Lol. He set a new standard of what? Copying a style that had already been done a couple of years before him, just having Deadmau5 pushing his name?
I don't care either way for Skrillex, not a fan of his tunes, so I don't listen to them, but he's definitely not doing anything new.
Anyone else think it's weird when someone refers to a producer/dj by their real name when they aren't friends?
soronery wrote:Too easy to sit behind a keyboard with a playlist of dubstep tunes on, arguing about the defintion of a word in relation to a sound.
All that melts away when the lights are down and the bass is up.

Thrilla wrote:but obviously skrillex appeals to a lot more people than burial. you can't deny skrillex's skill. nobody can.
you answered your own question. it's about what's the most appealing to the mainstream audience. most of the nominees and winners are pop music in their own categories (not pop as in genre, but as for "popular music"). that doesn't mean that everything nominated for a grammy is shit, but it definately doesn't mean that it's great quality either. awards like these are for people, who don't have the time or the ambition to get deeper into music and therefore always stay on the surface of things, which is fine when it works for them. but it's a fact that there are loads of producers and artists out there, who have a higher quality level than most of these pop artists, but still don't get recognised, because their music is too challenging to sell it to billions, who are satisfied with what the mainstream media channels serve them.
as for skrillex, i can't say i'm an expert in music theory or production or that i analyzed all of his tunes, but from what i heard, i can't recognize the genius and impeccable skills a lot of people claim. it just sounds flat and plastic to me, with no soul or swagga.
Fucking poetic, spot on, and couldn't have been stated better.
@hutyluty: I don't hate you, and I don't hope you die. I like you a lot.
Shut the fuck up ya bunch of bitches.
Some are looking for the chilly and sorrowful genre, other's may be looking for the speedy and more party friendly genre. That's where dubstep splits at in reality. Some like to chill out. Some like to rock out like there's no tomorrow. Music taste pretty much defines peoples personality and how far there personality goes in my opinion. I listen to everything such as...
Anathallo, Atmosphere, Asking Alexandria, Parkway Drive, Immortal Technique, Big L, Wu-Tang Clan, Rodney Atkins, Army Of The Pharaohs, Chronic Future, 311, Tomorrows Bad Seeds, Ballyhoo!, Pepper, Atreyu, In Flames, Northstar, Deltron 3030(Del Tha Funky Homosapien), Eyedea, Switchfoot, Soilwork, Kid Cudi, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alesana, A Day To Remember, AFI, The Beatles, Common, Death Cab For Cutie, The Animals, Guns N Roses, Keane, The John Butler Trio, Nas, Talib Kweli, Veil Of Maya, I See Stars, Gorilla Zoe, Aphex Twin, , Goldfinger, Big Reel Fish, Limp Bizkit, Creed, Lifehouse, The Used, Shaggy, From First To Last, 9th Wonder, Miike Snow, Mutemath, Alkaline Trio, N.W.A, Say Anything, Anberlin, Pharoahe Monch, The Expendables, Eazy-E, Five Finger Death Punch, Curren$y, Nujabes, The Mamas and The Papas, 500 Miles to Memphis, Marcy Playground, Orgy, Linkin Park, Minus The Bear, The Human Abstract, Last Winter, Murs, Interpol, Cunninglynguist, The Green, Scroobius Pip, J BOOG, Matisyahu, The Classic Crime, Chemical Brothers, Frank Sinatra, Stone Temple Pilots, Mac Miller, John Mayer, Slipknot, Jacks Mannequin, Jeremy Ashida, Maroon 5, Simon & Garfunkel, Rob Zombie, Outkast, Failedflight.
I grew up listening to everything since I was little(From Britney Spears, Sum41, Pokemon First Movie CD, Happy Ass Trance To Biggie, 2pac, Poison, Born Of Osiris, Bob Marley, Wiz Khalifa, Tyga. <-- Example for shit you guys recognize. Music is my life. And if you'd appreciate it enough then you'll shut the fuck up and quit bitching about "dubstep" who the fuck cares what genre it is. The point.... is whichever artist whomever thinks is good.....is good. It makes them happy? Then it's good music.
For EDM I mostly listen to DoctorP/FluxPavilion/Skream&Benga(Old&NewShit)/Darude/DaftPunk/PrettyLights/ATB/DillonFrancis/AlvinRisk/Spor/FeedMe/Joker/Mantis/Figure/Flinch/Eptic/Chuckie/Avicii/Roksonix/PorterRobinson/12thPlanet/Nero/Skrillex/Hooky/Burial/Noisestorm/ZedsDead/BAR9/KnifeParty/Madeon/Funtcase/CookieMonsta/LiquidStranger/TheGlitchMob/Pendulum/MagneticMan/KillTheNoise/Rusko/Downlink/JamesEgbert/MordFustang/GarethEmery/DadaLife/Tomba/PaperDiamond/Netsky/Brown&Gammon/TMBA
As you can see most of the stuff for EDM ^ I like speedy & more party friendly cuz I love to dance my ass off while rolling and dance with some bitches. Then when I toke and chill with some buddies I tend to listen to more of the dark/chill vibes such as Burial/Joker/AphexTwin/Benga/OldFluxPavilion/OldRusko/MtEden/Hooky.
Yeah I love music so much that I'll make a huge list of it.
So to the point. My personal opinion I believe Skrillex stands out and makes some catchy melodic tunes with lyrics that you can sing-along to which relates to more of the mainstream audience of music. It's more happy sounding and it catches on more with girls compared to other "dubstep/brostep" tunes hence why it's more popular.
