Both. Better EQs, and you can use analyzers.AxeD wrote:Care to elaborate a little? Do you mean sound design like this is easier in other daws? Or that you could use a second piecejoshisrad wrote:Take off all your effects.
EQ out what is unnecessary. You have a shit ton of unnecessary high freqs and white noise for example. This will be much easier in a program outside of Reason.
of software next to Reason.

Thank you all so much! And yeah, I find EQing in reason a bit hard. Everything sounds very fuzzy. I also find it hard to determine which frequencies I want cut out and which I don't. I'll try your method Eat Bass!
Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
l@Knogret - Solid stuff man, I feel like it's lacking "clarity" in some sense, maybe bring down the distortion on the basslines. The synths and melodies are terrific, very nice and soulful. Good stuff!
@DubMikey - Cool track man, nice rhythm but the dissonance of your melodies never resolves in such a way as to let me really really dig it. I think its a solid foundation, maybe just look at easing off the dissonance a bit? Just my take though, do your thing! haha
@Sethream - There's definitely some good ideas here man, I think the basslines are lacking some definition/brightness. Maybe see what a quick high-end boost on the EQ would do? I think the drums need to smack a bit more. Are you notching the drum EQ in favour of the kick and snare?
Okay guys I'm at my wits end with the build-up here; been starring and replaying over and over again... Just looking for all kinds of input/suggestion. I'm feeling some kind of stepper pattern in there; I despise the one that's currently there lol. Anyway yeah, all thoughts welcome. And just a listening note, this track is a mess, please ignore the random white noise builds and shit. Just needed input desperately so I didn't really clean it up as I'm usually prone to do. Thanks in advance!

Sample More!!!
Practice it, get used to it and see if you like doing it after a while.
Get a field recorder like the zoom h4n, or if you're on a budget even just a shitty $10 one would work (which would still be a great experience)...
Sampling has always increased my creative workflow, it really gets you into a different vibe when producing.
The best thing about it - is it is your own, & everything is custom to what you've recorded.
You'll get fat sounds just by eq'ing it a bit, widening the stereo image on what needs it (mid-higher freq's) and giving everything enough room using good eq'ing.
A bit of distortion doesn't hurt either
Those are my tips, hopefully they help

yeah man, like i said just boost with a narrow q range and find the worst sounding freq and cut it out.Acro wrote:Thank you all so much! And yeah, I find EQing in reason a bit hard. also for frequency splitting i have a combinator originally created by futures untold if you would like it. shoot me a pm if your interested and ill either upload it or find the original thread from futures.
edit: btw naroja - are you talking about sampling things to create basses out of? if so mind sharing your method of doing so? i've always been curious about making basses out of sounds or even recording myself going like "yeowwwwww" and making it into a bass but I'm not really sure on how to do it.

@DubMikey- Not really my style, as I don't think the piano and sub and drums go together. Your actual production skills are good but I just don't like how the sounds mesh. The piano feels like sometimes you're just playing random notes in time with the song.
@Kongret- Yeah work on your mixing. And also, try to sound less like Skrillet mang, it's been done and done imo. I'd rather hear sounds you come up with as opposed to sounds I know you're trying to replicate. Keep it up though. Also, work on your sound design too. Mixing should come later, sound design is important and alot of yours are kinda muddy tbh.
@ChekOneTwo- First, comment and give feedback on other people's tunes. It's just polite. Secondly, keep at it, everything you've got their is a little flat and uninteresting. Work on sound design and drum patters and from there, learn about sampling, noise candy, mixing, etc.
Here is my latest beaut.

@bodom418 Not sure if it's my speakers but the track sounds like it's missing the top end. As a suggestion try to switch up the drum pattern a bit more, give them some variety and impact. Apart from that I'm not really sure what else to suggest because I'm not really a fan of this type of Dubstep. Aside from that it sounds like it's on it's way to becoming a decent track.
@Crow Not much to go on as the sample is a bit small. Not really feeling that talking, very difficult to understand what it's saying. Again, not my kind of Dubstep so not really sure what advice I can give.
@CheckOneTwo for your first track that's not half bad! When it drops, try to switch up the basses a little. This type of Dubstep makes use of LFO's and filters for different variations of the baseline. Do you have NI Kontakt? That bitch is great for resampling. I did put together a video on YT that shows you resampling. Hit me up if you want a link
Thought I'd try something a little different today. Experimenting with various stuff.

Ericgasparro - Liking the second section of the track after the breakdown, but seeing as there's not a massive kick I'd boost the level of the sub. Other than that there's no major stand out points that i notice. Nice work.
Dansheep13 - Definitely needs a more clearly defined structure, at the moment it feels like 2 tracks being mixed. Some good modulation on the bassline, but it sounds like it's overpowering the kick.
GV1 - Nice track, sounds like a solid mix. nice bounce to the track as a whole aswell.
Made a few more alterations to my track. Let me know what you think.

Noob Beginner (Need Feedback)
Hello DSF.
I finally made some progress in my first (i suppose you could call it attempt) dubstep track. I don't have very much experience in the production area and so i need your feed back. This isn't the whole song, just the drums. It's my third attempt at doing the drums and don't hesitate to suggest things that i should add/discard/keep the same.
Here's the link for the drum loop:

Thanks in advance.

@GV1 that is awesome. I love the vibes of that track.
@DJRaynes I like how deep the track is. I could listen to this a lot
@Crow Steppa Holy shit. i love being taken by surprise and thats exactly what your track did.
Ok so i tried doing some electro styled stuff. let me know what your think.

@GV1 - Very interesting stuff you are playing around wit here! Thing is, in my opinion, it quickly gets a bit boring. Add more elements to it and you should be good!
@DJRaynes - I'm not a fan of that kick drum, if you ask me, you should replace it. Around 2:19 I think you should add some more bass and an extra element, in my opinion. Other than that, it's some really cool stuff!
@Crow Steppa - Fatten up the basslines a bit, I think that would give it a great feel. I love the snare drum, just spot on! And at last; it feels like you're using a bit more reverb than actually needed. Keep what you're doing though!
@Gaol - Very nice for a first try! I bet you haven't mixed it yet?
Here's mine; a remix of Ajapai's Two Sworded. The intro is far from done btw! - Original: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvJwZZfQ3fs

Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
Cheers mate. I've had to give my ears a rest for a while because I started to get a bit carried away after posting this one up. But you're right, less is more. I've been playing with my EPS recently, which has 30 seconds sampling time and creating some nice music with it. Very limited (although not as limited as the SP). But listening to early massive attack stuff (EPS users) I started to learn about utilizing what you have. I think it's more about creating interesting patterns, especially with the drums, and experimenting with "less". I'm a big fan of Silkie and Emika, so I take a lot of inspiration from them in terms of simplicity.Pyrez wrote:I like where this is headed. Less is indeed more.GV1 wrote:Been fleshing out the track. I've grew away from the over complex sounding music, because great music to me don't have to be complex. I like to create stuff my nan might enjoy whilst still keeping that Dubstep vibe.
Thank you for the comment though. Really appreciate the good comments I get on my music.

Something that was in my head, that I finally got right in the DAW. Please, feedback is always welcomed, and don't be afraid to say anything negative, it's always a learning experience.
