i think actually the best usb price quality is focusrite but dont have the amount of inputs you wantglottis5 wrote:i'm looking for an external usb audio interface that would be good for djing (using traktor on my pc), allow me to easily record audio from my pc onto my tape deck (and vice versa), and record audio from my turntable/keyboards onto my pc. I can do all this stuff right now, but it's a pain hooking and unhooking all those wires constantly, i want something that allows me to use my hardware in my daw seamlessly, as well as bounce audio back and forth between my pc and external hardware easily. something decent, not too expensive and with lots of inputs/outputs i suppose.
i've been looking at the m-audio fast track pro. does anyone have any experience with it or know of another audio interface that is better value?

maybe you can set up a external mixer for turntable and keyboards wathever into the interface, you can look to into the native instruments interfaces
if you are using a non laptop pc its better to just get a emu 1212 pci or pci-e really

Found this whilst looking up cheap, yet "powerful" soundcards. If someone has already posted something on this, please disregard. USB powered, has 1 xlr/1/4" input, works with mac and windows, with a variety of different daws that work with it. If my math is correct, it comes to roughly 141 pounds, figured that from the 270 us dollar amount. Overall, it seems extremely worth it, hoping to pick one up myself and test it out.

I'm wondering what a soundcard does (Serious question not looking to be trolled) I've only been producing music for about 3 months now I only have fl-studio and ableton and a akai lpd8 and a large amount of samples. I know what Most things are just not a soundcard

Re: [production bible 2] Soundcards
I'm in the market for an Audio Interface and I pulled up a ton of information to compare the AudioBox USB, AudioBox 22 VSL, Scarlett 2i2, and Komplete Audio 6.
I think I'm going to buy the AudioBox VSL. 96 kHz monitoring, midi inputs, $199 price point, good reviews on drivers, and supposedly a great preamp.
Anybody approve or object?

Lexicon i-onix u22
Pros - looks sweet, nice knobs, comes with a free reverb (antheon II VST/AU reverb plug-in with 6 legendary Lexicon reverbs) - fine preamps
Cons - feels sort of cheaply built together? - mine died quick.

Re: [production bible 2] Soundcards
I know this probably sounds like a stupid question, but whats wrong with just using the audio out jack on my laptop? Also, I recently got a presonus firestudio, but havent been able to install it yet because Im using fruityloops through parallells on my macbook, and it gets all confused - does a firestudio do pretty much the same thing as an audio card?

The Presonus Firestudio is an audio card. I myself have the Presonus Audiobox USB. It isn't 2.0 compatible, BUT it's only 2x2, 24-bit, 48khz, and it works great.
Macs don't require drivers, so you should be able to just "Plug & Play," there shouldn't be any other issues. Also, there are many issues with just using the audio jack, but to condense it down to one word: Quality. If that holds no value to you, then by all means go ahead.
Re: [production bible 2] Soundcards
I'm in the market for a sound card and I was hoping someone could recommend me one... I've done some snooping myself, but it's pretty difficult to determine how good the audio quality is. It seems like the PreSonus FireStudio Mobile is up my ally, buy I'm not completely sure. Is the quality really that much different from the audio output on my macbook pro? How much money should I spend to get a decent increase in sound quality?
It would be sweet if someone could post a side by side comparison of something using a audio output from the computer versus using a good external audio interface.
Also, what's the difference between firewire and usb interfaces?
I need a card that supports midi input, has a monitor output, and a mic input, but I don't need a bajillion I/O's... most of what I'm going to be doing will be within my DAW, but I'd like the option to record vocals or a live instrument once in a while. I don't have a ton of money to spend.
Thanks, folks

I'm new to things and I'm looking for exactly what you are. I have a $200-250 budget. Hopefully someone could share their insights with us, if I find anything that seems to fit what we're looking for I'll post back.MoonUnit wrote:I'm in the market for a sound card and I was hoping someone could recommend me one... I'm curious how outdated some of the older posts are in terms of the technology and current market. I know technology advances fast, and the market follows, so it seems like info from 2+ years ago might not be that helpful to someone looking in the market now.
Edit: After reading http://blog.dubspot.com/understanding-audio-interfaces/...
I was wondering if there would be any major difference in performance of a USB audio interface vs a PCI soundcard of roughly the same quality. For now, my set up is very simple. M-Audio Oxygen 49 USB MIDI controller and ableton. "Everything in the box." I won't need a bunch of ins/outs for now. So I'm looking for a good quality, yet simple audio interface to suit that. Both USB and PCI seem reasonable, but I really don't know much more than that. I think I'd enjoy the portability of a USB interface and being able to simply plug it into another computer, but it seems like there might be some extra power to be had in a PCI card (Again, roughly of the same quality). Any input would be greatly appreciated!