You have to admit that he's a mastermind at what he does. Making *annoying sounds listenable and his production/style is crazy but good. It may be too wild for the deep vibe - jungle/garage folks but it really truely is a creative good production. He's one-of-a-kind as of right now for what he does.
His production isn't good and isn't hard to make? Okay recreate it then and try to get as much listeners he has now without mass marketing such as Lady Gaga/Justin Bieber/ Lil Wayne/ Nicki Minaj.
Okay yeah his music might be "mainstream" now but was he like that when his albums came out? No. He got there himself. Every fucking song he made was pretty much a hit for the big audiences. And I started listening to dubstep since 09' when I was a Junior in high school. So I remember when this fool came out.
Scary Monsters & Sprites? Everyone knows that fucking song by heart and can hum it in there head even if you wanna hate it. It's there..
Cinema?
All I Ask Of You?
Bangarang?
First Of The Year(Equinox)?
Rock N Roll?
My Name Is Skrillex?
So why do people hate on Skrillex so much? If you have said this at least once in your head then it relates to you. But of course we won't know exactly who it is or admits to it.
1. People liked him at first but then too many people started liking him so they hate him now cuz of it. He's "mainstream" aka uncool now
2. I've been here since day 1 for dubstep. Yeah Zed Bias & Pinch are so sick. Who the fuck is Rusko, Emalkay. This is pretty tight actually not really sure about it though. Oh it's cool to see what Rusko is doing to dubstep I guess. Fast Forward to the end of 2010(Aug-Dec) Who're all these artists(DoctorP/Flux/Skrillex/Borgore) All hell nah ah nah bruh. What the fuck are they doing to dubstep. Fast forward to 2011. WOW dubstep went mainstream and it's not even "dubstep"(In veteran terms) WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW. FUCK SKRILLEX.
3. His image : "OMG HE WAS IN A EMO BAND? OMG LOOK AT HIS HAIR, OMG HE'S AMERICAN AND PEOPLE SAY HE'S DUBSTEP" Don't be a cigarette and judge on how he looks unless you really are that gay then okay type away. Some reason I always see America vs. UK on almost every youtube video no matter what it is from music to politics and on this forum...who cares where the music is from..really? He never said all his shit was dubstep. He pretty much is a mix of a lot of EDM genres. It's for the love of music. Who the fuck cares about genre. Don't be immature about things(Fanboy of whatever samething as Xbox 360 vs. PS3 vs. PC on youtube, Muscles vs. Imports for cars) Stfu and appreciate what you like.
4. It's a repeating-cycle of immature-insecure people that needs to stop. I've seen dumbass comments on youtube such as "Skrillex isn't even fucking dubstep. You guys need to listen to real dubstep like BAR9, Datsik, Bassnectar. <--- Duplicates of some dsf forum kids? Yeah it doesn't stop and it only gets worse.
I also never see anyone hate against "deep-vibes/jungle/garage type dubstep". So I'll be the annoying-prick aka the usuals I see on the forum.
1. "Oh my god....deep-vibe/jungle type dubstep isn't even good. It's pretty much a repetitive drum loop going across the whole track with a couple of water drops here and there with an atmosphere synth going across it"
2.@100man "Oh my god how do you not like Skrillex? Oh nevermind duh I can tell by your sig...Haha what a shit track you just got that sample from Vengeance packs and the only thing you did special in production was side-chain your piano-sounding synth to the kick, I'm so glad I don't live in the UK"
3. "Haha, You go to Burial shows? What you like to brock out with a bunch of dudes dressed in all T's and Cargo-pants? In a dark-room tripping on ketamine that probably smell like shit? Haha how gay is that. I'd rather be feeling good on some Molly or X and be dancing with some girls to some up-beat shit with lights flickering all over for some good ass visuals and seeing wild colors all around me"
So how do you guys like the Role-Reversal? It's all meant for exaggeration and shits & giggles. What I said above I admit I'm ignorant. BUT that's how it is when I don't hear much of it and no one bitching about it.
See what's like to see this everyday on almost every thread cuz people are annoying? I admit I'm a smartass and joke a shit ton but some shit gets old like the stuff I brought up above.
Seriously just open your eyes up and go to one of these massive shows. They seriously are sooooooo fun and epic. Bring a girl with you and roll together(Throw Your Gunfingers Up). The lights/girl/up-beatmusic/vibe from the massive amounts of people/how people are dressed all crazy is fun. It's a dreamworld really.
I've gone to a lot of shows from mellowed out reggae shit. To moshing and doing circle pits. To dreamworld huge "brostep" in your terms "raves"
The moral of the story is to promote music/share music/appreciate music/talk about upcoming events. All I see is bitching about dubstep. And being smartasses to people that need help. Not cool.
On a side-note. I might be going to Coachella later in April this year :] in California. Road-Trip! Go to events like these. I swear they are worth it!
So in the words of Parkway Drive "Cry Me A Fucking River & Drown In It Bitch" & also All American-Rejects ''Just Move Along, Move Along, Just To Make It Through" & the golden words from WAR "Why can't we be friends" Let's all live our happy lives and not bitch about every artist that comes & goes & rather appreciate and spread music that you like instead.

