because of a disillusionment with politics and it relating to them. a lot of people tend to pull a face when i tell them. obviously i do care about my degree and take it seriously (well try to). but some of the modules were bullshit so i do stand by that to some extent. there was a marx module which basically involved a guy at the front ranting for a lecture every week, then 2 hour seminars sat in a room with 20 wannabe che Guevaras. i just found it fustrating. absolute bullshit and i dont use the term lightly... dropped out of the module. conflict, development and human rights theory is where its at: majority of the political philosophy modules here are shocking.

anyway it was an offhand comment, youre making me feel guilty for hating my degree now

Your teachers work on cosmopolitanism looks interesting and relevant, but theres a book shes done about post 9/11 security that might be great for my dissertation. thanks for the heads up.
sorry if i sounded a bit pissy last night, bad night. i know that look when you tell people that you do politics, it gets better once you get to MA level though. if you are going to go with the self-determination question i would write to your tutor - quite a debatable topic - and as such i would find out their stance on the issue at hand and tailor your answer, and certainly references, in line with their thoughts. i hated the idea of doing that for the first two years, by the third i realised that that's where the better marks are. which uni are you at?

I'm at York University, in my third year of politics. name of the module is global justice.

essentially the argument for the self determination is one of cosmopolitanism vs nationalism... in my eyes they do have a right to self determination, as long as this does not infringe the rights of others within their own society.

not much progression so far lol, need to stay away from here

For self determination, I would mention the sometimes imperialistic policies of the IMF in regards to developing nations. On the one hand, international aid should be given only on certain conditions that the receiving governments show they are willing and able to enact prudent policies. However, all too often, the IMF holds itself in a position of intellectual superiority and simply does not listen to experts from the region, sometimes leaving them completely in the dark as to what conditions they would impose. Experts from the receiving region should be put in the driver's seat, since they are much more familiar with all the nuances of their home country. The IMF has a one-size-fits-all approach and imposes harsh austerity and radical market liberalization on too many developing nations that ultimately suffer heavily for it.

Your module's name sounds like a superhero team lol. I'm third year myself at sheffield. Presuming you have to do a dissertation? Trying to get going with mine and so far its not going well. i think once I figure out the question it should be ok but having spent my whole life basically choosing from a range of questions I struggling a little bit to come up with one that I think will be enjoyable

There is a massive amount of work and it does become extremely stressful when you've got essays/exams as well as 12 hours shifts on placement and all your paperwork for placement to do too haha

Its good as long as you make sure you pick good modules(basically if they mention the EU then refuse lol). It is a lot less focused on institutions than at A level which I didn't really expect but is a lot more interesting.
All in all I would recommend it.
I miss being able to A level essays where you didn't have to reference, that is a bitch

I don't feel like spending time on this but I love how you talk about your own
education being bullshit :) Maybe I just take everything way too seriously though.