you obviously didn't even understand what i was saying. my point wasn't even about skrillex, but about the grammies not being an indicator for quality. bitches? lol. gtfo clown!
Yeah I put shit like Mt. Eden on purpose cuz I have the balls to say what I enjoy in music and stand up for it. So what.
How can you not chill to this song while high? Reminds me of the summer nights years back. Who the fuck gives if it has 5mil plays and the other vid has 28mil. I'm not gonna hate it cuz it got big. If that's not the reason for you then please explain.

Shed a new light not a new asshole in peoples lives.

Cinema was the top dubstep track of 2011, simply because it was the top dubstep track of 2011. End of story.

Everything you said
Gotta say mate, you're coming across like a top knobhead.
Nobody cares what you listen to, it doesn't make an opinion more valid.
Nobody actually listens to anyone if they say Skrillex's music is easy to make.
To say he got there himself when he was pushed massively by Deadmau5 is a bit of a joke. If you have one of the world's biggest dance artists bigging you up and putting stuff out on his label, you're gonna get popular. Fair does, he hasn't been "marketed" in the traditional sense as much as Lady Gaga, Beyonce, etc. but he still isn't nearly as big as those 2 artists. This is the age of "following" on the internet, and people will trust their favourite producer'/dj's opinions.
Catchy is subjective.
Listenable is subjective.
Nobody has to admit anything.
Scary Monsters & Sprites. I don't know if I've even heard that track, so certainly couldn't hum it.
People don't hate on Skrillex so much. It's largely blew out of proportion by people that think they have to defend him from a handful of people on a forum.
1. Some people didn't like him ever. Those people that don't like him anymore because he's mainstream? Their opinion isn't valid. By implying that everyone liked him at one point, you're no better than those you're having a go at.
2. You've been here since day 1 for dubstep? You said you started listening in 2009. There's a whole 7/8 (or maybe even more) years that you may have missed out on.
3. You say don't judge people, then use the terms "cigarette" and "gay" in a derogatory manner. Way to put your argument across in a mature manner. Lost any lingering respect I had for you there, because you're either a homophobe, or more likely I suspect, someone that had ran out of ways to justify your point.
4. It seems YOU could be insecure because of the massive diatribe you've written in defence of him. If you aren't insecure, accept that some people don't like somebody you do, and move on.
You also never see anyone hate against "traditional" dubstep? There's plenty around (youtube especially).
This doesn't happen on almost every thread whatsoever, a complete exaggeration, that is typical of people that slate DSF, but still come here every day.
Nobody has to go to any show they don't want to. I prefer to stand there with a good DJ spinning some tracks, get a skank on with a few beers, vibe, speak to some friends (And that includes girls too. Yes mate, they go to these nights too). A lot of people don't want lights or massive shows, or for things to be "epic".
In summary, your comment got you nowhere.
Mods, feel free to move this response to the Skrillex thread.
